500 Miles in on the G90 vs F90 [owner of both]

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I well I went into this purchase with somewhat negative expectations due to one loving my 22 M5C and two all the negative opinions etc regarding PHEV, overall weight, interior materials etc.

The car did not change my mind immediately however I can say that after a week or two with the vehicle I’ve really come to like it a lot. Here are my impressions on why it grows on you quickly.

1. 3 cars in one. I was not an EV person at all, actually the opposite. However after now having the ability to tool around for short trips on hybrid or mostly electric in hybrid mode I really dig it. Don’t have to short cycle motor and you save a few sheckles in gas! I have M1 set to ICE w moderate engine, chassis, transmission settings and M2 is full launch with all to max settings. So you end up with a quiet smooth around town cruiser in EV, a responsive car in M1 that the wife doesn’t give me looks bc it’s stiff and sensitive and then full hooligan mode.

2. Styling. I got the dark grey frozen with red/black interior, black rims annd CCB and the lines look great. Muscular but not comedic. Get a lot of the younger crowd pulling up beside me with windows down and cameras out they love it

3. Comfort. This car is a LOT more comfortable than my F90…….. like a lot. For a daily driver it is a huge improvement and DD is 95% of the task for the car. The interior is definitely a let down for 142k car but the tech gets you past it as it is not dated and works well. HUGE difference when I clean wife’s X7 M50i with full tartufo which seems very upscale but what can you do? Changed out the front mid speaker covers for the B&W lighted versions and that helps the front door panels. The size of the interior also feels more roomy and comfortable. Assisted Drive Pro is much better than in the 22

I’d say that for all the nay sayers ragging on the car without driving it they may be pleasantly shocked once they lived with it for a week. Unless you’re looking for only performance the G90 delivers.

Spot on
Coming from m8 i can say the same
People has to drive the car for a week or so to understand
I bet if bmw presented this car with 800 hp from factory or maybe 750 like the label xm people would have complained much less given it would have outperformed the previous generation on paper and people will stop bitching it
My only let down exhaust sounds which is fixable
The tech will make for the few low jnterior quality parts but i prefer fresh look over old tech if there is no choice to have both

Nailed it! And second thing people will soon catch on to is the tuning potential of this beast! The fact it launches sub 3.5 stock is crazy already.

I just got mine. I had a 2021 M550 because I felt the M5 was too rough for frequent driving. Been driving it for 3 weeks and I agree with you 100%.

Still trying to get used to the too many apps and gizmos, too many.

Been reading the book, almost 500 pages.

I think is a great car. I was worried I’ll miss my M550 but I’m good.

On the comfort level:
For context I’ve had f30 which I found comfy enough and then msport g42 which almost broke my back so I trade in for base g05 which is super comfortable…like 17hrs in one day from El Paso to Bay Area comfortable.

Where do you think this M5 is on that spectrum because I saw Harry’s garage complain that it’s stiff? (I don’t think any dealer would let me test drive one any time soon to see it for myself)

How dare you mention you're able to toil around town in it in full electric mode! This is crazy,...as anyone that can afford an F90 M5,...and a G90 M5,...at the same time!...heck, or any M5 for that matter should never mention any savings on fuel because of the advanced technical capabilities of the vehicle! And certainly not an M5.

But wait, last you checked, your hard earned dollar$ bought the entire G90 M5 with all of its current tech glory! So hell yeah,...toil around town as much as you desire in it,...you 100% earned it.

Lastly, for those that absolutely hate PHEVs,...well, they'll never get it! Thanks for the post and enjoy,...both of them.

PS: No! I'm not going to ask which one you're going to part with.

Now THIS is the type of Review I've been waiting for! An actual owner of BOTH without all of the biased bullshit. Your key points are exactly what I've gathered based on countless reviews I've read or seen. And they are exactly why I want and will be adding this car to my garage.
Cheers 🥃

Ok seems like a lot of questions on the horn (Speaker) cover exchange for the front mid speakers. First off this is not a project for the feint of heart. Directions were in Chinese with some English added in but they were slim and turned out that a lot more attachment points for the door panels needed to be un welded to allow the lower panel enough room to separate to remove the original cover and install the replacement. I screwed up my first door panel attempting the swap and half way through was wishing I hadn’t ventured into project but at that point I was past the point of no return. Fortunately the mobile leather guy says he can make it almost as good as new. The second door panel went much smoother having the experience from first.
Some of these pics are from instructions and some from my car so there will be different interiors.

First Pic: OEM cover to be swapped

Second 2 Pics: Lighted replacement cover

Third Pic: Damage removing original cover when only speaker cover welds per instructions were removed and was way to tight. A real FML moment

Link to kit for front mid speaker covers only:

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...apt=4itemAdapt

The vendor was very responsive and also waited to confirm that kit would work on our door panels before he sold them to me. Was responsive post sale and through install process.

I’ll put the instructions sent for install as well

LOL I am in agreement with you. Keep in mind car has only 500 miles so I have been taking it easy on her. After the 1200 service she will get wrung out as she should and the petrol usage will go way up 😂

Sadly the 22 M5C was turned in on lease end and hopefully ends up in good hands. She was well maintained and under mileage and looked about as good as when I first got her. Here was my final pic saying bye on the turn in.

Too Quiet

One thing I failed to mention coming from the M5C with MPE exhaust is that the car is too quiet. Even my wife who was not a fan of the 22 and the MPE said new car is too aggressive looking to not have this quiet exhaust. It’s a lease and since there was no MPE port add on option to amortize over lease I’ll look for an economically reasonable option. I’ve offered to be test bed for a manufacturer so hopefully their valved system won’t be too far off in future.

The car in sport is similar to the F90 in comfort. Sport plus is a little stiffer still. In comfort mode it is not floaty but also not jarring. Deep wallows in road will move you around bit in either comfort or sport it’s NOT harsh at all. Another aspect I forgot to mention in the initial post was the assisted driving is worlds better than my 2022. The flat bottom wheel sits right about my knee and when placed against the wheel I don’t get any hands on wheel warnings so that level of just cruising is really un involved. I know it’s a M5 supposed to be involved but it’s nice for DD to be able to not have to pay so much attention.

On the highway it tracks very well and alsways feel planted and cruises at high speeds in total comfort. This could rival your G05 for comfort as the new seats are also super comfortable

Hey there!

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts! I can't wait to get my G99 next week.

Any chance you could share more specifically, or a screenshot of how you set up your M1 and M2? I really like what you said, and I actually just opened another post this morning where I ask the guys who have this car already, how they set up their M1/M2 buttons.

A screenshot of the settings would be amazing!

Thanks!!!

The car looks imposing and special. I had one pull up next to me in my M8 GC.

It looked modern and super nice. I can see myself moving back to the M5 in a couple of years.

If someone wants a proper sports sedan, buys the F90.
If for someone having a less sporty, more comfortable sports sedan with a TV in front of you with a hybrid powertrain which is already weird to have in an M5, that person buys the G90.
I cannot imagine myself driving an electric vehicle, especially if that car used to be the best sports limousine money could buy. I would feel like I bought an inferior car.

People can still use the V8 for short trips, because why not? That fuel consumption won't make you go bankrupt. If you want a car for short trips, buy another car for short trips. But if you want an M5 for short trips, use the V8 because you have an M5, not an i5.

About the styling only bad things can be said. It's subjective that's true, but there are some objective things what most people see. Look at the interior, look at the quality, the feel of the materials. All inferiors! Yes, I sat in the G90 and also the F90 and the F90 is far superior if you asked me. The G90 should be a cheaper car, because all the materials used, the powertrain should justify the lower price. Call me a hater or call this reply a rant, but there's nothing wrong if he hate some cars and some things in cars. Why would that be a problem?

When we drove the F90 back in the days, people filmed us in the F90 more than in the G90, because you can't hear the car so it gets no attention. From females no attention, because they don't like the car either. Only those people filmed the G90 who wanted to have content, views, subscribers, followers on their social media profiles...It didn't draw as much attention here in Europe as the F90 did.

The F90 can be used as a hooligan car, but not the G90. That's like a modern coffin which tries to be cool, but it's nowhere close to his M5 heritage.

Awesome write up.
I’m finding myself in a “want to drive G90 more than F90” moments more then I thought I would 🤣 that’s how comfy it is around the town
.
I have a set of those speaker covers, need to push myself and have them installed. Was the wiring connection easy?
