Good review but needs to be played at 1.25x speed

The reasons to go for the M5 touring imho:
1) less expensive by $20k, possibly more if there are emissions taxes where you live
2) EV only mode in traffic a bit more relaxing, smooth, save some fuel
3) complexity of the settings means you’ll never be bored fiddling around
4) bragging about the 700HP

Reasons to go RS6 Avant:
1) simplicity
2) better feel including thin steering wheel
3) alcantara everywhere
4) much lighter and the wheels are forged and less unsprung mass- car feels very agile
5) appearance - subjective but majority would say the Audi looks better
6) air suspension - very comfortable ride

Both cars represent the apex of engineering. Either one would make any driver enjoy the morning commute or a weekend trip.

The ideal, no budget scenario: get both.

This is an example one reason I believe BMW USA chose to offer the M5 Touring instead of seeing M3 Touring vs RS6 Avant comparisons.

M3 touring doesn't make much sense to the US market because of the small size. The back seat is not comfortable except for small children, and the trunk is not big enough for the family dog unless it's a Yorkie. My German shepherd would bite me if I made her ride in the back of an M3.

I must’ve done something wrong when I had an E91 as my family car. Somehow it fit 5 people comfortably, I (6’2”) fitted well behind my drivers seat set for my driving position, and all my family luggage fitted really well.

I drove from London to Slovenia with 4 adult friends for music festivals and all.

The idea that the current 3 series (the size of an E39) is too small is just ridiculous.

I know, yet many people think that BMW is the only German car company with a whale like future. Just wait til the new e63s amg hybrid e performance (or whatever Mercedes will name it) comes out.

If new E63amg (if it’ll ever come back on the market ) is 100lbs more will it make M5 better car or make any difference?

Won’t make it a better car same with the new rs6/rs7 when they come out, but singling out the M5 cease. What will make the M5 better will be down to the head to head tests.

I think these are both super sick machines & a great testament to what stellar engineering can build. Simply wish they would've compared the M5 CS to the RS6. In terms of overall static weight & strictly ICE platforms, that would've been a much more fair comparison. Although the M5 is pretty damn heavy, it's pretty remarkable what the M division has done with it. Simply wish the power to weight ratio didn't have to suffer from the F90 to the G90.

Bmw maybe able to counter the weight later down in the lifestyle with newer batteries as it's a plug and play part along with the ZF. If battery capacity improves by 30% in gen 6 batteries they maybe able to cut weight on the battery by 30% by a smaller pack and keep the same range .

Hybrid side 882 pounds...that's could be 265lbs cut

The trunk space of the G99 is 17.7 cu ft, and the G80 Touring is 17.6 cu ft, or both about 500L. Similar with the seats folded down.

Maybe you haven’t been in one recently, but the G8x cars are freaking huge. I had plenty of room for road trips with my wife, two kids in car seats, and our 20lb dog in my F80 even…

Also, the G99 trunk space is only 1.2 cu ft larger than the G90 fwiw. It doesn’t really offer much more load space vs the M3 touring or even it’s sedan counterpart.

There are 8 year/100,000 mile warranties on the batteries (in the US) so that isn't a concern for quite some time.

Not sure what part of an M3 qualifies as "small" ... I never had problem carrying german shepherd nor adults in the back
