Hey guys, I'm a senior this year trying to decide which colleges to apply to. I was wondering if you guys could recommend colleges based on my "app"

GPA - 3.0 (3.3 Weighted)
Full IB Diploma Candidate
SAT - M 600, CR 600, W 600 (First attempt - retaking on Nov 1st after Kaplan, aiming for 2000+)

Extra Currics:

Football (Varsity Co-captain 2007; Captain 2008)
GSA (2006-present)
Habitat for Humanity (2006-present)
Italian Club (2007-present)
Key Club (2007-present)
Student Government President (2007-present)
Yearbook Committee (2008-present)

Volunteer work:

Over 200 hours

Class Rank:

Top 50% (Not great I know, trying to get in top 35% by semesters end)

I want to major in a branch of Business...as of now, Business Management is looking like the top choice.

The schools I'm looking at are:

Fordham
Binghamton
Baruch
Boston University
Babson College

What schools (that aren't listed) do you guys think I'd have a shot at?

well, in that area, you can't go wrong w/ applying to Columbia, Penn, Cornell.

Unfortunately, you are not getting into Ivy Leagues unless your relatives went there. get it out of your mind, and don't worry about it. There are plenty of good schools in America. Pick one that is right for you without killing you. My sister went to John's Hopkins and wished she didn't as she spent her college career in the library.

fordham is ridiculous. they require 3.7 as a freshman to apply. It also is more work than its prestige really deserves. Ranked just over Rutgers, which would be a lot easier.

going to boston university is fun, as Boston is a big college town. you do however, have to deal with judgment. You will be sharing trains with Harvard, MIT, and BC students. It can be kind of intimidating. The good news is you can give glares to those poor Northeastern kids. BU also has a high jewish population, earning it the nickname B.Jew. Don't know if that is good or bad, but it gets brought up a lot.

Both those stories come from friends of mine that go to both schools.

I can offer you nothing on the other schools listed. Have you organized into Reach, Middle, Safety? Your 1200 Math/crit qualifies you for top 100 schools, and if the schools look at activities over GPA, you are in good shape.

If you are willing to throw a hail mary, apply to NYU. One of the most prestigous business programs (Stern MBA students average $140k right out of school).

Rutgers has made its way to become a top 75 school, and I think you can get in. It's also becoming a real cool place to be these days as school pride is at an all time high.

Safety might be something like Ithica. Don't know to much about it, but the school gets ranked in US News.

Try a 'Little Ivy' - Williams, Amherst, Wesleyan (very liberal), Bates, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Swarthmore.

Small liberal arts college in the Northeast is the way to go. Skip the big 'mill'/state schools.

You seem pretty well-rounded; apply to a large number, wouldn't hurt.

I think Bucknell or Colgate would be great choices. Also check out Barnard, Davidson, and Clarkson.

Find the best guidance/college counselor at your school, and hit him/her up for feedback. Shit, talk to all of them. Why not?

Research, research, research - read all you can online about them. School or local library (or local Borders or Barnes & Noble) have many (hint - use many) books comparing the different undergrad schools.

edit - Ithaca would not be a top choice, but a successful friend went there (now doing business consulting)

edit #2 - sorry, not too many business schools associated with small liberal arts colleges - check out American and GW in D.C., and Univ. of Richmond (again, why not? Stretch, but great school).

With a 1200 SAT, you are out of reach for all Ivy's and all the elite, but non-ivy schools, like NYU. This is only assured by your very low GPA. I don't mean to be harsh but it's the truth and take it from someone who has been there and done that.

My advice: bang out the SAT (try to get above a 1300), get your GPA up, those should be your #1 priorities. Apply broadly.

But with the grades you have CURRENTLY, these schools will be a reach to near match:

Fordham - I strongly recommend this school
Binghamton - cold weather and remote location
Baruch - not bad for business, in NYC which is a major plus
Boston University - very good school
Babson College - not sure about this one

Baruch is probably a safe match while BU is a high reach. Don't stress too much about prestige, nobody really gives a shit where you went to college when all is said and done anyway. What you DID in college is what matters!

yeah, but he's refering to the math+verbal (those two should be in the 1300+ range at a minimum)

i just helped my little bro thru this entire process, so my advice would be similar:

-work hard in the kaplan class, and get your SAT as up there as possible. take as many practice exams as you can, and do all of the additional homework that they assign you (this will be tough given the other demands on your time)

-ID a list of 8-15 schools (no more, cuz then you wont have to do a good job on the applications), divided into 3 buckest "stretch" "medium" and "safe schools"

-yes, GPA and SAT count for a lot. however, also focus on your 'story'; this is what you wish to convey to the admissions committee. GPA, SAT, transcript are a few facets of your application, the other BIG thing is recommendations and essays. once you have your 'story', you can identify areas that you can address using your essays and recs. i remember when i went thru this process many years ago, the essays were the toughest thing. buy a book on successful undergrad admission essays to see examples..

-for the recs, set up some time w/ each of the people who will be writing the rec. make sure you have a couple of points noted down that you feel highlight your accomplishments, goals, etc. this helps gives the person writing the rec some context

what major are you considering? there is also manhattan college which i went to for a year and i transfered to NYU which you should also apply to. there is also NYIT in the city which is a few blocks away from Fordham.

above all else, get your parents involved. this is an important time in your life. Don't listen to all of us on the message boards, only you and your family knows what is best for YOU.

You should look into schools in PA. Penn State has a very good business program and their entrance req's aren't too bad. Villanova is rated #12 in business programs (BusinessWeek; list excludes the obvious ivys). I went to 'Nova for ugrad (finance & accounting), law schl & my MBA (finance) and, at no stage, was I not a competitor for jobs w/top firms (E&Y, KPMG, GS, MS, etc.). I got 40+ interviews through on campus recruiting as a ugrad there in my senior year. ~25 callbacks, a bunch of offers. I hear they have gotten tighter with their entrance req's but you would have a chance. Sorry, NYU Stern isn't even worth the app. fee or spending time on personal statement b/c no way you'll get in w/those grades.
