BMW Recalling More Than 25k 2018 to 2020 Model Year Vehicles for Backup Camera Issue
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com "BMW is issuing a wide recall on recent models because the display settings can be changed so that the rear camera view is turned off when the car is in Reverse. Additionally, the system will retain those settings the next time the vehicle is driven. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the issue could increase the risk of a crash and also does not adhere to federal safety standards. (See our guide to backup cameras.) The recall affects many 2018-2020 BMW vehicles, as well as some Rolls-Royce models and the Toyota Supra, which was co-developed with BMW. (Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW.) The recall is expected to begin November 19, 2019. The Details: Vehicles recalled:
The problem: The backup camera display settings may be changed so that it does not show behind the vehicle when the transmission is placed in Reverse. The fix: Dealerships will update the backup camera software, free of charge. How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls-Royce at 1-877-877-3735. Toyota Supra owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. NHTSA campaign number: 19V684000 Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has recalls that need to be addressed. If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly." |

Here is the thing that happened to me several times on mine 19'X5
Which I don't try to do anymore but caught me off guard. I have very long curved driveway that I always reverse out from the garage, and if the favorite radio station show to accept it with gesture control and I accept it it switches from camera to radio station while driving reverse

Checked my vin and I'm tagged for it, I haven't really modified the camera settings so I don't care too much. Just hope this update doesn't impact anything else. |

This is what I get for my 2019 X5 VIN. It's only about „too" extreme brightness & contrast settings. Who cares? I could also put tape on the camera and see nothing. We all used to drive in reverse without backup cameras and that was perfectly fine...
Sep 27,2019 Manufacturer Recall NumberNA NHTSA Recall Number19V684 Recall StatusRecall Incomplete Summary REARVIEW CAMERA DISPLAY: The rearview camera display may not fully conform to a Federal requirement. If the brightness is set at/near its lowest setting, and the contrast is set at/near its highest setting then, at the "next backing event", the display may not meet a Federal requirement. Safety Risk At the "next backing event", if a vehicle operator relied on the displayed image, with brightness set at/near its lowest setting, and contrast set at/near its highest setting, then in certain lighting conditions, this could affect the visibility of certain object behind the vehicle.. However, vehicles are equipped with a Park Distance Control (PDC) system which alerts vehicle operators, both audibly and visually, to objects behind a vehicle. Remedy The rearview camera software will be updated to reduce the brightness and contrast adjustment range. |

Backup Camera
Dealers were told about this recall last month, so if you bought one then chances are it was already fixed. There was a different recall just a week before I was told. Unending news, surprised this made the top news actually since it happens so frequently it's "just another day."

it's such a minor thing I hated to go to dealer just for this, maybe find some time towards end of year and hopefully get a free North America map update while at it, at least...
edit and I don't see why would one do this "If the brightness is set at/near its lowest setting, and the contrast is set at/near its highest setting then" |

This was a terrible stop delivery for Canadian dealers as this was released and dealers were notified over the weekend at month-end so nothing could be booked and marked for reporting especially for something relatively minor. Fortunately it's just a I Level update and nothing more in terms of hardware.

The items may be working as originally designed. However it is NHTSA that has a concern that does not meet UNITED STATES federal law.
(The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the issue could increase the risk of a crash and also does not adhere to federal safety standards. (See our guide to backup cameras.) This is No different than if they shipped cars with anti dazzle that could be turned on full time by any user ... there would be a recall. There are many German designs that have not met US approval , even though they may even exceed our guidelines. |

Has anybody had this updated yet? I am curious if it updates the entire head unit to the latest firmware.

Never rely on technology, the best camera it's you eyes! One of my colleagues exploded his rear windshield because he was focusing on the camera and did not notice that the pick-up parked behind him has a ladder hanging out!

I'm booked for November 5th to fox mine. Haven't noticed any problems yet though.
Only problem I have is programming my garage door to the HomeLink buttons on the mirror

X3M here.
I never use the backup camera anyway. I always turn around when I back up. Still a pain taking the car to the dealer... Last edited by jpdchicago; 10-10-2019 at 01:40 PM.. |
