Paint Chips Galore!

I've had my 2022 Tanzanite Blue M340xi for 5 months and 3,000 miles (70% interstate). It's a stone chip magnet. I've already touched up 10-15 small chips. I'm using Dr. Colorchip. The color match is good, but because there's no clear coat the repairs have a flat, non-glossy finish that makes them more noticeable. The undercoat is a light color, so every chip sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm beginning to wish I'd done PPF, but to do it now would be expensive. I'd have to have the ceramic coat removed, paint correction again, and then re-applied after PPF. Also, some chips have been on the sides, so I'd have to do the entire car.

My next car may be silver or white- then my tired old eyes won't notice most of the chips!

Lol I was in the same boat as you. My previous car was a dark blue and I thought I wouldn't notice paint chips on a white car.

My alpine White is peppered with rock chips that I touched up using Dr. Colorchip. It is just as noticeable. Lol.

PPF is the easiest investment choice in my opinion.

I picked up my car and drove it straight to get PPF'd… full nose. It's original only once.

OK, Boys and Girls- I knew when I posted this thread at we'd get all the PPF, PPF, PPF, PPF nanner, nanner, nanner, and lo, and behold! I know. We all know. When we got our car we'd just put $20K down + $1K for coating. PPF just wasn't in the budget, and to do it now would be even more expensive.

My last car was a silver 2001 Acura CL-S. I was super OCD about that car. It was driven a lot more than my M340xi, and I never noticed paint chips. Maybe the paint was better? I think the silver color just hides them better.

Yup. BMW paint is soft. None of my previous/present cars have as many rock chips as the BMW. It's so bad that I PPF'd my new cars after seeing the front end of my G20. Honestly, best investment I've made but then, I drive 150+ miles every day on the highway.

Not only is the paint soft but I've also noticed that the windshield is soft and gets chips very easily. More than any car I've owned feels like.

Again agree. Only car I think is worse is our Merc. Only 5k miles on it and it has more chips than our BMWs. Audi has the best paint and windshield amongst the cars we own.

I have only owned my BMW X5 for a couple of months and already have paint chips, I have not heard anything hit the vehicle, my prior vehicle was 9 years old and I had 0 paint chips. The paint does not appear to be very thick either, I must admit I am disappointed here.

For this reason alone I will never own another car without PPF. It's not so much about return on investment, which I think is good, but about my OCD. I love the fact that my paint looks literally perfect all the time. Yes, it was $2500 for the PPF, but for me it was 100% worth it.

yeah if you're daily driving a bmw, especially on the highway, you need ppf. preferable bumper, hood, fenders, side skirts, mudlaps.

my 335i got its ppf ate up after a year with all the salt on the road. dont think ppf is one and done. it need upkeep especially if you live in an area with snow, gravel roads, lots of semi trucks.

i sold my f30 335i after that. bought an 8k civic for work. and an f80 m3 for around town. the depreciation kind of works out to be the same.

Thinner windshields to save weight? Fewer layers of clear coat too?

If you drive on the highway a lot, especially close to the cars in front of you, you're going to get a ton of chips. You basically have to PPF the entire car if you want to play it safe. bumper and front half of the hood is really not enough. Side mirrors, front and rear flared fenders and also the roof in front of the sunroof (especially if youre lowered) all collect a ton of chips sadly.... and then you got them acidic bird poop that cooks on your roof or trunk without you even knowing. Better just to keep the car in the garage and uber instead

It's a tough decision (PPF)... I priced it and front to rear, quoted $7k to do the car. I figured respraying later wouldn't be much more. Maybe not a good idea after driving a short while, I realized the paint is way soft, more so than it should be. The lack of enamel most certainly is the culprit as compared to older paints. How we can envy those older cars that had sheet metal so thick rust was afraid, and how that paint would last and last... Lol

I might take her in, get the paint corrected, chips taken care of and film applied, maybe... But it doesn't prevent all damage.

Who here has applied ceramic coating on top of the PPF? What's your thoughts with that? And what film do you prefer or think is best

If anybody in the greater Denver area is looking for PPF work, please see Tristan at Tint My Ride. Super helpful guy and took a lot of time explaining how they perform their work, all the nuanced details of what separates them from PPF competitors, etc. He gave me a helluva deal on a complete-car PPF job, window tint and the installation of my TRE spoiler and black model badging.

Tell him Brandon from Lone Tree with the red M240i sent you.

Oh yeah... when you do a complete-car PPF, you get ceramic coat on your glass and your wheels included.

Why on earth would you spend $1K on a scam coating as opposed to putting that into PPF for the front clip?
