I saw this and posted it in the Z4 forum. Probably should have posted here as well.
I have a 15 Pro Max and have been using my charger without issue for the last week. Will probably hold off on using it for a bit out of caution now to see if BMW or Apple say anything or release an update to address. |

Have had two Google Pixel phones regularly in my M850 charger with no issues!
Wireless charging is inherently less efficient, so any thermal issues get pushed to the edge! |

I had this happen to me on Saturday. Put the phone on the charger for about an hour in my G82 M4. Took off and came on the house and got the Apple Pay cannot be used message.
Rang apple who confirmed the hardware fault with the Apple Pay chip which i assume is the same as the nfc. No way to fix, you need a new device. My phone is a 15 pro max and was only a week old. If you get the message the support article will ask you to restore the iOS image on the phone. I did this and it doesn’t work. So if you get this message ring apple and ask them to run the diagnostic tool on the phone and this will confirm if the hardware has failed

I haven't seen any issues yet on our end but def seems to be a thing on here, didn't something similar (overheating maybe?) happen on the last gen iPhone as well with some on here using wireless charging?

The difference is that this is the first time that BMW’s wireless charger has reportedly been “killing” the actual NFC chip inside the iPhone 15. Thus, Apple Pay and CarKey no longer work, even after a full reset. The only fix is a replacement iPhone. I’m still using my iPhone 14 Pro Max and Google Pixel 6 Pro with 2 BMWs with wireless charging and NFC works fine despite both occasionally displaying a “charging paused” message due to overheating. Not sure what changed internally on the 15 to cause NFC to actually die when it overheats as both Apple and BMW haven’t responded to comment yet.

Can cooL a $2 can of coke
Will cooK a $2000 mobile phone. Not surprised as all. With a 4 day old X5 M60i after two days I've stopped using the wireless charger for a Samsung S23 Cooked 🔥 🚒 my phone shut down, crashed ID8.5 and too hot to handle, even though can cool a drink centimetres away in the heated/chilled cup holders. A big fail. A fan? A duct? A heat exchanger? Surely something... |

Thanks for posting. This is insane. I’m only using wired chargers in our cars now.
I’ve heard that apple will replace the phone under warranty - or perhaps apple care is required - can anyone confirm? For those whose phone failed, were you also using apple CarPlay and/or hotspot or was the phone just overheated and damaged from charging alone? BMW should provide a cooling solution for the charger in the future, as this is a continuous problem. Honestly the chargers are fairly ineffective anyway. In the X7 we have cooled cupholders so theoretically they could do something similar. But ultimately Apple made a mistake here with thermal management. I heard there’s also a SW update that will throttle things back to reduce overheating. Haven’t seen it yet. |

Probably a blessing that my ‘22 G83 lacks wireless charging due to the COVID part shortage, but still have to deal with wireless charging on my ‘21 F95.
Apple is apparently working on a software update to address the overheating issue as there is a bug in iOS17. 9to5Mac is jumping onto the MacRumors story.

Apple specifically stated in the press release that the bug fixes to address heat issues would NOT involve throttling or impact performance.

Apple replaced mine under the Apple care program, if I didn’t have that i believe they still would have replaced it as their diagnostic tool said that the hardware module had failed. However it won’t take long for Apple to put the connection with bmw chargers together, and at that point it will depend on who is blaming who for the issue. If you have Apple care it won’t matter as they are very good at covering accidental damage etc, just having the warranty might be another story I was using the charger and apple car play
