College Student in need of Help...
Im currently taking Algebra II at my college. Im a freshmen and math is not my strongest subject
I'm currently using a Ti89 Graphing Calculator by Texas Instruments. This calculator does almost everything. (Solve, Factor, Expand, Zeros, Approx, ComDemon, PropFrac, nSolve etc... of equations.) Now, I need to start using a NON-Graphing calculator, basically a "Scientific Calculator." I need to find a Scientific Calculator that can do all of the above, like (Solve, Factor, Expand etc.... of equations.) but I don't need it to graph. Can anyone help me please? I can't find anything...

Why don't you ask your professor for some recommendations?
I'm going to finish my college career w/o ever needing to buy a graphing calculator at all. I found it pointless to be able to use it for HW, but not on exams. And I've taken Algebra, Trig, Bio Statistics, etc. |

By the way, aint solving, expanding, factoring ..etc the stuffs that you need to do them by hand? that's the only way to learn math. Calculator will let you do it faster but you learn crap! I used a Scientific Calculator "Casio fx-911Z" throughout my calculus classes in college. The professor made me do them all without the graphing calculator. Good luck! |

I graduated as an engineer and never used a graphing calculator in my life. I used a CASIO fx-300MS among other, less-than-$20 calculators. This one, for example, will show you how your equation would look like as if you were writing it down

To the best of my knowledge, there is no scientific calculator that can do solving, factoring, expanding and that's why the professor wants you to use only scientifics. Having a TI-89 do it for you is basically cheating because you don't even need to know how to do any of it to get the right answer.
I wasn't even allowed to use graphing up to Calc II because my 89 does a lot of integration and derivatives and Taylor's for you.

I remember some classes allowed me to use a cheat sheet, but I studied hard enough, and spent so much time making the cheat sheet, that it became worthless during the test. |

about calculators and tests... it really depends on your professor and how he or she makes the tests which may or may not allow you to use your calculator.
imo dont ever depend on your calculator. it is a resource you shouldn't want to use unless it's purely algebraic or graphing... you should trust in your own mathematical abilities

I went to UCI (mechanical engineer); never used a graphing calculator. Hell I've never used one in my life. But w/ the calculator I mentioned, you can see things typed out like 9 sin (30) and you press the equal sign and you'll get the answer. This got me through college fine...
If something really bugs the crap out of you leave the answer in eqn. form. I had a hot Math 2D TA who worked at Los Alamos, who thought we were really dumb; it was funny |

But will any of the scientific calculators perform... For Example.... (t+1)(t+2)(t-3) (a^3 + a^3 - 3a + 2 )/( a+2 ) y^2 = 5y + 6 a^2 - 2a -1 = 0 Square root (t+6) = t +4

Not the one I had... but this was nearly three years ago. I wouldn't know now. Fortunately I knew how to do it by hand...
If those are questions on a test I can see why they would disallow calculators. Those are insanely elementary. |

I went through college using a slide rule. As for cheat sheets, I had a professor allow us one half of one side of an IBM card. We could put anything we wanted on it. The theory behind this was, if you rewrote everything over and over again while trying to get it to fit in the end you didn't need the card.
