Confused...need some math help (Lambo MSRP - Trade)

okay so at the lambo dealership I was checking out a Nera gallardo with my dad and after negotiation we got to:

$119,000 + $90,000 = $209,000

we offered $115,000 + $90,000 = $205,000

they called back and said they could do:

$118,500 + $92,000 = $210,500

Now I'm lost because if they're taking $500 off their price + giving us $2000 extra for our trade, why does the MSRP become $1,500 higher? Which is the best deal?

I feel like I'm overlooking something out of pure excitement and thought I'd double check.

Thanks for reading

You're doing the math wrong. If they are giving you more money for the trade-in you should take that off of the selling price. Thus your total should be as followed:

$118,500 - $2000 extra that you got for the trade in= $116,500 + $90,000 that you originally got. So you should end up with $206,500.

That's what I thought initially but then I took out the pen and paper and did the math (wrong, it seems..lol). Either I'm doing the math wrong or the dealer is trying to mix numbers to get what they want. I'll see whats up tomorrow and let you guys know.

I'm trying not to get too psyched in case the deal falls apart. If the deal DOES go through, I get to use the car ALL WEEK!!! And my dad might take it out on occasion

Yeah the numbers you posted didn't make any sense. They either (a) supposedly bumped the trade-in to $92k just to please you on paper (which doesn't make any sense since you will end up paying more than you were going to in the first place) or (b) you misunderstood what they said and forgot to take the $2k off the price to balance off the higher trade-in value.

I dont mean to be blunt, but you are going to look like a total asshole driving around in a lambo for a week. I am envious you have the opportunity too, but you need to realize what this entire thread looks like from someone elses perspective.

Envy (also called invidiousness) may be defined as an emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another’s superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it."[1]

It can also derive from a sense of low self-esteem that results from an upward social comparison threatening a person's self image: another person has something that the envier considers to be important to have. If the other person is perceived to be similar to the envier, the aroused envy will be particularly intense, because it signals to the envier that it just as well could have been him or her who had the desired object

Seems ridiculous how little they are discounting the car, I mean a few thousands dollars doesn't even make a dent on such a high price... The dealer is tricking to nickle and dime you on a $200k transaction.

But, either way congratulations on an awesome car!!!

I dont understand why I would seem like an "asshole". I also dont know what you mean by "a week". My dad's getting the car, but he's giving me both keys (mainly so the women in the house wont touch it). I can drive it wherever I want but I'm obviously not gonna take it to school.

yes and no. Yes (~$40k off), No because the car is technically "old" w/ the LP560 out. And judging by how Lambo's LOVE to depreciate, it might be worth it for your dad to focus on an LP560 instead of the Nera.

As for your math, not really sure why you're showing it as X + X = sell price

Focus on Sale Price-Trade= Net $$ on top of trade so it alleviates the confusion.
