This is just crazy to watch.

The video only if you don't care for the commentary of the article. It was an interesting point about sharks and deer though.

The deer are bad and moose are even worse. Not usual to see deer in the daytime and not usually a herd, at least in our part of Canada.

Pretty sure you could spread out some nice fresh carpaccio just from the wipers of the car that got this on video. A little EVOO, Citrus, maybe some capers and some coarse ground salt... quite the track-side snack.

Is that real? I've never encountered a deer on the road but hear about it all the time. Is it commonly a herd, like this?

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is. I've never encountered a deer crossing in front of me either but it's a real thing and people often die from impact. Just imagine speeding along a road somewhere and actually encountering a situation like this! All in all both the driver and deer were lucky.

I've encountered/hit several. Also, ex-wife has hit several and had girlfriends that have hit them. It's very common, especially during hunting season. I've only seen a herd like this once before. I was drafting a Penske truck (company rental relocating merchandising furniture from one at&t retail location to another) on the interstate once. Four ran out in front of him. One got away, he drilled the other three. The last one ended up in pieces all over my car. We both had to pull off the interstate. My car was absolutely covered in blood and various deer parts. Completely demolished the front of our rental truck. I had to find the nearest car wash just to be able to see to continue the drive. It was crazy.

Was involved in another incident years before this one, where the deers head actually broke out the passenger window of the car in front of me. I'm sure the deer was attempting to jump at the last minute, but it appeared as if he rammed the car. The deers head penetrated the interior, the body rolled on top of the car, the momentum of the car and the impact of the deer almost decapitated the deer. This was the first time my car got a bath by a deer that look like it exploded in front of me. The end result was that the passenger side of the car in front of me look like it had been t-boned, the deer rolled off the car before me, landed directly in front of me and did about $2k worth of damage to my car.

I know a guy here whose car was totaled in a collision with a deer. Let's see if he sees this thread and chimes in.

Those animals look a bit more like elk than the whitetail deer we commonly see in the US. Maybe they are Red Stag.

Here in America, the deer normally don't form a herd that size, especially with males and females together. Usually a herd is mainly female deer (does) and the young deer that aren't weaned yet. The male deer (bucks - typically the ones with antlers) tend to live alone and only group together during mating season when they are chasing the does.

Other than that, yes, deer vs car accidents are quite common in the US, but it is usually one deer that gets hit, not a herd of them.

I’ve had a few close calls with deer. We have property up in the mountains in PA. Had a buck jump over my car. He was running in a field that was elevated next to the road and took a flying leap. Pretty scary.
