if they seriously start charging a monthly on heated seats i will definitely jump ship to another brand.
what's next? comfort access subscription? Pay to open your sunroof fully?

And here I am feeling bad for spending 200$ to get CarPlay on my 2016 F86. Glad I made that decision cause this sounds like a whole lot of extra charges coming in the near future.

I'm already thinking of switching to MB (C or GLC), I'm growing tired of BMW after 10 years and 3 cars later, currently have E92 335i and F10 535d, both great cars, but the new cars aren't doing it for me, especially that 4 series front end, and no ventilated seats in 3/4 series... Oh, also that back end of the X6 is horrible.
I didn't watch this video, but a monthly charge for heated seats is ridiculous. |

There is so much wrong with the extra charges path. Will have to see where this goes...
For instance, why put the heated seats in the car and then charge me to unlock them? Or is their plan designed to weaken out used/CPO cars? Where you can pick it up and then have to pay to unlock all the options the last buyer paid to add on? Since options don't add much to used car prices currently. |

I think you guys are missing the point. They can build the cars with all the features on them, which is faster and cheaper than building to order, and then people can unlock whichever features they want, or cancel those they don’t. Someone in Minnesota find the perfect car in Florida except it doesn’t have heated seats? Click - now it does. Active Cruise? Got it.
Btw, this is how Tesla works. Perhaps you’ve heard of them? They seem to be doing ok with it. |

Agreed. I can see some novelty or specialized "fun" features being offered as subscription-based (e.g., lap timers or recorders) as not everyone uses them, but such basics as heated seats? Will they progress onto other things like AC or one-touch window controls next? Maybe they will rethink some of this as they did with CarPlay. Hate to say my X5 may be my last BMW when the lease is up in two years if this is the stuff they are doing...

Calm down, people... once the coders break this subscription service we will have all the options enabled for $299 on a Saturday morning.

Awesome. BMW has great software. Not quite as innovative and out front as Tesla, but solid software with great features

But in my opinion, if you put in hardware like seats or adaptive lights into the car from the factory, you pay this piece of hardware, but then you have to pay again to unlock the feature to make it work...a simple software unlock that is absolutely no additional effort for BMW....for me this is pureley playing the „ lets milk the customer" game. That goes into same direction as if you would buy the car, so you payed for it and it is yours, but in order to make it drive from A to B you have to pay again... |

Unlikely. This model moves authentication and security from a fixed-in-time system in the car to authentication with the cloud, which is always evolving. The cloud will win.

Some hot shot from ESADE that joined BMW in Munich likely got a promotion for this idea.

I initially got so excited when I read the overview about Apple CarKey being available in this "third quarter" update and took that to mean that the whole "July 2020" thing must've meant for cars that have it preinstalled...
... then I read the part where the "NFC hardware" required to make it work is only on July 2020 build cars and onwards. What rubbish. |

While BMW software is quite OK, from my point of view it is simple and far from having 'great features'. To have a properly personalized car, that can do as simple task as remember your drive settings, you have to code stuff on your own (or use some external specialists), as 99,9% of the dealers will tell you 'it is not possible to do that' and even if you do that coding yourself, you end up with features that makes the software look like some beta version, just with minimal set of features enabled to get by. Not to mention the OTA software upgrades, which I believe came in only because of Tesla showed the automotive industry 'how it is supposed to be done'. The other thing is that they ALWAYS ditch the software in your car if new version is up. Most of the time, you get minimal updates that fix issues you never know existed and then its game over. You cant add new stuff without aftermarket addons, even the 'car key' seems like to work only on new vehicles, even though BMW knew for quite some time what hardware will be required and that they can update it remotely. So I cannot say anything good about BMW software, besides that it works fine most of the time. |

Tesla is the only example of a more advanced software tech in a luxury car, but I think they are doing things too fast and there are headaches with that. My coworkers tesla landed in a ditch when the auto park failed. That's a true story, he is an engineer himself so he should be capable of operating it. Bmw has well tested, well featured software. That's why I am interested in seeing what they do with the i4 and self-driving tech, because it may be out later than others but it will be safe |
