Took my vehicle in to have hood repainted at Auto Nation Bodyshop Spring, Tx through BMW Woodlands. They kept the car for 5 days.

Picked up vehicle Friday. My car came back looking like this. Moreover, hood repainting was done poorly - has light spots and swirl marks.

Also now- The entire car looks like it's been scrubbed with a Brillo pad ( car was/is ceramic coated).

1. Could this damage be in the ceramic coating or is it in the paint?

2. Is this repairable?

3. Any idea what that other marking on the side skirt is from?

4. Suggestions/advice?

I'm driving there first thing in the morning to show them and speak with them.

Did you show them that when you picked it up? That should not be a show stopper, but it would have helped.

Beyond that it's a simple matter of demanding that it all be fixed.

Didn't get a good look when I picked it up Friday. Was late and dark. However the vehicle was inspected when I dropped it off. I don't think I'll have a problem convincing them that this damage was caused by their facility. They are familiar with my vehicle and how anal I am about taking care of it. My concern is repairing the damage and frankly whether I even want the same shop to repair it or attempt to convince them to pay for me to bring it elsewhere for correction.

Get them to pay for you to bring it to a detailer. Cut and polish will have that back to normal. The big problem will be that they will need to cut through your ceramic coating and reapply after the correction. Keep that in mind when trying to get reimbursement.

The paint was the same When I picked my brand new m340i back in September from dealership, feels like all scratched, then I asked a friend who work in a detail shop to polish the car and ceramic coated it. Now the paint looks perfect! For you I think your dealership rather fix it or pay for the polish costs!

Yeah, my car's paint looked terrible from the dealer, full of spider web already. It is going to be a long winter and can't wait to get a proper polish.

Thanks again. I suspected that it may be car wash related. BMW should be hand detailing these vehicles! I just hope it can be repaired.

I don't know. To me, the damage in those photos looks worse than the usual superficial swirl marks you get from an automatic car wash. An automatic car wash can leave superficial, circular swirl marks that are evenly distributed over most of the car.

It does appear worse and damage is not limited to just swirl marks. There's a huge area of the side skirt where the paint is now matted (first pic)

It's car wash. Happened to my Tanzanite blue at side skirts too. Apparently those side skirts take a beating in a car wash.

For what it's worth, I always have my dealer stick a large "DO NOT WASH" sign in my window whenever I bring it in for service as my F30 is ceramic coated. I do not trust any car wash that's not touchless...

That said, I can't believe they'd return your car looking like that. I'd be raising hell if it were my vehicle. Clearly was caused by somebody at the paint shop and should be willing to fix it.

I believe as somebody said before the fact that it's ceramic coated may cause a lot of problems, especially if they claim nobody notified them of this etc. Just my 2 cents

Thanks. I agree completely. Whenever I bring the vehicle for service I always instruct not to wash, however this time The vehicle was going for body work and the service advisor told me they would "detail" the car so I agreed.

He was aware the car is ceramic coated. I also cannot believe they would actually let a vehicle leave the Bodyshop looking like this...

And do I really want the same folks that caused this damage trying to fix it???

This is one of the downfalls of ceramic coating. Even-though you told your dealer that the car was ceramic coated, it doesn't look like the message got to the body shop.

If you buff a ceramic coated car without removing the ceramic coating properly 1st, paint would look just like yours.

You need to get the entire ceramic coat removed, get a full paint correction and have another coat of ceramic coat applied if you wish to go that route.

In my experience, body shops tend to do more damage than a dealer carwash as your entire car is exposed to overspray and paint particles while waiting its turn at the shop. To fix this, every car that comes out of a body shop gets a one stop buff and wax which usually causes more harm than good.

I would talk to a good detailer get the car repaired and have the dealership pay the bill....... do not take it back to the same place.

So apparently according to the detailed the Bodyshop uses the scratches are caused by BMW car wash and are on the ceramic coating. According to them they can be "washed" away. Doesn't make sense to me but waiting to see the result.

Scratches washing away?
Take it to the people who did it for you and ask them. The “detailer” the body shop uses will probably use a few coats of wax over it to hide it and they will reappear after a car wash or two.

They are going to put a glaze on his car, it is going to look amazing for 30 secs and will be back to square one.

OP, get your car out of there ASAP and take it to the detail shop that applied the coating before things get worse.

So the written description is their account of what was some. Also attached photos.


"We had your vehicle taken over to Xpel to have them inspect the swirl marks that were left on your vehicle after delivery. We addressed the overspray that was on the bumper, doors and rocker panel and had our wash department apply a booster for vehicles that have ceramic coating and had him hand wash and polish your vehicle to remove the swirls that were caused by the first wash after the vehicle was repaired. After inspecting the vehicle we could no longer see the swirls in the doors, the wash department did not apply any fillers or did any buffing the areas there was soap and polish involved and applied by hand.
