Vancouver recommendations

Heading to Vancouver, BC tomorrow for the weekend on a solo trip. Staying in the West End of Downtown. I have a jet ski tour booked for Saturday morning and will probably head up to the suspension bridge at some point. Other than that, not much else planned. Any recommendations on what else to do? Thanks!

If you have some cheddar, book a heli tour over Grouse mountain, into the back country.
Not sure the weather will hold out for this weekend though.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into it. I was already thinking of heading up to Grouse and purchasing a lift ticket to get up to the top to wonder around. I see that they have zip lining and other stuff up there.

Do you suggest going to the Capilano suspension bridge?

Yeah the Capilano suspension bridge is pretty cool. They also have a tree top walk there, and a cliff walk that goes out over the canyon. There is also a free suspension bridge that is actually higher, up in Lynn valley head waters. It’s the east side of Grouse mountain actually but you need a car to get there. It’s not touristy though, it’s more rustic and locals hiking.

Grouse is cool, has a grizzly bear area , and lots of amenities . There are lots of food options up there. GREAT view of the city at night, if the clouds stay away. Sunday is supposed to be better weather.

Walk part of the seawall in the west end and walk into Stanley park. If you go around the east side of the park, you get a great view of the north shore and the mountains. What part of the west end are you staying in? Do you have a car? There is a hop on hop off bus that goes from downtown through the park I think, and go to the suspension bridge and Grouse. That might be a good route to go.

If you have a car, you could take a drive up the sea to sky highway up to The Squamish gondola and see a different view away from the city. It’s about an hour 15 each way drive. Beautiful drive along the ocean road.

I’m staying at the Listel Hotel. It’s at the corner of Robson and Jervis. It’s on the northern side per the map. No car. Figured I’d take public transit and Uber.

If your in early enough Friday, and feel like it, I would catch transit to the Seabus station and head over to the North shore for the Shipyards Night Market. Live music, beer garden, lots of different food trucks, and great view of the city when the sun goes down and lights go on. It’s right east of the north van seabus station. 5 minute walk.

What ever you do, don’t waste your time and go into gastown. It’s a shit hole now. Cops are dealing with homeless encampment.

Thanks for the North Shore suggestion! I just might do that. I get in around 5pm.

Yeah, I’ve been reading about Gastown and chinatown. I think I’m gonna stay away.

Any pubs or restaurants you recommend on the West End?

Awesome. Northern Edge of west end, close to sky train and seabus. Head west on Robison to Denman and you can enter the Park from there. It’s only a few blocks.

Interesting - I've never travelled solo but have always thought it sounded great. Do you do that a lot?

It’s not my drinking area of town, but there are a couple good pubs down at the bottom of Denman near the water. You can walk west from your hotel to Denman and turn left and walk to the end of the street and there are a bunch of different pubs along the way. Three Brits pub used to be pretty decent, but I haven’t been in a few years.

Or there is a Cactus club right on the water down there. Good views of English Bay, all the way out past University of British Columbia.

There is also Carderos in Coal harbour, just North of you on the water. It’s next to the Bayshore hotel, and has great views of the north shore mountains, and the working harbour. Seaplanes, ships, and cruise ships, depending on timing. That’s pricey real estate area, so there can be some pretty nice cars round there at night also.

Good decision, they are both trashed right now. Too bad because Chinatown was pretty cool. Gastown has always been a cruise ship tourist trap.

First solo trip outside of work. It’s gotten harder to coordinate with people as I’ve gotten older for many different reasons. There’s so much of the world to see so I figured why not. If I keep waiting for people to go with the opportunities might pass me by.

I've done solo trips to Vegas but I didn't think that counted. Honestly, some of the best trips I've ever had.

Oh yeah, I’ve done Vegas solo too. Didn’t count those. Haha.

How was the trip? What was good, what was bad?

The weather held out for you thankfully.

It was great! Got a bike and spent Saturday morning and early afternoon in Stanley Park. Also rode around English Bay and Granville market. Spent a good amount of time strolling around downtown. I got brave on Sunday night and went into Gastown and had a few drinks at Metropole and Greta. Two very different places. Haha.

Didn’t do everything I wanted to though. I had to cancel the jet ski tour I booked because a lingering back injury coincidentally flared up and didn’t want to risk further aggravating it. Also couldn’t do Grouse because of it.

Overall I enjoyed the trip. I plan to go back to do the things I didn’t get to. It’s fairly cheap to get out there.

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions! Maybe I could buy you a beer next time I’m out.
