COMMENTS

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 4, 2019… BMW brand sales increased 7.2 percent in August 2019 for a total of 25,505 over the 23,789 vehicles sold in August 2018. Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles – X1 through X7 models – increased just over 21% in August 2019 vs August 2018 and now account for 56% of BMW brand sales in the U.S.

“We are happy to say that demand for BMW product in the U.S. remains strong,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. “In addition to our Sports Activity Vehicles, customers are enthusiastic about our increased offerings in the luxury segment – including the newly-updated 7 Series and all-new 8 Series. We will further expand our 8 Series lineup to include the BMW M8 Coupe, M8 Convertible and M850i Gran Coupe, which were just unveiled at Monterrey Car Week in Pebble Beach and will arrive in showrooms in the coming months.”

BMW’s flagship sedan, the BMW 7 Series (+27.6%), was recently given a sharper, bolder look, increased technology and connectivity features, including BMW’s voice activated Intelligent Personal Assistant, and suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

BMW Group Electrified Vehicle Sales

Sales of BMW Group electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles decreased 37.6 percent in August 2019 vs. August 2018. Model changeover has limited the current BMW Group electrified lineup to six models including the new BMW 745e and the BMW i3, BMW i8 Coupe, BMW i8 Roadster, BMW 530e, and MINI Countryman plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Several new plug-in hybrid BMW models will arrive in 2020. The fully electric MINI Cooper SE will also arrive in 2020.

I'd attribute it more to BMW's strongest product offensive in years. Their vehicles are back to being best in segment after falling behind competitors with many of the the F-chassis models.

Looks like the biggest increase, both numerically and by percent, for August was for the X5. I'm glad I was able to help BMW make that gain

- I want to thank BMW for renaming the 5 Series GT to the 6 Series GT, and for renaming the 6 Series coupe/convertible/GC to the 8 Series. These two changes have left 6 Series GT sales very exposed for the last few months (where they'd otherwise be hidden in a sea of 5 Series sedan sales or a somewhat smaller sea of 6 Series coupe/convertible sales), and we can see this month has been no better for the much-maligned vehicle. It is easy to see why it has been marked for removal from the US market.

- Although I am not 100% confident in this, I believe that this is the first month ever where BMW's light truck sales have eclipsed its passenger car sales. In recent months, X vehicle sales (which include the X1 and X2) have eclipsed car sales. But this month light trucks alone have actually outsold all other BMW models combined.

- Mini sales rebounded a little on the back of the Countryman, but the car-heavy lineup is still facing huge challenges in today's market.

While I agree that they've regained some of what was lost last generation, I think it is the market shift to SUVs that has put BMW in a really good spot in the US right now. The F generation X lineup was pretty darn competitive, and, had the SUV shift come on stronger, sooner, sales might not have dipped as much as they did during those years. That said, the G generation X lineup is certainly a cut above, and I can appreciate that even as someone with barely a passing interest in a luxury SUV (and scarcely more than that in any SUV at all).

Chief, it's mainly because of the model year end sales that they have. These are the best times to buy or lease a new vehicle. Nothing more nothing less.

No, that's not it at all.

Sales in August 2019 are up compared to sales in August 2018. That increase has nothing to do with the time of the year since it is the same time of year in both cases. In fact, the reason why sales figures are typically compared to previous years for the same period (rather than, say, a previous month for example) is exactly those types of factors.

interesting that they dont put the x1 and x2 in the X (suv section). If they did the suv sales total would look a little different....

It won't be long that BMW (and all others) will develop crossover chassis first, then derive sedans from crossovers.
Xs sale are just insane compare the 2~8 series.

That is already the case - all BMWs (except for the i3 and i8) are built on one of two architectures: CLAR for RWD/AWD vehicles and FAAR (formerly UKL) for FWD/AWD vehicles. These are highly modular vehicle matrixes with the ability to accommodate all types of vehicles. Other manufactures have similar systems in place.

That's because the 2019 X1 and X2 have been on an airbag related "stop sale" most of the year. Go back through the monthly sales logs and you can see they went from selling 3k+ X1/X2's per month to basically zero, until last month when the repair became available (and BMW started shipping 2019's to dealers again).

Look at how many new models were introduced... X7, Z4, 8.

They are increasing sales by creating new models. It's fake.

The Z4 and 8 Series accounted for less than 600 units so those were not the reason for the increase. Furthermore, the 8 Series replaced the 6 Series, so, no, that is not, in fact, a new model; it’s simply a new name. And the Z4 is also not new; it went on hiatus after the prior generation ended, so sales were lost at that time.

Nonsense. If increasing sales were as simple as creating new models with reckless abandon, then they’d have hundreds if not thousands of models. The very essence of running a successful enterprise is carefully investing into products that will resonate with buyers at the time they hit the market. Oh, but the X7 is a no-brainer, you say? Sure, and so is the rest of the SAV lineup that has been added over the past decade-plus, so we should deduct all of those sales too because hey, those were obviously going to sell.

They are very different cars, even if they're both GT coupes.
