No more wine - acid reflux
Well. I love wine. But in the last few months, every time I drink it, I get HORRIBLE and debilitating heart burn. When I don’t drink for a few days, it goes away. Ergo - wine gives me acid reflux. I read about it online. Apparently, in some people, alcohol depresses the muscles that control the lower esophageal sphincter so that it doesn’t close fully, which allows stomach acid to flow out and up. Hence the pain.
There are thousands - THOUSANDS of charlatans out there offering everything from prostate massage to coffee enemas to holistic pills that will cure you if you take them forever. I call bullshit. If I just don’t drink - I have no problem. Sigh. I had a good run. Over forty years of alcohol enjoyment. I guess it just caught up with me. I don’t really mind quitting - I’ve done it before for years at a time. So here goes nothing again. Say hello to sober me. |

Winemakers have the ability to add up to 250 chemicals (wine stabilizers, preservatives, additives). The FDA also allows up to 350ppm of sulfites be added (they are needed but not at these high levels). It may not be the wine itself but rather what they are using in wine. Alcohol doesn't have any type of label that tells you what they add. Organic wine doesn't use chemicals in the growing process but they can add it in bottling.
I've been drinking clean wine that's independently lab tested to ensure the chemicals aren't added. It makes such a difference. No more headaches & don't feel like shit the next morning. We went to eat last night with friends & had 2 bottles of Caymus. I woke up with a raging headache & my husband woke up in the middle of the night with one. I've gotten to the point where I bring my own wine to a restaurant & pay corking fees to avoid this. Last night reminded me of why I've been doing this & wont be drinking that again. |

I quit wine after ~ 30 years and switched to bourbons. Much less volume, less carbs, less heart burn and most important of all, headaches are gone for good. Don't miss it one bit.
Like mentioned above, I switched to "organic" or low acidity wines from Oregon for a while, but they tasted weird, so no more. |

I have terrible reflux problems that have worsened as I get older, and have taken Prilosec daily for a very long time (as directed by GI doctor). I have somehow been fortunate thus far not to be bothered by wine, but can’t have dairy products at night, try to control my portions (try being the operative word) and am starting to understand why older people eat dinner so early.
I agree with earlier post about talking to your doctor, be it primary care or GI. Unfortunately the answer may be to skip the wine, but have the conversation and try Rebekahb‘s suggestion. Good luck and keep us posted.

Wine is incredibly "dirty" so it gives headaches to many that drink it.
I myself, like you, get vicious heartburn from it as well. Scotch was recommended to my good friend, who's also a doctor years ago (30+) and I get no heartburn, no hangover. |

If I was suffering from Headaches, dizziness, and shitting myself,
I'd likely cut out and throw away my liver if it would cure those symptoms. Might just be me though. |

Thanks for all of the great and thoughtful replies. This is my fifth day without wine or any other alcohol. The first two days were very uncomfortable, the third and fourth mildly so, and this morning I’m feeling almost back to 100%.
I’m not really a bourbon or whiskey fan, but I might - in a few weeks - explore the effects of a good scotch. |

A friend of mine makes his own wine as a hobby. If anyone is concerned about the contents in store-bought wine, it might be worth making your own as an experiment where you have control over what's in the bottle.....

I have all but stopped drinking wine. I may have a glass at dinner, but we don't go out to dinner due to 'rona, so there's that. I stopped because of the horrible way I felt the next morning.
White wine was gone for me quite a few years ago. For whatever reason (aging taste buds or olfactory senses I assume) I completely stopped liking even the smell of it. Now I'm pretty much that way with reds too. |
