The Pontiac G8 is actually a very fine car. I'd get one in a heartbeat if I need a large-ish family car that would double-duty as a beater.

seriously, GM doesn't need all these funky off brands. it's just more overhead. they can package everything under just a couple brand names just fine. car companies all over the world do it. pontiac, buick, saab, and hummer have all had sagging sales for a long time...do away with them and cut costs exponentially. oldsmobile went defunct a long time ago and no one seems to notice them gone. if they were to shut all these brands down, any GM service department in the country could still honor warranties, most of the parts are exactly the same! the only differences would be trim pieces, and even many of those are just rebranded and regurgitated.

I heard they will consider shutting down some brands to save some money. Unfortunately, them shutting down Saturn = no more German-engineered Opels for the US. That said if they shut down those three, I would gladly welcome Opel here as a "new" brand.
I thought it was funny that some coworkers who were here for a few months from the UK chose a G8 as their rental car. |

They won't shut down Saturn. Saturn is their most profitable car company they have.
They will sell or shut down GMC, Pontiac, Hummer, and Saab.....but Saturn isn't going anywhere. |

Where did you hear this? I'd be really surprised if they tried to get rid of Saturn. I see them everywhere.

Not forever. GM owned about 50% until 1999 when they bought the rest. Yes, they gutted Saab and started bin sharing. They even moved most of the production to Germany. I hated them for doing that (x-saab fan here), but they were starting to make the complany profitable... a feat Saab couldn't do on it's own.

My first car was a 1984 Saab 900 Turbo.
Had a bit of balls (from the boost) and was solid as a brick Will miss Saab if they are sold/shut down. I think GM owns a percentage of the company? (not sure how much)

Hummer is going down for sure, they're sales have been horrible for a long time now. I've heard talks about Pontiac going down as well but the G8 does look promising as some said above.
A very quick car with lots of room and decent styling for about 30K. |

Where have you been all those years? Yes, SAAB is swedish but GM owns it. Ford owns part of Mazda, used to own Jaguar (now Tata owns it), BMW owns MINI and Rolls-Royce, Renault owns part of Nissan.
