Not as good as my previous and cars …. I am on pireilli scorpions winter tires with orignal sizes and with slippery pavement and snow in Canada the rear is very loose ….. a decreased the rear tires pressure as recommended psi seems a bit too high compared to the fronts (Bmw recommends 33 front / 38 rear but at full load I couldn’t find partial load recommendations ) helped a bit but the awd is clearly rear biased compared to my previous Audi rs6 Quattro and my porsche Macan GTS awd ….. front tires are very sensitive to surface ruts and truck grooves so add to the instability the moment the pavement gets slippery

Which mode are you using in the snow? do any of the M5’s gajillion settings help?

That’s my question as well. I thought default settings IS a rear wheel biased AWD, but there is a standard non-biased AWD setting as well, or am I misinformed?

That was my understanding too. BUT, it is a little hard to divine how it all works. This would be a daily driver for me and driving in snowy conditions is just the way it is.

I also have Pirelli Scorpions mounted on my G90. For my part I find that the car and the tires behave very well in the snow. In this case, weight is clearly an advantage! By comparison, my M3 G80 Xdrive mounted on Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 is much less stable. I use 4WD mode rather than 4WDsport and the car is much more neutral.

There is 3 settings
4wd which is default mode and still rear biased compared to the Audi Quattro system
4wd sport even more rear biased (never used yet in winter
2wd…. Death mode in the winter here in Canada lol

I think we just discovered that the air pressure recommended by the manufacturer is not the same for the G90 and the G99! Here's my door tag, it's 33 psi front and 35 psi rear. I use 31 psi at the front and 33 psi at the rear for better grip.

Also in turns. My G80 tends to understeer more in snow because the front wheels float. The G90 is more neutral in 4WD and oversteering in 4WD sport. But as I mentioned they are not the same tires either.

Check the load rating on those Pirelli’s. If they are below the factory rating of 110 and 111 you will want to run HIGHER than stock pressures. You can do some quick math based on the load rating of your tires to determine how much pressure you need to match the factory tires at 33/35 psi.

This has all left me a smidge confused. Here's what I understand:

- the car always has a a rearward bias that may or mayn't be a problem in snow.
- You can use other tires for greater or lesser effect. Pirellis are available.

But I'm still left with the question - How's it do in the snow?

This is clearly not an issue, compared to my other cars it's even very good. And I never saved on winter tires.

Do not have my G99 yet, however, am running a ‘25 XM with Pirelli Scorpion Winters in the Twin Cities. People complaining about the rear end feeling loose, that is the RWS. You change, just slightly, the contact portion of the tire on the pavement every time you turn or take a curve, and it makes the rear end feel like it is losing grip. Once you get used to that feeling, and what it is, adjust your expectations and it will be just fine. TLDR: RWS feels like the rear end is fishtailing, once tires are straightened it pulls through just fine.

Well…. i never thought about that! Among the many settings, can one disable RWS?

Yikes !!! So 38 at the back is way too high compared to your 33 psi !!! So that must be the reason for the loose rear !

Great explanation! Still not a great feeling on icy roads though …

Everyone saying pretty good/decent is on scorpions/all seasons. Pop some blizzaks on and it should be as good as any other car in the snow. Snow is more about tires than any other variable. My f80 rwd m3 was better in the Snow with blizzaks than my 2014 s4 was with all seasons.

Meanwhile I've been stuck in a range rover with all seasons with less than 2 inches of snow. Dedicated snows on this platform should be as good as just about anything else out there assuming you don't have a ground clearance issue with a big front lip or spoiler.

The only thing that this car is designed to plow through is my bank account, not snowdrifts or inclement weather. My sleeping beauty will be in hibernation until the weather breaks.
