2015 BMW F80 M3  [10.00]
G90 M5 *or* M850i GC ?

Yeah, yeah....I know. One of these threads. And trust me when I tell you that I have held off on making this post for as long as I could, and was hoping I never would have to turn to strangers on the web....but here we are.

That said, I am interested in people's thoughts:

I finally had to let go of my beloved original Sakir Orange 2015 F80 that I had an amazing European Delivery on. This car was in pristine condition (and still had my original windshield, complete with my green German circle registration sticker!), with full-leather and CF upgrades. I was part of the original bimmerpost e-sys coding and testing team for adaptive euro headlights on the North American F80. I loved this car, truly. It was an engaging car to drive to say the least. But, in the past few years i've had a few lower back issues and driving the F80 on crappy NE PA roads made me all too familiar with what bruised kidney's must feel like...after almost every drive.

It's now time for a new one and the wife gave me a 1/2025 deadline to make up my effin' mind, which I have already gone way overdue.

This car will not be leased or financed. Kept for 2-3 years.

Pro's of the 850: styling is sporty but elegant and perhaps the best in BMW's lineup; cockpit/dash looks great; V8 engine and sound; more comfortable than the F80; fast enough for me; less expensive than the M5; Full leather; Better interior Leather color choices; Diamond B&W; ID7; Buttons; nice fit and finish; the car is finished...no significant updates until the current 8 series ends shortly

Neg's of the 850: Depreciation Monster!!!; somewhat dated technology and interior (this last part is very subjective and isn't necessarily a negative). Diamond B&W is of the older variety; meh OEM tires that I will want to swap out immediately

Pro's of the M5: updated technology; fast; comfortable; aggressive styling that i've seen in person and like; hybrid tech; B&W audio is newer with newer processing; I like the modern interior (but love classic too)

Neg's of the M5: kind of standard 5-series interior; lack of full leather option; exhaust sound; Hankook's; B&W system while newer is not diamond; tablet-style dash/cockpit; I feel like it's unfinished...that it will be updated to address some of these negatives very soon, but not soon enough for me.

I literally go back and forth between both of these and one day i'm ready to buy one, but then the next i'm feeling the other.

I have cross-shopped Porsche and the Panamera 4 was not engaging to drive at all. I enjoyed the handling and even the styling (it seems to get equal amounts of love and hate) but for it's weight it's just too slow. Even the wife was bored during the test drive.

Ultimately, I have to make up my mind and I will, just gathering all the data possible.

Thanks for your thoughts!

From the owner of 2 m8s coupe and convertible to now g90 m5
I would choose the M5 any day and and it is an easy decision but you will need exhaust for this car so consider resonator delete or aftermarket given the car is extremely quite
The reason is
More comfortable more modern more space in the back uptodate infotainment more power and a true M car regarding handling , looks more agressive better b&w and trust me will make wife more happy given more space and comfortable (bzw m850 tires are worse then the hankook m5 given they are run flats)
Negative for g90 m5 it will depreciate more then m850 and exhaust sound

I kind of figured if you were to reply, that would be your answer

None of what you say surprises me, except the depreciation part. In fact, the 8 series is so well known for being a depreciation tank that it’s a joke among owners. Buying an 8 series is an exercise of love.

I know that all upper luxury models (especially bmw) tend to depreciate much more (with the exception of some Porsche models), but what makes you think the G90 will depreciate even MORE than the 8 series?

I think the hybrid components will make this car depreciate given a lot of uncertainty about how reliable will it be long term
So I can say it will at least depreciate as much the 8 series did if not more
