Next Generation WRX Rumors

This might be a fun car if the rumors are true: 400hp and 366lb-ft from a 2.4L Turbo Boxer, 6 speed manual, 3460lbs. Let's hope Subaru can pull it off.

I like the styling concept. Let's see about the rest.

I realize it’s in the conceptual design stage, but I hope they turn the Civic Type R knob to the left a little...

They always do...it will look quite muted compared to the concept if history repeats.

I'm hoping for that power boost, they've been comparatively under powered for a decade.

Subaru has a long history of making/marketing really nice concepts, that are ruined by production. I'll take this with a grain of salt...

All I want is the tires, the rest is copy / busy / or meh.

1. Subaru will never beat the 22b.
2. I miss my 2005.

They need their engines to step into the 21st century.

The EJ25 was a disaster.

If ever there was car in dire need of a refresh and new power plant it’s the WRX.

Mine was absolutely fine. 2005 STi, Cobb Stage 2 tune. It burned 1/2 quart of oil every 3K miles from the day it was new until I totaled it at 117K miles. Otherwise not a stitch of trouble.

Your typical WRX owner won't be able to afford these.

That's a good thing.

Not early on. It's the changes that they made to them.

The 2004/2005 EJ25 would support 425/475 indefinitely (FP Green + supporting mods), as would the trans, and clutch.

The problem was the internal changes they made to the motor starting in 2006, and idiots wanting them to be 500+ hp monsters.

The car/engine/trans was made for 425, end of that story.

That makes sense. I owned two; 08 & 11'. Blew 3 engines on OTS stg 1 Cobb. I moved to my first E92 M3 afterwards and that was that.

The Golf R really ate into the STI's market, atleast in Canada.

I’ve never known a single Subaru owner (and I know many) who didn’t blow their engine by 70k miles. Not one. I live in Chattanooga near a college town so it’s the perfect place for Subaru drivers. Foresters, Imprezas, wrxs, STIs, i have friends with all of them. And all of them have had their engines replaced a least once.

I had an '05 STi with nothing but an exhaust and pro-tune. I had it down the 8th 117 times, have the slips to prove it. I doubled that on the street at least. Not a single problem in 36,000 miles. The guy that bought the car after me never had an issue, I sold it for him with 48K on the clock. The current owner has never had a problem, car has 110K on the clock.

Blah-ditty-blah-blah-blah. You know idiots. Thousands of '04/'05 STi's running around with 70K+ mileage with no issues. Of course, those owners had a clue, and didn't mod the thing past its capability...

I've owned 9 Subarus including 2 WRXs, 2 STIs, 2 Legacys and 3 Forester XTs...not blown a one...and one of my STis was self tuned with meth injection.

They blow their ringlands because of low speed pre ignition. Since manufacturers have switched to smaller direct injection engines, they've been seeing what us EJ owners have seen for years in the conditions of high load due to lower RPMS and boost.

A little oil in the combustion chamber seeping past the rings preignites uncontrollably and you get detonation against the side of the piston.

I saw the detonation happen when I was tuning UTEC in 05 in gears 4/5 and part to full throttle. Boost comes on and detonation takes off with no controlling it via the tune.

Oils have been reformulated very recently for Dexos 1 Gen 2 standards (now SN Plus/SP) and the reduced calcium/sodium in the additives have helped curb the LSPI events in the EJ engines.

After my 05 STI I learned you don't put this engine in that condition (low RPM high load). I mitigated the LSPI with methanol injection...but had that failed....

I thought that condition is bad for any engine, regardless of make.

Most of them weren't modded. Lots of moms who had a stock outback, etc. Obviously my experience doesn't speak for everyone but I know of over 10 Subies between 2002 and 2015 that have blown up and I hven't known even one person who owned one that didn't. Most were automatics too.

Of ALL the cars I've owned that I no longer own, there are only 2 cars that truly miss.

My 2000 E46 323Ci and my 2009 Subaru WRX wagon.

To be fair, you need to specify the STi. The WRX has been running the FA20 for 5 years now.

If the styling is less Civic Type R, and the power/performance numbers are there I'll likely buy one next fall. Well, and hopefully it doesn't have the painful lag on top super short gearing they have had forever as well.

High load, low RPM is bad for any engine.

But from what I understand, most Subaru's blow up because guys put shitty tunes on them, beat them like a rented mule, and then wondered why they had a problem.

Subaru always manages to screw it up, will probably have a 4EAT or something ridiculous. Anyway, it’ll still end up with the engine in front of the axle. What they really need to do is go to hybrid drive for the front wheels, combustion engine for rear and move the engine back.

It is, but the EJ is especially prone to severe and uncontrollable detonation in this scenario.

To be clear, these are the conditions that many new manufacturers are intentionally putting their vehicles in with small displacement turbo engines that are intentionally holding gears longer to squeeze out every little bit of MPG they can.

This is why LSPI has become a recent concern for more manufacturers which forced a change in the oil standards to mitigate it by reducing additive content that was shown to contribute. The result is are have been seeing fewer ringland failures in the community. Subaru still hasn't switched to using a reformulated factory fill oil from Idemitsu for the EJ to my knowledge, however.
