BMW Beats Mercedes in U.S. Sales for First Time Since 2015

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Overall BMW seems to have beat Mercedes for the 2019 sales year for their passenger vehicles and SUV's (I would assume they aren't counting Sprinter Vans) by the small margin of about ~8,700 vehicles. The article speculates new competition for the GLS, the X7 can be seen as a sales boost for the BMW brand.

Competition should be close again in 2020 as BMW is set to release the 2er Gran Coupe and should finally gain/take sales from a segment they're the last to participate in.

Interesting to me in the result:

- small SUV segment: BMW is catching up quickly with the X3 to the leader M-B with the GLC
- medium SUV segment: X5 has taken the lead in 2019, from the GLE which led in 2018
- large SUV segment: X7 in its year of introduction has nearly tied unit sales of the GLS, a well-established model, impressive

All three BMW X-models are new platforms, which should support continued strong sales. Benz has one all new (shared) platform with the GLE and GLS on the V167/X167 platform, and the GLC is a facelift for 2020.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the X3 surpass the GLC in sales. When M-B introduces the GLB and future all new GLC, small SUVs will be an even more competitive segment.

And to think some believe BMW should never have diluted the brand with SUV/SAV models.

This is why I felt that CNBC video was premature and misleading.

Merc launched a whole slew of new products between 2014-2018. BMW launched it's volume G-chassis models in 2017 with the 5er and X3. Since then a new X5, X7, 3-series, and forthcoming 2GC have been launched.

X3s have grown in size so it’s almost like Medium, Large and XL now. Small would be the X1/X2s.

Things change in a year, that's dishonest on their part.

But given the production costs they still went ahead and did it, and published a couple articles on their website on the topic.

And don't forget the 7er G11/G12 launched in 2016. It was the first ever production G (CLAR) platform vehicle with innovative Carbon Core structural components.

Those CNBC skits are clearly put together by college interns making 5 bucks an hour.

Got to remember, a lot of the points made about BMW trailing Mercedes in the CNBC video was also regarding worldwide/global sales. While they have the crown back in the U.S., globally, they are still behind Mercedes who has been increasing the gap for quite some time now.

BMW X models are dominating competition. Each is virtually the class leader and here in the UK, deals have very strong support.

A winning formula so far but completion all round is great for the consumer.

BMW has grown in markets where they needed to (China, where Audi's have had, and still do, a good chunk of market share) but RoW, BMW just doesn't have that recognition that Mercedes does. I don't think that ever changes so in markets where BMW matters, taking the U.S. sales crown is huge.

Or perhaps the analyst and/or producer at CNBC had an agenda...

Even if they do find something, that's gonna be peanuts comparing to the total number of the cars sold.

Why? We should be caring about the quality, features and price of cars and not just about BMW. If MB makes a better car for me, I will buy it. If we blindly keep buying BMWs, there is no incentive for the company to improve its products.

I bought my 530e because it was the best car FOR ME at the time.

I just like to change the cars because I love to drive something new.
This has nothing to do with quality
