I'm trying to install the ctek battery charger eyelet cords and was wondering when removing the terminals under the hood do I need to remove them in a certain order or do I need to disconnect the battery before doing so? I'm hoping not to have to disconnect battery and just unscrew the negative post first then the positive post and connect in reverse order.

why would the order matter? Aren't they an open lead until you plug them into the ctek?

I don't know if the order matters but I figured disconnecting/connecting the same order as you would the battery couldn't hurt.

Those photos don't seem to be connecting to the terminals under the hood like the original question was intended. I've read multiple places not to hook straight to the battery and my owners manual states specifically to charge and/or jump from the terminals under the hood. Connecting directly to the battery bypasses the ibs and can potentially cause issues.

Looking at your image, you are not connected correctly. (??) You do not have the IBS in the charging circuit.

Front connections, we are charging as intended, keeping the energy management in the loop, allows for correct charging in use.

You don't need to remove either cable. Just the nut, place eye ring connector on post and reinstall the nut.

In my previous vehicles I’ve always hooked it up directly to the Battery and still doing it to this day without any issues.

The connector cable-kit came with my CTEK to connect it directly to the battery with 2 O-rings for the + and - poles of the battery .
Within 5 sec. and one connector click , my CTEK is ready to charge ..
My CTEK connector kit is permanently connected to my battery .Got 'Zero issues like this in the last 10 years , CTEK is the smart battery tender

Yes , I leave my CTEK connector connected to my battery at all times (permanently)! in the trunk.
That's how I charge my battery in the last 10 years .

Think , you don't need the IBS . Because CTEK is the smart battery tender .

You may not need the IBS to charge the battery. But that leaves the energy management not knowing the current SoC. In circuit, it does.

Charging and trickle charging of the battery

...If the battery is charged when fitted, the charging process must take place via the jump start terminal point. This is the only way to ensure that the charging process is detected correctly by the vehicle electronics on vehicles with an intelligent battery sensor (IBS). If the battery is charged directly at the battery terminals, misinterpretations of the battery condition and, under certain circumstances, unwanted Check Control messages or fault code memory entries can occur. The cigarette lighter is supplied with voltage by the front power distribution box via switched terminal 30B. After terminal 30B off, the relay de-energizes. This means that a trickle charger connected at the cigarette lighter would be disconnected from the battery. Only charge the battery via the jump start terminal point.

This. By not having the IBS in the charging circuit, you may as well not have it all. If the IBS doesn't 'see' the charge from the ctek, it'll assume the battery is still in whatever state it was before you charged it and try and cram some more in when you next run the car.

To be clear, you don't *have* to connect to the charging posts under the bonnet/hood, but it's a simple way to be sure that the IBS is in the charging circuit.

In response to the original question, it shouldn't matter at all which you disconnect first, and you shouldn't need to disconnect the battery beforehand - just make sure any loose positive wires can't short out on the body/block/etc.

I ran the cable out to under the hood/windshield and don't have to pop the hood/trunk to connect the Charger.

FYI: Info from BMW (as others mentioned above) to not hook up directly to the battery if your BMW has an IBS (intelligent battery sensor)…because there are multiple components that communicate with each other in regard to the vehicle’s charging system.

But everyone has the right to do with their vehicle as they wish…but to those that didn’t know…BMW does not recommend bypassing the IBS.
