Maybe I'd rather see you drunk than texting

Texting while driving is even more dangerous than holding the phone to your ear. Did they make that illegal for the July 1st law in california? I see people doing it all the time, so dangerous

They overlooked it when the law was first in place. I believe they added it later....

The only time I EVER text while I'm behind the wheel is when I am stopped at a light. If the light turns green I put the phone down and then just resume at the next red light.

In California, you can text, play games on your phone, take pictures, pretty much anything.. so long as the phone isn't held up to your ear..
Not only from a driving standpoint, but texting while doing anything important is pretty risky although many of us have done it without incident. Officials are saying the engineer was texting before the Metrolink crash occurred.. |

Yeah, but at $20 a ticket for talking on your phone, people don't think that it will hurt very much. They should have priced it at the same price as running a red light or something.

Here's from the CA DMV (btw, drivers under 18 in CA can't use any phone, hands-free or not):
Q: Does the new “hands-free” law allow drivers 18 and over to text message while driving? A: The law does not specifically prohibit that, but an officer can pull over and issue a citation to a driver of any age if, in the officer’s opinion, the driver was distracted and not operating the vehicle safely. Sending text messages while driving is unsafe at any speed and is strongly discouraged. So, it's officially "discouraged" and (as already mentioned in this thread) up to the cop if he/she thinks it's distracting. Well, that was a poorly written law..... |

Give everyone a manual car: -it will keep people more focused on driving -its pretty damn hard to text and shift at the same time -92% of women wont be able to drive anymore -less gas consumption cuz there will be fewer people on the road -manual cars are more efficient anywho -->thoughts? |

I used to text all the time while driving. its not that hard if you limit the texts to less than 5 words. I can text without even looking at the screen and I know alot of people(girls) who can do it faster and better even with a 5spd. But if they can enforce the ban it'll be safer for everyone. I can't text while driving now because i have one of those touch screen phones.
