2007 GTI or 2006 330i?
Hey everyone, I just need some opinions on what to get for my next car. E90 330i or MKV GTI 2 door. I've been deciding between these two for about 3 weeks now, and I still haven't come to a conclusion. Basically, I'm 17, so I'm looking for that little extra edge when I'm driving, and I've driven a chipped GTI, damn thing flies. It'll kill a 330i. Interior I don't care too much about. Reliability is one thing I definitely care about, and I know BMW excels in that as opposed to VW. Looks, I honestly like them both. Obviously, the 330i handles better, RWD, but I don't go to tracks and race in circuits or whatever. I know this is a BMW forum, but if you guys could just give your honest opinions on what's best for ME that would be great. Oh and I can't afford a 335i.
(BTW 750Li is my mom's, paying for half my car with my own money.) Thanks. EDIT: If you vote for one or another, please list the reason why you chose it.

As a person who has owned GTIs for 3 years now I can tell you that it's the very quick car, even in stock 2ltr form. I got an apple 3G phone about a week ago and added the software for timing acceleration and split times and the wife little Golf surprised the hell out of me. Here's the figures
10mph @ 0.95s 20mph @ 1.97s 30mph @ 2.95s 40mph @ 4.11s 50mph @ 5.19s 60mph @ 6.69s 70mph @ 8.15s 80mph @ 10.28s 90mph @ 12.45s 100mph @ 14.99s 1/4mile @ 15.01s ~ 100.4mph The 60mph time is 0.9s below quoted figures and the 100mph time is a full 2.3s below. I doubt know if the 330i would be any quicker than that but if it was I don't think it would be by much and also remeber that these figures are for a manual, I did own a DSG one before this one and it was even quicker. Also the handling of the GTI is very enjoyable for a fwd, the rear is very playful and it's adjustable with the throttle. I will agree that it's build isn't up to BMW's standard but it's solid and reliable, plus the cost has to be miles below that of the 330i. P.S. Please don't tell the wife I was thrashing her car to within an inch of it's life. |

My vote is for the GTI, its a nice easy to mod very cool looking car. 330 is more for hauling around 3 or 4 people and is a nice sports sedan.

Both are German. You can't lose! I'd say drive both because that's ultimately what it comes down to. I've test driven cars before that I thought were "ok" and fell in love.

Don't care for resale, gonna keep my next car for a while. VW seemed more fun to drive for me, 330i was kind of boring. I'm too used to the 750Li. MPG is way better in the GTI.

I have a 08 E90 335xi manual and I just bought a 08 GTI DSG 4dr for my soon to be 16 year old son. I have been driving the GTI on an off and so far it is a great car. Excellent mpg and pretty quick. Is very tossable and nimble. Nice features, excellent rear seat room, practical with the fold down seats. Since your in a warm climate the better traction in snow is probably not a selling point. I like BMW's but for the $$ the GTI is a pretty good car. Either one would be pretty nice but the GTI will be and feel quicker. Good luck with your decision and drive safe.

I still get a buzz out of driving the wife's GTI and that's from someone who drives an E92 M3. What does that not tell you.
Buy the Golf and enjoy. |

I've never heard a bad review of the GTI. My sister has one and I really like driving it. The 2.0T is a great engine. Eurotuner just named it one of the top tuner cars. You'll have more fun with the VW IMO.
