Great thread idea!

I’ve had 2 speeding tickets in Europe on the same trip, 1 in Belgium and 1 in Germany (both were on camera and they mailed my tickets to me in the US) 😒

My biggest penalty was around $500 for speeding in Nebraska (construction zone so double the fine even though it was a Sunday and no construction workers were present) when I was much younger (and far less responsible).

Many years ago while road racing a friend in his new, ultra rare 1LE Camaro in my Toyota MR-2 (in the middle of the night, no cars at all) on a local twisty road a cop had seen us get on the road at the very beginning, but he was so far back that we never even saw his headlights. We stopped to chat for a bit at local spot and a few minutes later the cop showed up. We were given a C&I ticket for "drag racing" because he didn't know what else to put on the ticket. The cost was $1000 with $500 suspended, 10 days in jail suspended. So $500 is the highest ticket I've had. Circa 1991.

Damn! So you got tickets from Waffles land and Germany and got them in US! Was a US car or just rent? How long it took for you to get them?

I'm sure it was down to the notes on the ticket. I just looked it up, 12-30-89. Seems like so long ago. I completed a driver improvement program for it, but still got the 3 points. It was removed from my record March 21, 1990.

And technically his car wasn't a 1LE, it was something he called a "Level 0" Camaro. It was a 5.0 IROC 5-speed that when you checked certain boxes you got all sorts of goodies. What that car would be worth now, wow.

^^ always loved that little Toyota.

From the interweb...

The name MR2 stands for either "mid-ship run-about 2-seater" or "mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-seater". In French-speaking markets, the vehicle was renamed Toyota MR because the abbreviation "MR2" sounds like the profanity "Merde" when spoken in French.
Haven't had a ticket in over 30 years so honestly don't remember. Had some speeding tickets before then so whatever the going rate was.

We had a rental car for a 2 week beer tour of Belgium, Germany and Czech Republic. Great trip! The tickets showed up in my mailbox about a month after returning to Texas. Each had a nice clear picture of me behind the wheel from the CCTV. Sixt Rental gave my address to the police in each country. They weren’t that expensive (maybe $250 total) and I went ahead and paid them by check I didn’t want to face any potential issues when returning to Europe by not paying. Lesson learned…. Don’t speed in Europe if not on the autobahn….Big Brother is watching! 😉

You're lucky that they're not that expensive! Yeah in Europe it's tricky but now everywhere. AutoBahn can also be a pain in the ass and don't hink that you don't get a ticket there!

I got street racing and excessive speeding. It was like 3000$ in fines and I tried to fight in court with a lawyer still lost and that was another ~ 4000$ in lawyer fees. Lost license for 3 months to because of the points incurred.

After this experience I've lost all faith in the justice system and the police. We were not racing and I admitted that yes I was speeding to the police at the time of the event at 140kmh but not excessively (To be considered excessive it is 160kmh on highways) but nope he paced me and claimed I was drivbing 160kmh because he had to do 160kmh to catch up to me... what a dumbass of course you need to driver faster to catch up if I drive 140kmh. Fuck the police. They always think they are right and in court they can never ever lie or have a bad recollection of events.... of course not. What a great system we live in.

I’ve never had a big fine, but in my early days of driving I used to pretty much get a ticket every three years, which worked out okay, because at that time in Texas you could take defensive driving every three years to get a ticket dismissed. Then they changed it to where you could take it every year to get a ticket dismissed and somehow I started getting a ticket pretty much every year. I have taken a lot of defensive driving courses. . Enough that I probably could have taught the course. I always viewed getting a ticket as good for my insurance rates, because of the discount you get for taking defensive driving. But, my last ticket was roughly seven or eight years ago. I was actually driving my E90 330i on the freeway with oversized winter tires so my speedometer was under reporting my speed and instead of going about 10 miles over the limit I was going about 13 miles over the limit. Thanks to defensive driving I don’t think I’ve ever had a ticket actually go onto my record.

This forum doesn’t let me like posts. I’d like the post above about doing enough defensive courses to be an instructor. However I’d be a terrible instructor.

Seems like you should've hired a better lawyer. Using that cop's same 'logic', there's no way you were doing 160 then, because how the heck could he catch up to you if he was doing the same speed?

Anyway, my record is lame compared to most of you guys, just some speeding tickets w one around CAD200? and some demerit pts, an improper turn cuz I couldn't see some midget sign, that's about it; I don't speed anymore, it's a real pita dealing w tickets, insurance, just a stupid hassle. Traffic cops suck, they should hunt reckless/dangerous driving, not ppl who do 10 over and are safe drivers.

Yeah... I do recall my lawyer bringing this up in court indeed. But it's a long story and the reason I lost is that the judge's decision was that my testimony was not true and that I lied and what the police said was true. It's so ironic, I remember speaking with my lawyer before court what would be our best way to proceed and we agreed being honest would be best and lo and behold I'm labelled a liar by the judge. Fuck this man, every time I talk about it just angers me more and more and the fact I can't do anything to change that. Yes I could've appealed but then what, loose another 5k in lawyer to be risked being told by the judge I'm a liar again? The system is such a joke. You have to be rich/wealthy to be able to defend yourself.

It's behind me at least (Although these tickets specifically stay in my file for 10 years to track recidivism, I must limit my future highway speeding top 159kmh for 10 years lmao) got my license back end of July but man every time I think back at it just pisses me off. Like shit like that must happen daily in our society and people are just powerless to it.
