AMG E-Performance products
Curious to hear what you guys think of the latest crop of AMGs? I drove the S63 E-Performance extensively in Germany as well as the G90 M5. Impressive car - to me far more impressive than the M5 in terms of dynamic prowess. It handles in a way you don't really expect or imagine for a 2,5 tonnes S-Class, its just so capable, precise, and communicative in a way the M5 G90 just can not match. Eventually of course if you push it too much you feel the weight when going too fast in a corner - but it takes a lot more to understeer than the G90 M5, and its braking is simply insane for what it is. On the other hand its extremely stiff for an S-Class (its stiff even for normal car standards, its harsher than any current M car). The powertrain integration although vastly improved still has hesistancy and delays (1s for the gas engine to kick in unlike the M5), the regeneration is worse than the M5, the transmission is harsh even in comfort mode (but its quicker than the Bimmer's gearbox). Apparently the E53 AMG is pretty impressive too. |

Firstly, to be clear im no fanboy nor am I loyal to any one brand. Ive always and own both Mercedes & BMW products and typically I own the models where the experience, aesthetics and value are the greatest IMHO. After selling my X6M back in 2023, my daily is a 2021 E53 which I purchased as a temp car waiting for the new LCI to be released, hence why I didnt go with the E63 (really hoping to have seen one). After the release, I really was considering the the new E53, however there was a number of factors that swayed me from ordering one.
1. The looks, as much as I love the interior of the car, the exterior for me just wasnt all there. Yes they call it a baby S, but by looks it definitely is not the S which is just that much more refined and looks rich (I love it), handling ive never drove one but ive heard its fantastic for the price ($200k+) you pay same with the AMG-GT 4 door. 2. I hate Mercedes for losing their core values with alot the AMG fleet of cars. V8 to V6, and now keeping the title of the C63 with 4cylinder is completely sad, of course this point is just personal opinion. 3. Performance, I really wasnt too impressed by the reviews. I keep hearing the ICE transition to gas is very rough as well as slow to kickdown on gear changes or even upshifts, the transmission logic isnt refined yet. I do like the battery mileage if far better on the E the G. If I had to decide on either car based on interior looks and comfort, the E53 wins hands down. Beautiful white leather bucket MASSAGE seats with a beautiful interior leather trim in matching color, soft close doors, a real functional pano-roof, Alcantara steering wheel, air ride suspension. The Mercedes ride is far more comfortable than any BMW ive owned, and it's my preference to drive on long trips. Where im lost on the E53 is the exterior, its similar to my current E53 and I absolutely hate the new rear triangle tail lights and the front end looks fugly, again IMHO. While I spend more time looking at the inside of a car, the cars exterior will always be my gremlin, its the same with my previous F96, I HATED the rear of the car....HATED!. That said, the exterior despite contrary opinions the G90 is absolutely an updated improved LCI version from the F90 although not as aggressive, it hits the note for a daily business class sports sedan. If I wanted a sportier distinct track car, i'd of ordered an M4, and if I wanted to flex of course the AMG-4 door or S. Also compared to the E53 the G90 retains it's heritage and virtue of an enthusiasts V8 (albeit terrible exhaust note). The G90 has AWD, 2WD, DRIFT mode, and the reviews regarding ride quality has drastically improved over the F90. After pricing out both the E53 and G90, even though the creature comforts the E had over the G90 the overall net value for performance, looks, and spirited drivability was in favor of the G90, which was around $20k more than the E53.... In the end, I wanted to keep up with the Jone's and most of my friends on the road, the G90 was an easy decision for me. |
