Test drove a TT 2.0t - review - a bit long winded
Was at the Audi Showroom with a friend to have a look at the A5. None were in stock so we ended up having a look at the TT.
No 3.2 to test drive so took out the TT 2.0t convertible. First impressions: The new shape is a really huge improvement. The gaps between the body panels are tiny - much better than the e92. And tail lights were striking. I really likes the way they looked. Interior: Miles and miles better than the e92. Loved the reading light buttons. They were almost like a touch panels - The travel was at the bare minimum and they felt great to touch. Most of the buttons were similar. Switched on the headlights and the night time instrumentation was very classy. A much richer orange - almost reddish. Very very nice touch. Didn't particularly like the A.C vents but they fit in with the overall look and feel of the car - besides they were better than the e92's anyday. Driving: Well, the 2.0 is more of a cruising engine. Did not have much grunt to it. But it did pull to 60mph pretty decently. The shifts were a bit clunky (DSG) and the exhausts popped pretty loudly at every shift. After about 90mph there wasn't much grunt from the engine and it really struggled. While the steering wheel itself was a thing of beauty, it was not communicative at all. I had no idea how much grip I had and was having trouble placing the car perfectly - coming in and out of turns (could be that I need to get used to the car, but I don't think that was it.). The worst bit was the brakes. A couple of times I braked hard on a gently curve and on a straight and each time the car bucked sideways - very strange and did not instill confidence at all. My friend agreed with me on most of these points and we dropped the car off and went over to BMW to test drive the 135i - unfortunately it was out so have booked it for a test drive tomorrow evening. In conclusion: We are really spoiled by the e92 335i. It is a seriously great car - a great all round car. Ample power, ridiculous torque band, comfort, trunk space, back seats and awesome handling and driving feel. |

I almost bought the new gen TT Roadster, but I wasn't blown away by the driving experience. The interior is typically Audi... just gorgeous. From the outside it's a thing of beauty. But I drove both the V6 and I4 and while they were both "okay", neither one did for me what the 335i did. I'll never forget my first test-drive in a 335i... it was awesome. My wife even said, "you have to buy this car". So I did. I'm on the waiting list for the 09 TTS just so I can test-drive it.

Yeah - I like VAG products, but BMW cars drive so much better.

I dunno. The TT is a good looking car in a very direct sense, but it does absolutely NOTHING for me. I don't even know why. It's just so...calculated. Everything looks so planned and simple. It has the basic elements to looks good: a long-ish hood, a swooping roofline, a short rear decklid, an aggressive front fascia, sculpted sides, and a nice diffuser, but it just doesn't move me in any way whatsoever.
There doesn't seem to be any creativity in it, if anyone sees what I mean.

I've read all your posts and agree with almost all your points. The TT is beautiful. Inside and out. But I have a question. What makes it a chick car? I don't get it. I've heard Miata's refered to as a chick car and now the TT. Handleing aside I would'nt mind owning one. But how do you avoid the chick car. Is there a list somewhere.

I agree with the TT comments... it's a beautiful car, inside and out, but it doesn't "move" you the way a BMW does. As for the chick's car comment -- I've seen very few of these on the road, and when I have, they're seldom driven by a woman. Especially the coupe. I can see why it would appeal to a woman, but it would be the same appeal for men.

I am a little surprised that you found the DSG to be clunky, after owning one I would say that it's still have superior smoothest to the M-DCT in my M3. Also the engine is gutless over 90mph, you are comparing a 197hp thing with something else with over 300hp, remember that when making comparisons.
I would agree though with your assessment of the steering, it's one thing Audi need to sort before they can be taken seriously as driver's cars. One thing I will say is that familiarity brings confidence and within a week or two of owning one you will know exactly where it is on the road and how to place it in a corner, also without the feed back for the steering your other senses, like your bum, relay info back about the road surface and you will be surprised just how good that is. P.S. Drive a TT-S and see if you still feel the 335i is that much better, it's one great little pocket rocket. |

The 3.2 is also gutless,, it has peak tq. for less than 1,000rpm.
And also the frickin cute little thing is priced at $54k. Now a 2.0T awd, would be fun to chip and crusie in,, but not for $44k+. NEXXXXXXXXXXXXT. |

I understand that the I am comparing 197hp to 300+ hp. It just felt weaker than it should. The DSG felt clunky in auto mode. And the popping of the exhaust at each gear change felt odd. I do have to say that the DSG in manual mode was superior to the auto in the 335. Those shifts were smooth and quick. Was impressed with that. The TT-S is not coming to the middle east for another year |

What I thought were really rare around here were 335s. I've started to see more and more of them recently, though. For the first 6-7 months I had my car, I barely saw any. |

I owned a 2004 TT Roadster for 31 days and lost it to an old man who blew through a red light and hit me head-on. For the short time I had it, I loved it. I still want one, especially when it's snowing outside! |
