F1 2022: Canadian GP - Montréal (June 19)

Montréal
When was the track built?
The man-made Notre Dame Island in the middle of the St Lawrence River was created for the 1967 Expo 67 World's Fair. Once the expo and the ensuing 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics had left town, some clever people decided to make a race track out of the island’s roads. And lo, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame, as it then was, came to be.

When was its first Grand Prix?
With the Canadian Grand Prix having been in search of a permanent home for a number of years in the 1960s and 1970s, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame first hosted the race in 1978. Fittingly, Gilles Villeneuve claimed his maiden win, at the track that would end up bearing his name.

What’s the circuit like?
The fast, low-downforce circuit is one of the drivers’ favourites. The track is quite stop-start, with lots of heavy-braking chicanes and the famous hairpin to get the anchors working hard. Out of the corners, though, the track is quick and flowing, while the most iconic piece of the circuit comes right at the end of the lap: the Wall of Champions, so-called after excursions into it from Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher during the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Why go?
The Montrealais really embrace their Grand Prix weekend, with the charming city turning into an F1-loving party town in the week leading up to the race. For the Grand Prix itself, the leafy setting makes the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve one of Formula 1’s most laidback venues.

Where is the best place to watch?
It’s got to be one of either Grandstand 15, 21 or 24, the three that surround the hairpin. It makes for a real amphitheatre vibe down there, as well as allowing you to see all the hairpin overtakes.

It's a great event, went years back when traveling into Canada was like visiting the next state. As long as you were not driving a 60/70's VW bus, another story.

Great City lots to visit and do.

Section 11...viewing the Senna Turn, a great out-braking, passing spot and the exit to the pits makes the race easier to follow. We've watched from a number of other sections, but this is by far our favorite.

I got a feeling Mercedes will be 2nd in constructors by Spa.

Ferrari is a championship contender run by vegetables. Red Bull's DNFs and problems seemed bad but they saved their engines, fixed their problems and taking steps forward. Ferrari keeps taking steps backward.

From the German magazine, Auto Motor und Sport..."The Ferrari engine has four kilowatt more than Honda, eight kilowatt more than Mercedes, twelve more than Renault. But much more important is the advantage in driveability. Toto Wolff recommends listening to the individual engines during acceleration. None revs up as smoothly as the Ferrari. This also makes it possible to drive a much more advantageous gear ratio. But the Ferrari power unit has a weak point and that is reliability. The higher the mileage, the greater the worries. This is also seen at Haas and Alfa Romeo."

Yup he proved it! People thought he couldn't handle the pressure because he made alot of stupid mistakes the williams, but he's silenced all those critics with his extreme consistency and out performing the car.

Not a fan of his but agreed. He deserved that seat - knew that all the way from Sakhir 2020. After this race, I also had my fingers crossed that Red Bull would give Checo a shot - that race was incredible.

I think this would actually disadvantage mercedes because they probably want more wind tunnel time that comes with third place. I think this is what will shake up the order now a days - who gets the most tunnel and CFD time.

The thing is redbull's DNF's were due to small issues like fuel pick up and fuel hoses (not including the fires from the mguk in the alpha tauri's), so not too bad. Ferrari are having major mechanical issues like turbos blowing so much more difficult to address. But it does seem like ferrari is just not a championship winning team with all their choke ups.

Red Bull has just overall shown that they have their shit together. From strategy to development to improvements. They truly are the definition of a championship constructor this season. Mercedes has too but unfortunately they're too stubborn to go back to square 1 and they desperately need to.

I think this season is now going to end up with;

Ferrari vs. Mercedes for #2
Alpine vs. McLaren for #3

It's hard to imagine that Red Bull won't destroy everyone this season.

Ferrari struggled in a deep hole with Charlie's Ferrari PU ..
And I think he has a hole in his PU as well !
Huge blue smoke tail clouds are always bad news ...

Let's keep in mind that Charlie got 2 DNF's in 3 races !
I'm pretty sure , Charlie's PU was pushed beyond the reliability limits .
He pulled 4 poles in a row ! WOW ! That was really something ! But this means he had to run 4 races in the superfast QF setup !

The bad news is that Ferrari has to step back now , and turn the Ferrari ponies down to avoid that his prancing horse blows again , and that will make Charlie slower in QF and even more in the race pace !

Ferrari gambled on one horse , everything for Charlie's prancing horse was/is a big mistake !
Too bad !

On the other hand : Ferrari will come at Silverstone (as planned) with a new upgraded superfast Ferrari PU ..
The million dollar question is : Will it reach the finish line , or not ?

MAX said : I don't want to win it in a fight against a broken car ...
Further he was asked what he actually thinks about the Ferrari PU failures ..
He said : At Ferrari the 5H1T is real !

The Honda engine is reaaaaaaaallly underrated.

I think it's the best engine overall on the grid right now.

Yup redbull is the benchmark team this season.

Ferrari were the benchmark then they ferrari'd

mercedes, well they know what it takes to win, but I don't think they can revert because they don't have the cash left over to redevelop, and I think they want to know why they have the issues they have so they can avoid it in the future. I mean they tackled porpoising on an ideal condition track, but then the other weaknesses (suspension) were exposed as a result. So that shows it isn't limited to the side pod, the whole car might be flawed/limited to a really small window, and that means there is too much to fix within a season especially on a budget.

I don't think it's underrated I think they are all really close. It is just drag and aero design that allows RB to be so fast, look at AMR they are setting really good trap speeds now with the change in concept.

The latest about porpoising :

The FIA rejected all the interpretations from the teams and started an investigation anyway , regarding the bouncing Mercedes 5H1T box !

• New FIA safety regulations are coming up ?
• Is an active suspension coming up ?

Horner said : That's like rewarding a team who messed it completely up !
