Rusty discs

Every time I wash the car, the wheels are completely spotless. But after driving for about ten minutes, all the rust that was on the discs has now transferred onto the wheels, making them look dirty, instantly.

What am I doing wrong/ how to resolve???

You're not doing anything wrong, and it's perfectly normal. The rust is coming from inside the vanes, and even if you paint them it'll come back over time. It's part of the reason people get CCB's. Ask me how I know...

heres my solution. its not perfect but its better than nothing.

when im done washing the car, i do a lap around the block to get all the rust off the rotors. i pull back in the driveway and pressure wash the wheels again to rinse off all the oxidation thats now all over the calipers, wheel drums, and rotors. during this process, the water coming off the bakes and wheels runs a very nasty reddish/swampy color.

IMMEDIATELY after this, i take my leaf blower to each wheel and brake assembly to get each as dry as i can ASAP. Time is critical here as the longer the water sits the more rust will form.

Like i said, its not perfect, but its better than nothing. Theres still a bit of rust dust that comes off on the next drive but its way way better than doing nothing at all.

Hope this helps! I'd love to hear about others' solutions.

They make a product called Hydes Rustopper that you spray on the rotors to prevent flash rust but I've never tried it. I wash my wheels last and dry with a leaf blower to minimize rust, then take a short drive and use the brakes to remove what little remains and then wipe my wheels down with a towel.

There's Bilt Hamber "Atom-mac" that you spray on.

You could also ceramic coat the wheels so the dust doesn't stick as much.

After washing car a drive round the block expels the disc water and I don't get rust water stains on the 343M wheels.

This is my major car cleaning OCD pain point as well and there seems to be no real way to completely resolve. Even if you use a rust inhibitor product some rust will always form and be transferred back onto your clean wheels. My method is as follows:
1) Wash and dry car and wheels. Allow rotor rust to completely dry
2) Drive car 1-2 miles with repeated braking/stops to knock off rotor rust
3) Once home hit the wheels with electric leaf blower
4) Clean wheels with spray detailer. Wheels faces first and then the barrels. In my case I use Griots Garage Ceramic Speed Shine

As mentioned above, Bilthamber Atom Mac will sort you out.

Add a diluted spray on the discs before they dry, after washing, and it’ll sort it. I’ve used it on every wash and never had an issue.

I've used both Hydes Rustopper and DryCoat Rust Preventative to spray on the wet rotors after washing the car. They help a bit, it's not perfect since you only spray the outside of the rotors. (Note: I have not tried Bilthamber Atom Mac, but I would think any spray would have the same limitation). It definitely cuts down on the orange dust that is transferred to the black finish of wheels.

Personally, I hate the idea of driving 1-2 miles, especially when the roads are crap in winter time or the air is filled with pollen, road is dusty, etc. I typically wash/dry and move the car back into the garage. If the roads are pristine and clean, I think that is the best full proof method.

Since I don't drive my car often, I usually use the spray and park my car. After the first drive I go over the wheels again with a dry microfiber.

Washed the car just now, and used the Atom Mac. The discs are still rusty, maybe not as much as usual. Will see how it fares when I drive it tomorrow.

Considering that you had a bottle sitting in the garage for unspecified period of time, in unspecified conditions, might mean that it's past its shelf life and might no longer be effective.

If your results differ widely from those around the internet, and application is not the issue, then chemicals might have lost their viability.

No, I'd only had it a few weeks, but have bought so many cleaning products lately, I didn't remember I had it!

At first, they were rust free, but as I rinsed the car a second then third time, they rusted up, so maybe you need to keep applying it several times while washing the car?

Thank you for specifying that.

As far as I understand, you should not spray down the product after you apply it. Maybe you can find a workflow that suits you where you dont need to rinse the discs after you apply the rust inhibitor.

good thread, i once washed my ride and went on vacation, it sat in my garage for 2 weeks and the pads were stuck/rusted to the rotors, took some gas to break it loose.

One thing that drives me absolutely nuts is the the rust rim between the bell and the brake surface on the rotor.

I pulled all four rotors yesterday and went to work. I honestly can't figure out why Brembo sells rotors with an untreated surface that WILL rust and make it look like cr*p.
