Possible good news for Illinois drivers

If this bill passes, no more front license plate requirement. Hopefully it will apply to all vehicles and not just "newly registered" ones.

A front plate is required here in California but many people don't have them. The LEOs seem very relaxed about it. You would probably only get cited for it if you were pulled over for something else and were being a dick to the cop or if you were being ticketed for a non moving violation and they just wanted to add that on.

This requirement was dropped here in Ohio as of July 1, 2020. I took my plate off that same day.

I hope Illinois does the same for you and others who would like to take their front plates off.

I dislike, but understand the need. I can recount several situation where the LPR systems picked up a plate leaving a scene as the officer was driving in. Later research lead to the arrest of a suspect. Without that front plate, there would be no evidence tying suspect to the scene of the crime.

There are significant numbers of stolen vehicles recovered as a result of LPR picking up a front plate, and later the rear plate since it went hot. Having two shots helps confirm the read, and help get vehicles back to their rightful owners.

Oh, wait, this isn't he UNPOPULAR thread, is it

Would be interesting to see the recovery rate in states with and without front plates. But personally I prefer to be surveilled only after I’m suspected of committing a crime. So I’m fine if all the face recognition and plate reading cameras disappear.

I haven't run a front plate on either of my cars for many years. It seems outside of Chicago proper, the cops don't really care. And within the city limits they won't stop you (at least, I haven't been stopped yet)... as for parking downtown, I always make sure to park in a garage. The only time it's been an issue for me was parking on the street downtown, learned my lesson the hard way.

I'm at least semi-anal about that, so I had a Carbonio no-drill front license plate mounting system installed right off the bat. More here: https://carbonio.com/products/bmw-2-...sports-package.

The product was solid for me, including at 135+ on the track. It was on for 23 months and was still tight when it was removed.

Every car should have both front and rear license plates. I have them on my car in Arizona in the front and they’re not even required

Mind elaborating?

Do you feel the same should be true for all on road vehicles?

Hypothetically, I've always kept my front plate in the garage so I could use it as a spare when the rear plate inevitably wears and rusts prematurely.

I've had that happen a few times and it's saved me a trip to the DMV or fumbling on the state DoT site. Hypothetically, of course.

Maybe I can get my money back for a "improperly displayed" ticket for leaving it on the dash while waiting to install the plate bracket during dead of winter.

That's what I do too. And I parked my car at the short term parking lot it O'Hare and got a ticket. So stupid. Still running without it though. And I wish I could do something about the holes but yeah.

You can buy color matched plugs for the bumper.
Haven’t used a front plate in CA for 13 years.

Where in o'hare did you park? I just got back from a weeklong trip and parked in o'hare as well, but made sure the front of my car was as close to the wall as possible so nobody would even care to check if I had a front plate or not.

Rookie....

I've been sans front plate for over 20 years! I did get a no-front-plate ticket in Nebraska, though. I guess I was the "out of state ticket" for the day.
