People who park right next to you

I parked on the 6th floor of this garage because there was nobody there. Floors 4 and 5 had plenty of open spots.

So that got me thinking... has anyone figured out WHY there's always that person who decides to park RIGHT NEXT to you when it's obvious you've purposely parked far away from everyone else? Is it because they think you care about your car and there won't be risk of you damaging theirs? Why not just park equally far away from others but still leave a couple spots between your car? What's the reason??

As of last night I was parked alone far away. If I go to the garage today, I'd say there's a 75% chance someone's parked right next to me despite plenty of other open spots.

Drives me batshit crazy! Isn’t there some kind of etiquette like men at a urinal? Skip a spot, damn it. I go out of my way to find the perfect spot far away from everyone. It never fails that someone parks right on top of me. I don’t mind too much when it’s another enthusiast but mostly it’s someone in a shit box parked way too close.

This was my favorite. 500 empty stalls in a parking deck, and this clown had to make his own spot where there was none, right next to my old white 5.

If it's someone here, sorry I called you a clown, but you are one

At least he is far enough away that his door swinging open won’t hit you.

I usually park far away from other cars if I can, and also have the problem with some random car parking right next to me. I think some folks really do it on purpose, but I can’t figure out why. It’s not like I parked weird and used too much space.

It was even more of an issue when I drove a Mustang GT. Doors on a 2 door car are long, so I always wanted plenty of space to get in and out. Sometimes I found another car parked so close to me that I had to open my door and turn the car on to roll down the drivers window, and then wedge myself into the car.

Imagine owning a i8.
Two times, I had to roll down the windows with the key fob and climb in my i8, through the window.

The thing that used to annoy the hell out of me when I would go into the office is there were about a dozen "rockstar" spots. Column in the way so one side protected, slightly wider spot because they measured poorly when starting, etc.

And most of them would be full, 75% sh*tboxes and the 25% of nice cars in them would be parked in a way where they were completely wasting the "door ding free" advantage. Like hugging the line while the column is 4 feet away on the other side. And its not like these were prime spots either, youre walking far for zero advantage at that point.

I've had this happen and to me it's totally on purpose. Same as the asses that camp out in the passing lane with a train of cars behind them when they can easily move to the right lane.

What's even more aggravating are other inconsiderate motorcyclists. I parked my bike in a spot and some jerk jammed their motorcycle in the same space almost leaning their POS bike against mine when they could have easily parked in a spot a few spaces down.

Woof, yeah I only do that kind of parking with people i know. I get packing it in as a group to be considerate to everyone else but dont go near a strangers bike. Still nothing compared to the cagers who want to test sit though, Ive thought about putting the alarm back on the MV for that reason.

Same with riding. Ill be solo at a light and some dude will pull right next to me. I dont f'ing know you dude, with your landing gear down, personal space MFer! Id always stay staggered like 6 feet behind in that situation and more than once glad I did as dude weaved because he couldn't get balance until he was going 10+ and even had a couple dudes straight up drop it in front of me.

People value their "right" to do whatever they want more than common courtesy and confrontation avoidance. People now crave letting you know what they think and demonstrating how angry they are at all times. So, I think it is mostly due to general ignorance and loss of consideration, with a small part due to assholes that actually do it on purpose to piss someone else off.

You want to hear something infuriating? I went to valley fair mall here in the bay area during the height of COVID. Barely anyone there and a few stores open. Macy's was and I needed some dress shoes. Drove my F80 all the way up the top of the parking structure to park all by my lonesome. A POS accord with a wing was coming into the parking structures well and decided to follow me. I didn't notice him until I parked and he pulled in to the spot on my left. 500 other empty stalls and the asshat does that. So I started her up to go to a different spot and he starts to do the same. I just went home

Honestly at that point probably a good choice to bail, could have just been a completely moronic criminal or wierdo instead of just some guy being a prick.

If someone parks ignorantly close to me, especially if they're crooked and/or leave their wheels turned, I always just fold their mirror in. Open my door, shoulder against mirror, little push, climb in, and off I go.

Literally had a dude one time open his door into my wifes mirror. I was sitting in the car while she ran into the store. He looked at me, shrugged, and went on his way. I got out, folded BOTH mirrors, and put his wipers up, then moved spots. People are just dumb nowadays.

If you take the time to park far away from other cars, I get why you might be annoyed if someone parks next to you. Maybe they think you are careful with your car so you won't dent yours. Maybe they have a hard on for BMW drivers. Maybe they think their car is less apt to get broken into with a nicer car right next to it.

Personally, I can't be bothered with worrying about it. I park smartly (I think) by choosing large spaces and I park in the middle of them. Cars park next to me all the time and I've been lucky enough to not have any dents in many years.

They either care, don't want you to feel abandoned and would rather you kill them instead of committing a suicide, or just hate feeling lonely.

Is there any etiquette? Don't they just share a urinal? I wouldn't know as I always use a cabin instead, but how would you know? Last time I found a girl in a men's restroom it went like this: "-It's men's! -Have you been to the women's? It smells so awfully there!!! -No I haven't, but I would mind that awful smell here too."

This is easy. They bring a chick and tell her: "That's my car (my next one, I hope)! I'll take you for a ride later."

You came to the wrong thread… you’re worse than the topic being discussed. A true douchebag.
While I wouldn't have said it as harshly as you, I was thinking the same thing when I read this post.

Only if any damage is done. Otherwise inconsiderate parking is worse.

Do you know that or is it just a guess? My non-power folding mirrors fold fine in both directions and the handbook seems to suggest it's the same with power folding. It just should be like that for obvious safety (when you touch something incidentally).

Oh my God, yes!!! The garage I used to park in had designated motorcycle slots that were as deep as a regular slot but maybe 1/3 as wide. Skinny and perfect for a bike. Some asshole in his beat to shit scooter kept seeking me out like a creepy stalker and wedging his busted ass scooter in next to me. It had clearly been dumped at least a dozen times. Mirrors dangling off it, no grips, body panels all tore off. It was a total mess. He wedged me in so badly one time that the only way to get my bike out was to physically move his. I had to call a buddy who was still in the office to come down there and help me pick the thing up and move it. I briefly thought about carrying it down to the alley and throwing it in the dumpster, but decided to be the better guy that day.

The unfortunate thing about those spots was that most cars backed in next to it so in order to help their drivers avoid crawling all over my bike to get in and out, I chose to roll my bike all the way to the back of the spot, thus inviting scooter guy to come share with me.

Power folding mirrors work just like regular mirrors. if you bump them you can feel them kind of "cam off" of something and the resistance goes way down. That is both ways. If you bump them "folded" then its kind of like a garage door release, if you power fold the mirrors it will "catch up" to the position of the mirror and grab it, then it can fold it back. If its flipped forward you have to flip it back until it cams back into the regular position.

I have garage often crammed full, Ive bumped my power mirrors a ton of times and it all still works.

At work, I try to park as far away from the cotton trees as I can. Sometimes, I'll even take two spots

Last week I took two spots and one of the techs. walk up to me and he's like, "who parked that BMW? Typical BMW owner". I didn't say anything
