You're fired

Who has some entertaining stories of being fired, or "your friend" being fired....
Being let go from a job is never a fun thing but most of the time your next step ends up better anyway....Entertain me

I have never actually been fired myself. Of course, working for myself for the last 22 years have improved my odds of not getting fired.

I once got laid off on Friday and hit $50k in the lottery that same weekend, so getting laid off didn't seem so bad.

Was fired/laid off 2008ish. Me being a new hire and they weren't sure what was going to happen with the economy. It didn't really affect Canada but I'm glad in hindsight.

Started a new job shortly after that let me travel across Canada instead of being locked in a windowless office.

I was fired over the phone from my first job as a dentist in Florida. I guess complaining that I only made $8.00 a filling didn't help. It was good because I swore that I would never accept any HMO dental insurance when the day came for me to own my own practice.

We found out that a manager, who was married, was banging his direct report and got her pregnant. His wife also worked for the company, and the pregnant direct report was the daughter of the VP of another department.

There were no firings, but both parties were ‘gently encouraged’ to find other job opportunities…

Garage List
We had a director in our department who was a real witch. The day that she got the axe nearly 20 years ago is *still* celebrated every year in our department, with an "Operation House Drop" party...complete with Dunkin munchkins and a 3:30 PM parade down the hallway and out the back exit door playing "Ding Dong, the Wicked Witch is Dead."

Unfortunately, I am involved with the off-boarding process for my employer, and find no joy in any other employees being involuntarily separated.

Been fortunate to never have been fired but a couple years ago I was walking through the office with bankers box and one guy says "oh boy, who's desk you heading to?" I asked him why and he said whenever I have an empty bankers box and a box of tissues, someone gets the arse.

It's almost impossible to fire an employee now (if you are in a professional job)

You have to either do something immoral or illegal. For instance, lying about a corporate credit transaction.

Otherwise - there is too much risk with HR to fire anyone.

There was this top mgt dude who was always kinda full of himself, I can almost bet he orgasms to the sound of his own voice, it's that ridiculous. Just wouldn't shut up telling the whole world how great he is while sometimes putting down (of all ppl!) the top boss(!). Well, eventually it reached the top boss' ears and he planned it so that just before said dude went on his long vacation to go into his office to tell him he's getting his X fired. I guess that's the most brutal firing I've heard.

I dont know how you can say this, I work in Big tech, and we fire people all the time. Its At-will employment, and there is no reason needed or given. Friday will be your last day. Thanks.

An organization I was with several years ago went through a round of layoffs of roughly 10 people IIRC. They had the HR Director, HR Specialist, and COO do all the individual meetings. After what was thought to be the last layoff, the COO asks the HR Director to have a seat and says "we're letting you go as well" (I'm paraphrasing, of course).

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that. The HR Director was one of those people who everyone hated because of her incompetence but still thought she was hot sh!t and had an excuse for everything she messed up.

You can't just fire people without putting them on probation, etc. And even if so, there has to be a material reason why.

I'm talking about very large corporations...not mom & pop shops.

Over a decade ago company purchased another.

I was one of the 3 person committee that had to go with HR and the head of the business to consummate the deal. We separated the company into two rooms. One was the keepers, the other not so much...Was brutal having to collect everyones stuff coming out of that room. It was a smallish company and people were naturally gobsmacked by what occurred.

I had a 5 am flight back, and was definitely still drunk when I got on the plane from trying to drown the misery from the night before. I will never forget that hangover...

Reality bites..

Ok great, you're still wrong. We blind side people all the time.
Again, At-will employment. There are no warning firings all the time.

California is at-will, but from what I've experienced, companies better have a damn good reason for letting people go. Frivolous law suits for wrongful termination are everywhere.

You're obviously being dramatic to try to prove your point. I doubt your big tech company is blindsiding people all of the time.

The discussion is not layoffs either - it's about firing people for performance, etc. I guarantee you that's not happening and you probably saw 1 or 2 people terminated and you're compounding that into a bigger thing than it is.

Perhaps yes or no, but also different culture. I'm leaving some things out, he more than just occasionally bad-mouthed the top guy so it's justified.

Whatever...you can live in your false reality, but you are making a lot of incorrect assumptions about how the world works and obviously never read an at-will employment agreement or have actual experience in this domain.

I work in an enormous commercial sales business. When you get terminated, there is no document that says this is why you're being fired.

Its when you are being fired FOR CAUSE that you are given documentation why. That is because there is liability that the company needs to expropriate to you in case another party sues them.
I.e. harassment or illegal activity. It how they cover THEIR ass against your bad behavoir.
