Dilemma: what would you do?

Recently on a trip in Mexico, we took the family on a snorkeling boat cruise thing. We booked it through the concierge desk at the hotel and provided a credit card. Long story short it's been 3 weeks since the cruise and the charge has not showed up on my credit card. Meanwhile the other family members who went with us and paid separately did have their credit card charged. I'm thinking they made an error in taking down my CC number (it was a form where they handwrote down all my info) and I assume they have no way to reach me.

Do I call the hotel and tell them I wasn't charged and attempt to pay, or do I just forget about it since it was their error? I'm a big believer in karma and feels like bad luck will come my way if I don't try to pay it. The charge was for $800 so a decent chunk of change.

Call and tell the concierge that the transaction hasn't gone through yet. If they seem concerned - go from there.

I agree -- call the hotel and let them know there apparently was an error.

My first thought: why are you asking when it's clear that you already know what to do?

Make it right; pay the bill.

This should not have been an issue.

Because I was hoping a bunch of folks would chime in and say screw them and don't pay since they screwed up and then I wouldn't feel so bad about saving 800 bucks.

Your original question never should've reached this forum.

I assume the snorkeling boat is a mom and pop type operation. I would pay the bill.

If this was some corporate thing or large company I wouldn’t call

Ok, my post doesn't read as I intended it. Blame it on lack of sleep and late nights remodeling my garage this week. I have asked some neighbors and friends what they would do and most of them said just forget about it. I was assuming a similar sentiment from the forums here.

No, we pay our bills. Period. Even when we don't think we should or we think we can get out of doing so.

I learned this basic fact of ethics at a Fortune 125 company in the early 1970s. We'd contracted with an outfit on a critical project, and it turned out they couldn't meet the terms of the contract. It was clear they'd overstated their technology and their capacity to bring it up to speed in time to bring the project in on time. They weren't bad people; they'd just bet badly, failed, and in public.

My boss told the CEO why we were done with them, and that we shouldn't pay them after they hadn't come close to meeting the terms of the contract. The CEO, head of a company with over 100 years doing business in that city, said "No. We pay our bills unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise. In this case, there isn't. If we're asked, we simply will not recommend them." IOW, it's over, and we move on. Pay your bill.

This has happened twice to me, although the amounts were nowhere near the OP’s.

First time was back in 2006, ordered pizza in Orlando (big mistake), had it delivered to our hotel and paid over the phone. Charge never showed up on our end but the driver did get a $10 cash tip on a $40 order. The food was so bad we didn’t even finish the food and had to get fast food. If the food was decent I would have called them back to make it right.

Next, happened recently on a $26 order for gyros/fries. Handed the clerk my debit card at drive thru, receipt handed and going over my account a few days later, no charge from that establishment. Went in person inside and explained but they denied payment, saying it went through. But still after 6 weeks, no charge.

I tried, right?

It's not your monkey, and it's not your circus. If the business failed to bill your credit card it's not your problem. It's not like you stiffed them or never provided the billing information.

Should not matter if it was a mom/pop operation or a mega corporate giant. You received a service in expectation for payment. WTF has happened to personal integrity in this world. Pay your damn bill.

I got you all beat... I turned in a 2018 Audi A5 with about $3000 (5 months) of lease payments remaining on a Genesis. The agreement was they would settle the lease with Audi -- and they did. But they also wrote me a check for the same amount.

I brought it to their attention twice and they insisted there was nothing wrong with the settlement.

So if you bought a TV from Amazon and it showed up and they never charged your card you would call Amazon and tell them to charge it?
