It always cracks me up since it's such a lose-lose proposition.

People who know cars will immediately identify you're a fake and laugh at you.

People who don't know cars will have no clue and just think it's another Bimmer or Merc.

On a side note, Mercedes is straight up doing this from the factory on their 43/53 fake "AMG" models. Everybody thinks those cars are the real deal. Combine that with the V4 coming to the new C63 and things are just getting sadder by the day for the AMG division.

BMW is doing the same with their fake "M" models with their M2xx, M3xx, M4xx, etc.

Exactly. I’ve had two friends recently say they liked the new M3 and after asking them learned they saw the M340i and didn’t know the distinction.

Trying to figure out if you feel an M340i is a fake M car. It's an M Performance car, right?

Actually I think the 4-cylinder M139 is a pretty awesome engine. Not sure if you've driven a car with that engine or not. Pretty surprising.

"this is quite simply the most stupidest and most embarrassing thing you can do as a car enthousiast..."

I always thought adding fake exhausts was the most stupidest and most embarrassing thing.....and car manufacturers also stepped into that trend.
So who cares about a few fake badges....

The BMW 'M' cars are long gone since BMW themselves started to put 'M' badges on a 218D grand tourer (yes, a dorky 2 liter Diesel MPV with factory fit M badges, even on their press releases....)
"M" is now just "Marketing", it has now no other meaning at all.... (unless BMW starts racing with 218D grand tourers, but I expect that chance pretty close to 0)

No because M3 owners wouldn't feel manly enough. They want to make sure people understand what they are driving

Kind of grimace when I see fellow F80/82 owners put the black “Competition” label under the M3/4 badge on their Comp cars. Yes I know we have Comps, but the ONLY people who are going to know the difference already know it’s a Comp car so leave the cheesy badge off please lol.

What exactly are we competing in anyway for the badge? Competition has always sounded so dumb to me.

I will humbly suggest that badge engineering (via an adhesive of choice) is easily explained by evolutionary psychology: how humans learned to advertise their availability for any number of purposes, including territorial claims, family formation, celebratory rituals.

This practice is unlikely to conclude in the foreseeable future, providing astute observers with more than one opportunity to share a comical reaction.

I personally don’t care what people want to do with their cars. For BMWs specifically, M is so overplayed by BMW why does it matter if someone wants to put an M badge on their car?

I get annoyed when I see this guy in my neighborhood with a standard X5 xDrive40i that decided he'd be cool by attaching an M badge to the left of that X5 so it of course becomes a non-existent MX5 model. Most people probably won't know the difference. He's also got an M Performance decal on his rear bumper. Oh and then there's an Apple decal on the rear window just to make sure people know he's an Apple fan. WTF.

Whatever, man. To each his own.
At least they don't have a M mark embossed on the seats nor do they attach an M badge on the front grill.

It uses a lot of the M division's stuff though and it's also not a standard 3er.

Does it actually offend you when you see cars like an M340i or M440i? How about an M550i?
