New G90 is way better than F90 comp! 💯

Two days in driving the new g90 m5, my verdict is: Its a million times better than an f90! Here you go, I said it first. F90 was a great car for its era, but this car is basically an equivalent to getting a new iPhone, bmw has delivered something better that justifies upgrading from f90 to this if you can afford it. Once you drive it around for a day or two, it will become apparent. It’s a real M car!

We all heard the analyst reviews and suspected they were positively biased and then read all these negative comments on this forum and did a 1-1 = 0; including myself on a few occasions. I admit I was wrong and most of the reviewers were spot on and it was not a positive bias, this is an amazing machine!

Here are my reasons:

1. The weight issue is simply not there except on paper, it drives lighter and nimbler than the previous gen. Took me exactly 60 seconds to figure that out.

2. Power delivery of this m5 is unreal, it moves like a beast when you need it to. No need to redline, turn your acs off, roll the windows up and set the launch control 😆

3. It brakes better too, sorry weight watchers! It stops on a dime.

4. Exterior design is gorgeous in real life and a major head turner, does not look porky, in fact everything has gotten bigger, even the new 911 is huge. And the design of this m5 reminds me of how the e39 looked when it came out compared its competitors back then. It was scary looking stance and that’s what this exactly is. Glad we didn’t get the acquire a beaver grille from m3 or strange rectangle m2 grille. M5 front and rear is perfection. Rear is to each their own thing, I like it and I’m sure many do.

Only cons are:

1)leather not luxurious enough, but they will be launching full leather soon

2) b&w is not the diamond spec, well I didn’t notice any difference or a downgrade from my f90 comp with b&w

3) price, well it’s an expensive car and not everyone can afford new one; but a year old pre owned one will make $100k g80 purchase a head scratcher

Good news! Thanks for thr review.

I have been disappointed to learn that the B&W system is not diamond.

You highlight this are being a drawback but then allude to it being on par with a B&W system in your F90 which one might assume to be Diamond?

So, can you provide more clarity on what you’re comparing it to and how it stacks up?

I can’t tell a difference in audio quality. I’m guessing newer technology in a non diamond is same as older diamond.

The F90 B&W wasn't all that great so it's hard to believe it could get a whole lot worse.

Its funny I have a G30 with the top spec HK (800w one) and the M5 with the B&W. Oddly enough the G30 has the better sounding system. Mindf....

Did you own an F90 M5 Competition? I'm just curious about how you came up with your thesis that the new car is a million times better.

Yes I had a 2019 comp in donnignton gray, and traded it in for a 2022 g80 comp , then 2023 g83 comp, 2023 g87 and now a g90. Here is my ranking:

1. G90 M5
2. G87 M2
3. F90 M5
4. G80 M3
5. G83 M4

Nice! Appreciate the review from an owner of both cars.

I am just so impressed with the overall look and presenence of this car. Not to mention the technology! The size and weight are perfectly fine for me because I'm used to driving 7 Series.
the only bummers for me:
1. No Soft Close doors. WTF BMW???
2. I'm reading that the leather isn't very supple.
3. I want more exterior and interior color combos!

All in all though... I see myself in one as a third vehicle.

By the way, let's see your configuration?

I too liked g90, it drives great, and there is absolutely no lag, you press the pedal and there is instant acceleration. Interior is great, seats are comfortable. It’s definitely a true M imo

Agreed on all fronts. I've had mine for two weeks and I have zero complaints. This was my first 100K$ plus car purchase and it took many years of hard work to get to this position so I was extremely critical before I made the move.

I drove just about everything. Nearly went with a used Turbo S (2022) but the deciding factor was being able to put my wife and son in the car comfortably, as we all know.....zero back seat room in that so this was my compromise. Prior to purchasing my TRX I lived with a 23 comp for a few days and just did not like it at all. Too low, too stiff, not enough room (I'm 6'3' and 240ish). So last year I picked up the TRX and drove that for a year, it was fun at first but the gas become a real problem and while loud and fast-ish, it just wasn't enough and I could not stand how bad the handling was (I get it, its a big truck, but I expected more). Not to mention I despise Stellantis as a company and I was sick of the fear it would get stolen everyday.

My wife has a 24 X5 50e and any chance I got I would drive that over the TRX. Great SUV, plenty fast and amazing on fuel. I was leaning toward the X5M but that was again just too stiff as a daily. I spent some time in Ukraine and Poland for the war over the past two years and I fell in love with seeing the blacked out 7 series that were pretty common over there so I started exploring a 760. Went to look at one locally and put down a deposit but could not take it home due to a recall. As was waiting for the dealer to call me and say it was ready my salesman called and said they had two M5s at the port, one was sold and the other was available. It came in, I drove it, bought it, had PPF done and took it home two days later. This car checks all my boxes. More leg room than my TRX (yes really), luxury of a 7 series without the nasty depreciation, scary fast, great MPG, room for the family and just heavy enough for the tax write off lol. Ride in comfort mode is not a 7 series with the air suspension but its a perfect balance. M1 when I want to have a little fun and M2 when I wanna send some smoke and slide it down an on ramp lol. I love the car.

One thing I have not seen mentioned is I have not charged the car in 8 days. As long as you switch to M1 when driving it will hold the battery at a minimum of 4% (from what I have seen). So essentially you always get the benefit of the electric motor for zero turbo lag. Its genius really. Is it a hybrid? Yes. But also not really in terms of absolutely needing to charge it for the full performance. Cool little loop hole in my opinion the engineers created to eliminate the lag and save on fuel dumped during acceleration.

As for stopping ability and weight, I have the non ceramic brakes and I don't think I could ask for more. I know people roll their eyes but you honestly do not feel like youre in a big sedan in those facets. Yes, it is long...but not a boat as far as handling. OGschafen proved that on his youtube. If youÂ’re on the fence, go for it.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. It's great to hear from prior F90 M5 owners who moved to the G90 M5.

Hi, for the leather con, are you taking about the seat leather or the dash? Is the dash leather that bad?

In some cases digital processing can make a bigger play for quality than speakers and raw power. But if you do both it's even better.

F90 may have had better speakers but processing wise it's 2016 tech.

The dash and door aren't leather; it's their synthetic soft-touch plastic... similar to what is in the iX if you've seen that, but with a texture to it. I've had an X5 with full leather, and I like the actual feel of this stuff better. To me, it feels nice. I've seen some people say this interior is cheap/non-premium, which, maybe, I guess? If you're used to a full-optioned seven series or maybe a Bentley?

Both, it doesn’t feel supple enough. But seats are comfortable. But then I do have a very benchmark for good leather, I have a 23 defender x and it’s leather is amazing. If you park it in the sun, the car even smells like leather…

Yes, adding proper DSP processing is the biggest bang for the buck upgrade that can be done to a car stereo.

I wouldn't even say the F90 B&W had 2016 tech, more like 1990s tech.
The only processing it had was a few bands of stereo graphic EQ, and some gimmicky reverb effects. There was no time alignment for adjusting the stereo image to the seating position, and no individual speaker EQ.

For the guys that have their M5 now, could you take a look at the audio settings adjustments and tell us what the current system offers?

Interested to see this… I’m concerned that coming from a G80 with full leather this is going to be a downgrade, which is hard to believe considering the difference in price and the “upgrade” in series.
