If it looks like that 8/10, would do. CF mirrors are a nice touch

How do they sign off on these names without ever thinking if the general consumer would even understand what it means.

xDrive and eDrive? i4 gets eDrive but no xDrive, and the iX gets xDrive but no eDrive despite being an EV? Why can’t either have both?

35, 40, 50? Why not go off kW h like Tesla? You’re setting yourself up for consumers thinking your electric numbers are referring to battery size, immediately making consumers think = worse than Tesla (ex: P85/100D). And M “60?” The number only previously used for V12s?

I’m even struggling to understand this. Again I’m referring to the average consumer here. None of these names are going to stick and it’s just going to cause confusion.

The new nomenclature is just overwhelming not to say more...

Just call it iX for electric models and follow the past way of doing things and put the number based on the battery size like the 3 series 1.8 cc used to be 318 for example.

The screwed up the whole thing so bad that now you get lost in translation with those stupid things.

Not that I care anyway, will never buy electric...

I am waiting for iX edrive 0.5 xDrive E Competition Service Pack 2

Visiting home currently. Drove a Model 3 yesterday then drove my father's Macan S right after.

There's really no comparison. The Model 3 is fast sure, but it feels like an appliance. No noise, no vibrations, no gear selector, barren interior. A totally sterile experience. The Macan S on the other hand makes great noises, has tight steering with sufficient road feel, and a proper shifter.

EVs are great appliances for the masses, but as a car enthusiast I'm not convinced.

If you check my thread, you'll see, I think, three i4 names announcements that I made not because I was trying to sound important and was pulling random names out of my ass but because BMW was actually going back and forth on different names and I was dutifully reporting every turn on that weird journey.

This is like Apple's old Mac naming convention from the 1990s. A shocker. They are great descriptors but not good product names. Tesla does this much better.

And this is one of my goals: make an EV that's not as sterile as a freshly cleaned hospital room.

Thanks yngulgyn.

I'm surprised they're not doing an i4 xDrive40 out of the gate. I would expect that to eventually be the volume model, similar to the 330i xDrive today (and 430i GC xDrive soon).

The names don't mean much until we get more details about the battery and motor output. I suspect the two M models (M50, M60) will have similar total power with the battery capacity being the main differentiator.

I think the names of the i4 and iX versions are as expected how BMW's currently are named, not very surprised there. With the name you can eather indicate the battery capacity or the performance.
There will be a 420i, 430i and a M440i. So it makes sense to have a i4 ...30 / 40 / M50. I guess the i4...30 will be somewhere in the performance range of a 430i. It Would be harder for everyone to clasify the i4 models within the 4er family if you had a i4 80e (?).
Still very curious about the iX M60

so the only xDrive i4 is the M Performance version? That's 100%? Did BMW learn nothing from the electric X3? Aside from the fact that they'd be cutting off the majority of potential sales since many people WANT all-wheel drive, the range and efficiency are better with two smaller motors making the same amount of total power than one big motor. Hell, Tesla will have tri-motor vehicles out before BMW has anything with two.

That's not necessarily the case. Other models can and probably will be added later.

But yes, if these are indeed all of the launch models, I agree that not including a lower tier AWD i4 is a questionable move.
