G90 Radar Detector hard wire

Does anyone know if the + and - contacts are the same as the F90 in the mirror housing for power? I don't have my car back yet to look at this.

Easiest hook up for F90 was the fuse box on passenger side with the piggyback plug. Been 3yrs so I don’t remember fuse slot etc but a simple search should yield results on F90 forum and see if the fuse positions are still good

Pretty sure that is correct. I did mine in the mirror housing with mirror taps and it was the same as my G80 and previous BMWs. I just moved over the same one I had in G80 for my Uniden. Pretty simple. There is no switched power but it powers down after about 10-15 mins.

Can someone post a side profile of the rearview mirror stem? I want to see if there is a mount from BlendMount that will fit.

I ordered the mirror tap, just have to figure out how to pull off the housing around the mirror to access the wire harness. I plan on using the same blendmount from my F90.

Garage List
Fuse box with a Fuse Tap is the better place to hook up. No wires cut, and it will be a fused connection for added safety. Removing the A pillar trim is easy for running the cable. Just be sure cable is behind the airbag, and use zip ties to secure it.

Hard to describe!

Tilt the mirror down out of the way for starters.
Tug the edges of the top assembly… likely held with a few clips. Should come away relatively easily. I haven’t done it on this car but have dismantled many others. You get a feel for it.

Use a Multimeter to test your power supply polarity.

Are you just sticking with radar or are you going to fit a laser jammer?

Okay I was able to get the shovel off and have located the tabs but now I am not sure where the wire harness is that I need to access. Looks like some more pieces have to come off. Anyone know what needs to happen next because it doesn’t look like the f90. There is a wire harness in the third pic is this what I need to tap ?

There is also this harness but it is not accessible without taking apart the plastic piece touching the front windshield

There is a clip here, the loosen the plastic piece attached to the windshield on the top, but there has to be another one for the lower piece because it won’t budge with just the top loose.

This is the only wire harness that is accessible. I don’t have a multimeter to test. But it is hopefully in this harness otherwise more things have to come apart. I hope there is a G90 owner who can find out for us.

This is the best and easiest method.

It’s been 3 yrs since I did my valentine in F90. When I have to do same for G 90 I’ll go back to F90 forums and search. You can most likely find the info n that forum

Anyone any idea whether the gear used here to measure speed is Radar or Laser? It appears to be an onboard system fitted to the vehicle.

Looks like laser but that’s difficult to aim from a moving vehicle???

Garda Golf GTI unmarked.

How do you take this plastic box/shovel down

You cannot (safely) tackle this without a multimeter.

As others have suggested, running a clean connection from the fuse box is a better job.
It need not be as onerous a task as you might think.
Suggest:

1. Get some 2-core flex from an automotive store together with a fused piggy-back connector. They’ll advise you on gauge -but it’ll be very light to support just a RD.
A 1A fuse should be plenty.

2. Check if they have a grommet to match the power cable supplied with your RD (you can use a cone cutter (see image) to make a clean hole in a suitable panel to accomodate the grommet. It’ll make the job look OEM.

3. Run the flex from the fuse box up the A pillar. Tuck it into the roof lining (you may need to drop the vanity mirror/sunshade) and bring it out the hole revealed by your previous panel removal at the rear view mirror.

4. After first passing the cut RD cable through the grommet, use some spade connectors to join the flex to the RD cable. (You may need to cut off the ‘cigarette-lighter’ adaptor on the the RD cable to achieve this).

5. Wrap the complete connections in Tesa Tape to prevent them rattling off panels and making annoying squeaks later.

6. Make off the flex at the fuse box. Link the red wire to the piggyback connector. Install it. Fit fuse. Use a crimp-on loop connector to ground the black cable.

Advanced:

You could install a hidden toggle to control the supply of power and kill the RD on demand.

I will try and get a hold of the diagrams to pull down the shovel box, I am not comfortable drilling a hole in my new car.

I need to find the method to remove this bottom piece , the wire harness needed is located in here and hard to access without removing this bottom of the shovel, I found two tabs on top of the shovel but there has to be something else that will make it come off. I am asking my dealer if they know how.
