All-New iDrive Coming to Neue Klasse

* see the separate press release for the world premiere of the BMW Neue Klasse here:

All-new BMW iDrive coming to the Neue Klasse.
  • The new display and operating system will be available in the Neue Klasse from 2025.
  • BMW Panoramic Vision enhancing BMW driver orientation.
  • User experience for all passengers.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 2, 2023… With the new BMW iDrive, BMW is bringing a display and operating concept to the next vehicle generation which enables a completely new intuitive interaction paradigm between the driver and vehicle. The next development leap will follow in the Neue Klasse from 2025. The future generation of BMW iDrive will transform the vehicle into a digital experience space. With BMW Panoramic Vision, a new multifunction steering wheel, the new central display and a new BMW 3D head-up display as central display and operating elements, the quintessential BMW user experience is being reinterpreted in all Neue Klasse models.

Logical progression of BMW iDrive with new technologies.

The next technological leap enables a modern, characteristically BMW interior design with a focus on touch and advanced voice interaction.

BMW iDrive in the Neue Klasse is characterised by four central elements.

BMW Panoramic Vision is based on a completely new head-up display technology. It projects information at a height perfectly matched to the driver across the entire width of the windscreen.

BMW Panoramic Vision is complemented by the new BMW 3D Head-Up Display for active driving situations, which displays the required information, such as assisted driving or traffic guidance, with high precision as 3D animations in the driver’s line of sight.

With the new multifunction steering wheel, the display contents of BMW Panoramic Vision and the BMW 3D head-up display can be individually controlled according to the principle eyes on the road, hands on the wheel. Operation is convenient and precise via the steering wheel buttons, and is enhanced by the active haptic feedback and multilayer technology.

BMW iDrive in the Neue Klasse focuses on the new central display with characteristically BMW styling and intuitive touch function. The matrix backlight technology of the new central display ensures a high resolution for the displays, vibrant colours and strong contrast, regardless of the specific light conditions.

The future BMW iDrive will continue to feature the QuickSelect concept introduced in 2023. The system in the Neue Klasse is based on a highly integrated software architecture and uses the next generation of the BMW Operating System. The vehicle’s smart connectivity with the BMW Cloud as well as the customer’s digital ecosystem creates an immersive user experience and brings a new dimension to the human-car interaction. It transforms the vehicles of the Neue Klasse into digital experience spaces.

Lincoln Nautilus is doing a cruder version of this approach. Down to the square steering wheel so you can see over it. We’ll see how it works, but I’m concerned for light levels at night.

I’m intrigued at how this will work in real world scenarios and how impactful or distracting it would be while driving.

All car interiors are starting to look like Tesla's. Very minimalistic dash with one big screen in the middle.

I agree.

Well, aside from the giant car-width display below the windscreen.

It seems that the Demolition Man screenwriters predicted this in 1993

I was there for an early preview and the windscreen glass from the inside actually falls slightly under the front bonnet (that darkened portion) , and allows the projection display to work very well. It also allows the dash to be positioned lower and gives the interior a much more spacious "feel".

The lower side windows also add to the "illusion" that the windscreen is actually lower than it is.

Thanks for that. Now I’m really interested in seeing this in practice. Sounds like it may be fairly well implemented.

It's very impressive. And imo a much better idea than slapping giant screens all over the dashboard like Mercedes.

That’s the part that is literally perplexing: touch only controls times thousands of drivers equals more hazardous driving conditions.

I was wondering when the full windscreen heads up display would become the norm…it’s not as large (high up on the glass) as imagined yet it seems more practical than first thought.

Panoramic view seems interesting, and the next logical evolution of the heads up display. Could be ok.

I believe this is a step in the right direction.
If anyone gets distracted by their Interior — touch screen or analog — perhaps public transportation should be in order.
The tech exists to disable apps during motion — can’t tell you how many people I see faces planted in phones while doing 80+ down the freeway.

That said — I will acknowledge that more opportunities for distraction exist with this interior. Like minded drivers like myself usually set a playlist, start music, begin navigation, set climate, set driving style and turn the phone facedown all before placing the vehicle in drive.
When a text comes in I can respond with voice. When a call comes in — I can answer it hands free — all while not taking my eyes off the road — my primary focus. Scrolling through any apps at a red light isn’t a thing. Changing navigation destinations on the fly can be done via voice.

I don’t know how intuitive this system will be — but I will not be flicking things to the windshield while driving. I appreciate the HUD — but messing with it while driving doesn’t seem like the thing to do.

I feel like this is one piece of the puzzle. Combine this with a self aware vehicle that can interface with other vehicles and I can see some real magic start happening.

It's because it's significantly cheaper to make a car this way. A single, high quality touchscreen costs massively less than a conventional dash design. Elon was just the first one to show you can get away with it.
