Selling my car… Ideas, opinions, websites, suggestions, etc..?

I’m picking up my new 335i in a few weeks() , and have to sell my current car (350Z ). I was just planning on putting it on Autotrader, and maybe Cars.com (craigslist seems sketchy to me). And I’d post a carfax since the car is clean, but that’s all I have so far.

Other options I don’t know much about…
-“Carmax” … but none in NY (is it worth traveling out of state to do?)
-eBay… does it really, work, or is it as efficient as other sites?

Ultimately, I just want to get rid of the car at a good price (above the lousy BMW trade in), but I’ve never sold a car before so I really don’t know which route to take. If anyone has any experience or any ideas, I'd certainly appreciate it...thanks.

Make sure it's clean inside, clean inside the hood and exterior should be clean. Put it higher than what you really want and then lower the price of someone wants the price lower. If the car smells bad inside, open the windows hours before the buyer wants to see the car or just spray some lysol inside.

Heh... the car is mint except for the windows. (350Z's have weak window motors, but I'll knock it down a few hundred bucks.)

Just not sure about websites other than Autotrader (the only one I've used in the past). Would love to hear about ebay experiences though...

Also vehix.com seems to be picking up the popularity...and it is free to post on...

I sold my truck on Craigslist 2 years ago. 99 Ford Ranger 4x4. 4.0 V6. It had 102,000 miles. MOds were 32" BF goodrich, K&N, TOnneau cover, and a Borla exhaust. The truck was in really good condition. I asked 5,000 which was under Kelley BB, and ended up selling for $4,500. Yea the key is to start higher so there is room for negotiation.

ANYWAYS. CL was a great way to get it done. I dont think its sketchy. Its free advertising. I posted the details with pics, and the truck was sold in three weeks. Pretty much hassle free. I would do it again.

wow, good to hear. I just remember when I was looking for cars how much of a pain it is to search on craigslist. I guess I just associate it with cheaper items, where I'd sell something < $10,000, but since I'm selling my car for $18k, it seems like too much for that kinda site. (Ahh, I'm gonna set up autotrader this weekend, may look around craigslist and throw up a post if it looks better.) Thanks for the input.

I recently went through this with my old car. I got a little interest from Autotrader, a little interest from craigslist, no interest from about 10 other places (cars.com, etc)

The most interest I got was a dozen calls a day from parking my car at a semi busy intersection.

What I did for Craigslist was type up an ad and then copy it 4 times in notepad. Change a few words on each ad - that way I could post it several times a day.

Hahah, so you're the guy who's selling a BMW and adds related terms such as... "acura, audi, bently, bmw, cadillac, chevy, etc..." Haha, jk.

Thats a good idea though. I'd just type in Nissan, and I'd get listings for every make, model, truck, hotwheels, stolen rims, everything!

I have to say that Craigslist.com REALLY worked for me. I have sold a couple of cars now through it. I live in upstate NY, and I had a gentleman from W. Virginia drive all the way to my home to purchase my 525iT. I think I had it listed for about 4 hours before I started getting hits on it... and within 2 days, she was gone. And the best part... it is totally free. Definitely worth I try, as long as you are asking a realistic price. Good luck!

Nice, so he just drove up and bough it? So he brought a bank-check or something and it was that easy for $16k?

He, along with two buddies of his, drove up in an M3. Paid me with a bank check... we had a few converstations the day before he drove up, so he came with plates and proof of insurance... so at about midnight, he drove away with it. I haven't heard anything yet, and that was a year ago. I sure hope he is treating it well.

Haha naw - didn't add bunk words. just changed the way I worded the car "Mitsu Lancer Ralliart" Mitsubishi Lancer Ralli-art" etc.

Another good way to sell the car is post it up on the 350z forums - I bought my 335i from a BMW forum.

Yeah, used to be a member on a 350Z forum...I think I'll just be lazy and post something brief and a link to the car on autotrader.
