BMW 3 of the Top 10 cars most likely to be resold less than 12 months of ownership
http://www.businessinsider.com/10-ca...nership-2019-9
On average, 3.4% of new vehicles are resold within the first year of ownership. #7 BMW X3 9% of the X3 were resold within 12 months. #6 BMW X1 10.4% of the X1 were resold within 12 months. #2 BMW 3 Series 11.8% of the 3 series were resold within 12 months. The firm excluded vehicles with less than 1,000 miles on the odometer from the study. This was done to keep the study from being skewed by "car punching", which is when automakers offer incentives to dealers to buy new cars to use as loaners and then resell them when they're still under a year old. Eight out of ten on the list are German and British luxury cars. The other two are Nissans. The list tops off with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class: 12.4% are resold used within the first year. This is 3.7 times more than the average for all vehicles. |

I have driven the C-Class, both BMW SUVs and the Versa. I wouldn't spend my own money on any of them. So, I wonder if buyer's remorse has anything to do with BMWs being on this list.

10% of them would not be resold in the first 12 months if that didn't play a big part.

My X1 that I traded got sold as soon as I signed the papers for my 430i It didn't spend a single day on the lot. I think the statistic didn't mention that many of those X1 owners may have moved up to X3, X3 moved to X5, 3 series to 5 series. etc, etc. It also didn't say that BMW owners are nuts or have enough money and/or credit to be able to do that. |

One thing that is influencing these number is the large number of service loaners BMW dealers have. My dealer turns his over every six months or so.

It's hard to compare the F82 to the X1, as my F82 literally cost two X1s. |

The X1 are leaps and bounds above Hondas, Subarus, Jeeps, Toyotas and it didn't cost that much different than similar class SUV or SAV as BMW calls it.
It did have less options for the same price. Stuff like leather, LED lights, autonomous stop, adaptive cruise, CarPlay are extra cost options or not even available in the X1 But like I said it's an appetizer BMW or a gateway BMW, making you want more and stronger BMWs |

This has little to do with the product and everything to do with the fact that these are entry level luxury cars that people can't afford the payments on.
Sure these are lackluster driver's cars compared to BMW's of yore, but people picking up these cheap leases don't know that or care.

It's still viewed as the entry level BMW to most people since it's a high volume sedan with aggressive leases.
The G20 not so much since there's no 320 yet, but the base F30s were everywhere.

In basic config, probably. 2's go for the 40's, 3's in the 30's. only way to know is to see which cars are being returned. (and we are sure these are proper sales and not leases which get 'sold' to the leasing company?)
As for the comments on the X1, it's basically best of the breed if you're shopping in that market space. While the study ruled out the loaner tricks that dealers/mfr's do for sales, does it talk about repo's? Or upgrades? I imagine a repo wouldn't be a trade in, but an upgrade might. In other words, yes they traded but did they stick with the brand? I can imagine that since those cars come with so few features on their 'starting price' models that people get disgusted when a base kia has more 'stuff' in it and move to either another brand, or just better equipped model of the car they like. (i.e. BMW's 'premium' package which should be standard equipment). Either way, would love to know more. Personally I'm happy with people trading in nice cars at 12 months, because it means I can grab one that's basically new, with warranty, for a nice discount. Seth |

I suspect loaners are the majority of these sales.

The article alluded to many loaners counting in the numbers. And you are exactly right - many loaners have thousands of miles on them, not "less than a thousand".
