G90 M5 Start of Production!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Dingolfing. A few days ago, BMW M GmbH unveiled the new BMW M5 (Energy consumption, weighted, combined: 1,7 – 1,6 l/100 km [166.2 – 176.6 mpg imp] and 25,5 – 25,0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10,3 – 10,2 l/100 km [27.4 – 27.7 mpg imp] according to WLTP; CO2 classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery G) and released the first official pictures. Today, the new high-performance sedan celebrated its official start of production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The seventh-generation BMW M5 is the first to come off the assembly line with an electrified drive train: The model-specific M HYBRID system combines a V8 engine with an e-drive to deliver a system output of 727 hp, enabling it to sprint from 0 to 100 in just 3.5 seconds. The vehicle’s high-voltage battery, with an available energy content of 18.6 kWh, offers an electric range of 67 to up to 69 kilometres (WLTP) that is unique among its competitors.

“We are proud to be building the latest generation of the iconic M5 here in Dingolfing,” says Plant Director Christoph Schröder. The site already delivered the pre-assembled bodies for the very first BMW M5 models, back in the 1980s, which were then completed by hand at M GmbH in Garching. Since the second generation – or, to be more exact, 1988 – the high-performance sports car has been built entirely at the plant in Lower Bavaria.

Central components for the new BMW M5 are also produced on site or supplied by nearby component plants. Schröder refers to this as an “under on roof production approach”. For example, the chassis of the BMW M5, specially tailored to the model, comes from Dingolfing component plant 02.10, while the high-voltage battery is assembled next door at plant 02.20, the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production. The carbon-fibre roof is supplied by the plant in Landshut, located 30 kilometres away.

A unique aspect of production at the vehicle plant is the modifications already made in the body shop. Based on the BMW 5 Series standard production body, the BMW M5 features additional measures to stiffen the body structure and a specially widened body with flared wheel arches, thus also enabling the integration of the M-specific rear axle.

In the paint shop, customers can choose between ten standard and 150 special-request finishes for their new BMW M5.

The new BMW M5, like its predecessor, is assembled alongside other BMW 5 Series, BMW 4 Series and BMW M4 models on the same production line, where it is completed with specific equipment options, such as the CFRP rear spoiler, M steering wheel and M multifunction seats.

Over the coming weeks, production at the plant will gradually ramp up to several dozen BMW M5 vehicles per day. The European market launch of the new model is scheduled to get underway from 2 November 2024. By then, another new model will already be celebrating its premiere at Plant Dingolfing: the new BMW M5 Touring, which expands the BMW M GmbH offering and completes the new BMW 5 Series range.

Let’s see if the sales numbers match the amount of hate this thing has received. I anticipate a 4-Series/M4 situation where this thing will fly off shelves.

It’s kinda the standard situation at every car BMW releases these days.

Greater the hate, greater the sales.

If the current design queues didn't prove this out (M3/4, iX, M2...), nothing will.

For me, I love the look of this car. While the weight worries me, I don't track my cars; an advanced and great suspension set up to mask the weight is plenty good for me.

Thing is this is more than just a styling issue. Oh look at that huge grill. Or the buck teeth. Etc etc. This is a radical departure from what any m5 has ever been. The have radically changed the car all around and generally speaking not for the better is the consensus. Go read Reddit also you’ll see. Since when does a car like this come out with less performance than its predecessor ever? In every metric? Answer is never. Plus understand something. These cars aren’t camrys. This is a total extra. An extravagance if you will. And as for me I’d I don’t love it and it doesn’t tickle my fancy I won’t spend that kind of money on it. Period the end. I suspect alot of people feel as I do. I’m sure it will still sell ok. But the real M fans won’t be diving head first into this imo. This won’t be as bad as the xm but I don’t think it will sell like f90 did imo.

All the while this is absolutely true, the M5 will just get a new target group of buyers. All the purists who hate on the car will not buy it (or most of them anyway), but there will be new ppl who will like the car. It will be a success, hate or not.

Personally I love it. Finally we have a M5 that actually has presence with the wide body, something that the previous gen cars lacked.
Yes it’s a different direction M are heading with the weight/hybrid drive platform but this was always going to happen. I doubt given the choice M would choose this set-up but it’s forced on them, sooner rather than later is what’s happened here imo.
I can’t wait to see it on the road, the m2/3/4 initially looked terrible for me (on camera) but then you see it and that changes.
Recently I spotted a black i7 m70 in town, until I seen it I wasn’t impressed but in black out in the wild that car just makes total sense. For me I’m 100% sure the same will apply for the M5, and it’s the first release in a while I’ve liked from photos alone.

Big fan of this car, I love the fact that BMW ditched the fender grills and made this M5 more of an understated wolf in sheep's clothing car that the M5 should be. Looks like a winner to me, congrats to everyone here that's on the order list.

The purists will eventually run out of options, as electrification is here to stay. That being said, this may not be the best implementation of it.

The G90 M5 will sell.

But not for the reason most people think.

One would assume the G90 will sell because people like it, but I don't think that this will be the case so much. It think the G90 will sell well because of "lack of options." Kind of like the beautiful country girl who rates a 10 who grew up in a small country town, didn't want to leave, and ended marrying an Average Joe, why? Because of lack of options.

Let's analyze the XM for a minute. We all know that the sales of the XM have been a abysmal, but you have to look at the market in which it competes. In that same segment you have the, the Lamborghini Urus, the Audi Q8RS, the Porsche Cayenne GT or even really a Cayenne Coupe S is still close on price the XM, the Mercedes G-Wagen, the Land Rover Defender, the Aston Martin DBX, and more. That market segment is cluttered with extremely tough competition, and all of the alternatives to the XM are really really good! It's not that the BMW XM is a terrible choice, but it doesn't really offer much of an incentive over the competition unless you just really really like BMW and want the badge.

Now lets look at the direct competition for the G90 M5 in 2025 and going forward from that year. We will have in 2025 the:

- Mercedes E63S: This car will also be a PHEV and with a 6cyl engine instead of a V8 like the M5. We don't have many details yet.

- Mercedes AMG GT63S and E-Performance: These cars still have the V8. The GT63S already does a claimed 0-60 in 2.6s, meanwhile the E Performance will come with 831hp and 1082lb/ft of torque. I don't know how much the E Performance will weigh, but as a PHEV it will only get a 7 mile all electric range based on the WLTP cycle. But the price of these cars are far above the price of a G90 M5.

- Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing: Don't know how much longer this car will be in production, but not too much longer. However, it's a Cadillac, and it's getting dated, and it's a Cadillac. Not too many people who would buy a BMW or a Mercedes will be cross-shopping for a Cadillac.

- Audi RS6/RS7: These cars are also getting dated and won't be in production much longer. I don't know what Audi has planned after the RS6/RS7 but they are already upping their game on the new GTRS BEV side of things.

- Porsche Panamera Turbo/Turbo S and E-Hybrid: While the updated Panamera got some very good updates for its refresh, the price of these things are not even comparable to a G90 M5. They will still be in production for a few years, and these cars still come equipped with a V8.

So that's pretty much it. In a few years the Cadillac will be out of production and so will the Audi's. Leaving not much else.

At its price point, to buy a brand new Sports Sedan that comes with a V8 for at least the next 7 years, means that the G90 M5 will sell plenty of cars. The G90 M5 will clearly be a bargain and will be one of the last of its kind in automotive history. I don't think people will necessarily buy the G90 M5 because they actually WANT a car that weighs 5,390lbs, but they will buy it because, what choice do they have.

Also considering where we are historically in the realm of economics today, we have more millionaires on the planet today than ever before in history. We also have many more people in the world, especially in the United States, that have a net worth exceeding $500,000. This combined with the fact that the G90 M5 is hybrid, meaning that you can still put gas in it and fill the tank in 5 minutes, means that there are a lot more people today who can actually afford a car at the G90 M5's price point and still have the convenience to be able to drive it without being tethered to either home charging or fast charging from public infrastructure. It's about convenience. The G90 M5 still offers that convenience. M Division still wants people to be able to fill the tank and take the car on the racetrack and have fun, over and over again. Plus all of the other benefits you get from the hybrid drive train, cheaper cost in Europe, complying with EU7 and EPA, etc...

So there you have it. The G90 M5 will indeed "fly off the shelves" as so many have eloquently put it. Despite the weight gain, M Division's decision to make the G90 PHEV, means that it is the right car at the right time. Consumers and car enthusiasts are not yet ready to go full EV yet. I'd say give it another 7-10 years and we will be having a different conversation.

NGL, the design of the new M5 is hard on the eyes in the front.

It gives me the beaver grill of the current M3/M4.

BMW fans knew it came from previous generations so it was acceptable and I must admit it grew on me to the point I was in love with it due it’s original design history. Also, it was a immediate give away it’s a FULL M.

Now with the new M5 front design the recessed headlights and bulging front is not a design we are use to seeing from the linage of the 5 series.

Can I be informed on the design language since the CEO came into BMW as being different?

Is it the influence of AUDI being put onto the BMW?

How long is he allowed to be CEO?

I am half heartedly want a change at the top.

Nice to see a modern M car with an appropriate ride height from factory, gives it a nice stance.

Right, it's the first implementation of it. Seldomly has this been the best.
There will be a hybrid M3 around 2027, which will get the same drivetrain, but S58 instead of S68. They can learn from the M5 until then.

The wheel gap is huge, but it doesn't seem that way because the wheels (and the car) are that big. You get your 5-6cm in between in the front.
