"BMW has a vision, they have the technology. What are we waiting for?"

There is still some resistance to autonomous driving. A lot of it.

It's perfect for all the Millennials that prefer to screw around instead of actually driving.

I'll feel much safer knowing their car is driving for their safety and for mine.

Because you have the option to turn it on and off. I'm sure you can thinks of times you'd like to flip a switch and just have the car drive for you.

It could be both; drive when you won't and let it drive when you don't.

I am all for autonomous driving and everything but this kind of video just hype up the crowd too much when i think we are quite some years away from ever be able to sit on passenger seat or even let the car pick us up. (to be actually usefull)

I think now and in years ahead we need to be satisfied with systems that sometimes in some situations aid and help us. But we are far away from complete autonomous driving.

There are just so many outside human errors and problems that we ignore and solve on daily basis.

Like what if the road is not marked like it should be with signs?

What is there is road works and you get some low paid worker incharge of doing a marking a detour?

What is the performance of a system if there is bad weather?

What if there is snow and sensors get covered?

Bad and inaccurate GPS maps? Like i know regions in USA must be well covered but here they are not regularly updated.

What happens where there is bad traffic and you get the go ahead from approaching driver to go ahead? Does the system pick it up and go or wait for ''sufficient'' space?

I dont think its for millennial at all. Its more for the Gen Z as they are just starting to enter the workforce and were the age group brought up by millennial who glued their eyes to a tablet. We're seeing those exiting college not wanting to drive, own mcmansions, prefer to live in the city, and remain glued to their smart phone screens 24/7.

Either way it's a fucking epidemic that's for damn sure.

If you add up how much it would cost in Uber to get everywhere you need to go.. it would probably equal the cost of a $100k car if not more.

Autonomous/semi-autonomous driving is amazing in traffic jams for long distances. But you'd think BMW owners are buying the cars to drive them, not be driven in them.

The more exciting piece will be when the technology is so sophisticated that it can be utilized to train drivers to race on a race track, using the HUD to show the proper driving line, acceleration and braking necessary.

There are about 40,000 people per year killed in car wrecks in this country alone, many more injured. Eventually autonomous cars will reduce that to near zero. We are quite a few years away from that, but it will happen. Many other benefits too. Someone asked is this for the millenials? Well, it actually might help you too. If this technology gets adopted fast enough, when you become too old to drive you will not have to worry because an autonomous car will take you wherever you want to go.

I'll say this. I'm as pretty hardcore an enthusiast as there is. I'm sure someone is crazier of course, but my point being, there IS a place for this tech. It's coming and will someday be the norm. Most people aren't like "us".
Someday the price will be affordable for everyone and I for one would like to use it at time to be productive while traveling to work or on a road trip or sleeping or whatever else you want to do with with my time. It's a personal chauffeur when you want it.

....Then I also want to shift my own gears and enjoy the sounds of ICE cars at their finest so there is that dilemma.

Semi-autonomous driving is what lured me from BMW to Tesla. It makes long commutes and stop-n-go traffic a joy, yet I can take the wheel when I'm ready for the track or open-road. I'm happy to finally see BMW add these options.

That's probably the easy part (computer figure out best racing line without other driver).

I can definitely see when autonomous driving is useful, for example traffic jam, 8 hours drive, or you can just walk out and have car park itself then hail it back, or even have itself drive to the dealer for service, so you're not wasting times then stuck with loaner

If you live in a busy area like greater Los Angeles, you'll want this in the commute. I need to stay productive to earn more money for M8 )

I'm not a fan at all, but to each their own. Seems like a disaster in the making to me, sounds great till someone figures out how to hack into the cars systems.

737 max took pilots out of the equation; how well did that automation work?

End result is further restrictions, penalties and liabilities for those who choose to drive.
Can’t wait for the fully automated big rigs rolling down the highway..

This tech is a very long time off..
the testing and real world en-mass issues and hurdles are massive.

A few reports of deaths and injuries due to software bugs where the driver couldn't intervene, either because the weren't ready or simply couldn't because of a bug.. would set it all back years.
It works now because the test base is controlled and minute..
And how do you roll it out while some cars aren't autonomous.. country roads withouts signals, poor autonomously driven car gets wiped out by old classic having fun..
