We should be closing on our new house within about the next month, and it's time to retire some of my old classics and change the primary to bedroom and garage use. I've given away a few TVs over the years. With the change in size from our current apartment to house, the space is effectively doubling in size, so I think it's time.

To give you an idea, we still have this Panasonic Viera 42" 720p Plasma TH-42PX6U I bought like fifteen years ago in our bedroom. It weighs about 70 lbs I'd guess (no exaggeration). I think it has done its service and time to retire. Will probably hand off to Goodwill. Or donate to the Smithsonian.



In our current living room we have an LG 60" 4K LCD 60UF7300-UT I got probably five years ago. Nothing wrong with it, but we're going to wall mount it in the new master bedroom and move up to a nicer, newer, and larger TV to wall mount in the living room.

New house has about 10' ceilings throughout with a double tray in the living room for a total of about 12' or 13' ceilings with can lights I'll be changing over to dimming. Open floor plan with about a 20'x40' space shared between the living room and kitchen, but with four windows and glass french doors to the back patio. I wouldn't mind getting something to block light, but blinds will probably do. We won't have a dedicated theater with optimal lighting or anything like that, so the living space will be the casual TV, baseball while cooking, and movie night all in one - mixed use. I estimate the couch being positioned about 12' from the TV, and with my burning through www.rtings.com , I've arrived at needing a 90" TV



Given the large space, tall walls, and open area, I was thinking a 70" would work, but realistically the TV sizes typically jump from 65" to at least a 75". So 75" it is? Maybe a projector would be a good use of space? Also looking into a decent "home theater" setup for the living room (really just a good soundbar and subwoofer really).

I think the final addition will be a lower-end to middle of the road ≤ 42" Smart TV to mount in the standard 20'x21' two car garage.

Curious what everyone else's setups are. I did a bit of a half assed search for TVs on the forum and really only came up with gaming setups. What are your room conditions/use/dimensions? What type of TV (or projector)? I know I've seen some posts on here from video and audiophiles. Let's see what you've got!

So I have no tv in the living room or bedroom. We have a nice family room (home theatre) in the basement that is really only used to watch TV. I bought a Sony Bravia 60" LED about 7 years ago and I'm pretty happy with it and we use a Bose surround 5.1 system. When it packs it in I'll move up to something around 80" and OLED unless something better comes along in the mean time. We spend most of our time in our living room where the stereo and fireplace are. The music is always on, currently a Synthesis Tube Amp and Zu Omen Def speakers, most of our music is streamed right but sometime we put the vinyl on and light some candles and pour some good whisk(e)y.

My Panasonic Plasma died two years ago and I replaced it with a Samsung OLED. It’s amazing how hot the plasma got and the OLED is cool and a beautiful picture. The smart tv is a nice package as you can switch between cable and Netflix with one remote. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out how to control the tuner with the tv remote.

I have the legendary Pioneer Kuro. A 141FD to be exact. The only TV I would view as an upgrade to the Kuro is an OLED TV.

OLED is the best right now from LG or Sony. Samsung makes QLED but OLED is still superior.

LG C series OLED are solid. We have a C8 65" and it’s a great tv. Costco has good prices.

Costco has a 82" Sammy right now for $1999 Great value and 5 year warranty. I wouldn't go smaller as size matters apparently.

If your budget allows, the TV sweet spot at the moment would be an LG C9 77" OLED. Once you go above that, the prices jump way too much. That would be my choice of TV if I wasn't going the projector route.

And if you want a quality soundbar, the Samsung Q90R Soundbar is easily the best all round package.

I have a 65" C9 OLED. It's breathtaking. With 4K HDR content, it feels like you could step right into the picture.

I've been itching to get an LG OLED 65" to replace our old 65" Mitsu DLP, but I like to keep TV's for 5+ years, and I'm worried about the ghosting. I keep hoping they'll come out with an new one that doesn't have that issue. Until then I'm pretty lost on what to get myself.

I'm sort of in the same boat and looking to upgrade my tv set up. I've researched the LG OLEDs and the dreaded burn in issue kind of scares me with the B9 and C9, although I suppose if you got the additional five year warranty from Best Buy that should put you at ease? It's my understanding that this issue is becoming less of a problem on the 2019 models but it's still a panel lottery. Reddit has a sub forum dedicated to the issue if you want to learn more.
Samsung's QLED 90 flagship model is best for bright rooms and wide viewing angles. The negative to this tv is Samsung dropped Dolby Vision from their tv sets and most movies use this format. They took a chance using HDR10 instead and very little content uses it. Also if you really want to calibrate your tv Samsung made it more difficult with less options to do so.
Sony has their A9G OLED which unfortunately has blooming issues on dark scenes. I guess their android smart system is also a pain to navigate. If you can get past all of that it's a great tv with a hefty price.
I'm hoping the 2020 tv's will fix the above issues, the 2019 high end models really dropped the ball in my opinion.

Wasn’t aware they had issues. Mine is a 2018 model C8 and I haven’t experienced anything off. I’ll have to look into it...

At this point you have to get an OLED. They've come down in price enough and 65" or bigger is what i'd aim for. I'd probably go 75 if you can afford it. Don't be fooled by that QLED marketing gimmick by Samsung. Sony or LG should be great quality wise.

Prices have definitely come down. 65” are $1,000 less than when I got mine and the 75” is half of what it used to be. It was almost $10k back when I got my 65”.

So this is my setup and environment. Living room is 17’ x 11’ roughly - it’s open to the kitchen area so there’s more space than 11’ in reality but using the placement of the couch and chairs as a reference point for the boundary of what I consider the living room to be. Vaulted ceilings that go from 8’ at the window up to nearly 15’ or more in the middle of the room.

TV is about 12’ from the couch wall mounted on stationary mount (doesn’t swing out). 65” LG C8 OLED. It’s hooked up to an Onkyo TX-NR585 receiver via single HDMI cable. Receiver controls all the inputs into the TV. Currently have an Apple TV 4K, NVIDIA Shield, LG HD Blu-ray player, Comcast X1 set top box, Nakamichi Cassette Deck and Audio-Technica turntable connected to the receiver.

Speaker set up is a Dolby Atmos 3.2.1 configuration so it’s 2 front channel book shelf speakers on stands, a center channel speaker, 2 front upward firing Atmos effects speakers and a sub. All are Elac Debut 2.0 speakers. Haven’t gotten around to getting some small rear surround speakers since it would require pulling wires under the crawl space and up the walls to keep things clean looking.

Certainly not audiophile level but it’s a pretty decent budget setup.

I believe the issue happens when people leave one channel on for too long, so if you watch CNN for ten plus hours a day the risk is the logo could "burn in" over time. The same goes for gaming, if you play one game many hours a day the logo could burn in. Like I said it seems to be a lottery panel issue, most people have zero problems. LG does not include burn in on their warranties but Best Buy will with five years of coverage.

Yeah, I read up on it and I guess it isn’t really something I’d be at risk for. Both the NVIDIA Shield and Apple TV go to a screen saver when idle, we don’t watch a lot of content with fixed on air graphics like CNN, and the kids aren’t gaming for more than an hour or two before I tell them to get their butt outside...

i have a 55" in my living room mounted on the wall with couches ~12-15ft away and top of TV is ~8.25' high and its plenty big.

Its the biggest i can get in the spot, but its definitely not too small. I am a fan of not having the TV being the focal point of the room though, and would prefer a dedicated theater type room for a big tv.



For TVs, i always buy vizios cause they are cheap.
