Matt Watson changes his mind about the new M5

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
As many G90 owners try to explain, Matt Watson has discovered in this new video that the new M5 is not only exciting to drive but much faster in common driving situations. The whole video is interesting but particularly the last two minutes.

Huh...imagine that.

There will always be the keyboard warriors who have never even seen this car in person, let alone drive it, that will double down that it's the worst BMW M car ever, but glad to see Matt eventually saw the light.

Expected. As you can see, there are far fewer kids blabbering about weight and other nonsense.

BMW probably gave him a good shakedown for the past review.

As a M car, its probably the worse M5 in the M5 history. As a car - car, its a little bit better to the F90 which was the previous best.

This is my veredict after a ton of miles in a G90. Its a pretty good car though, I really dig it.

i think they likely did... and its good to see its fast but an 11.6 is slower than an M3 comp x and the 1/4 mile trap speed of 125 is high but absurdly low for a 727 hp car... again, this goes back to the extreme weight... I don't think the Rs6 and Gt63 are really comps for this car but more so its predecessor at this point and how it compares... the Rs6 to me is just not an impressive car overall and never has been. It would also be very interesting to see this thing hustle around some turns vs the older M5... we may not see that tho

Better car than F90, but still worst M5. Yeah, makes sense

If Matt was concerned about that he wouldn't have done the first video the way he did. Plus most of the cars that Matt seems to do videos on are NOT provided to him by BMW themselves.

Regardless there will always be people that will want to believe whatever they want to justify their position on this car for some reason.

Trust me it will surprise you as it did to me
Coming from m8 coupe which is more nimble then previous f90 m5 and this car can go through the same corners and get out as fast if not faster then my m8
The only thing it will be breaking on a track then you need ccbs to manage the extra weight
Everyone saying no then they never pushed the car in the corners or scared to do so
Again i am not a pro driver but i am seasoned and trained driver (i used to drive ambulances and like a maniac)
It is not by luck that everyone drives this car says that is a fun car to drive
Again if people want to hate they will hate
How many previous m5 owners used to track their cars 1%?!
Again compared to previous m5 it will perform thesame through corners .
Again previous m5 was NOT a sports car so please people stop complaining if you guys track your car eveymry day and now can Not because of the weight

unfortunately I think we've reached the point with the size and weight of this class of car that buyers are much less worried about hustling these beasts around some turns. They are highly capable but I don't see this class anymore as meant to play in the canyon carver category. Will be interesting to see if the next gen of Audi wagons makes them more competitive from a performance standpoint. They've always been amongst the best looking but a step behind dynamically. Huge opportunity right now for Audi if they step up the performance and don't try and keep growing size and weight.

Audi is going to have a make a tough decision to either satisfy enthusiasts that cares about weight and going to the track or increasing their sales number due to annual tax benefits that PHEV brings for folks in europe.

Are you really quoting times without taking into account that they were done in the rain??? All three cars are much faster in the dry. The latest test for the G90 M5 by Car & Driver: 10.9 at 130mph. My G80 M3 comp is nowhere near that.

C&D m3 comp is 11.0 at 124MPH for quarter mile. So a good bit faster at the mark but time is quite close. They all include 1ft roll out so add in .2/.3 second.

Also, I agree you can clearly see the ground is wet. These times from this video and not representative of their top performance. It’s just good to see how they compare against the competitors in the same conditions. It is annoying is seems almost every M5 video over the years is in the wet.

I changed my opinion on the G90. But was not a radical change. Matt went full 180 degrees. Trust me, there is more to it than meet the eyes. Its fine to dislike the car too, each one has their own individual preferences.

To me the problem is that most dont understand the car and BMW did a terrible job too at advertising and explaining what it is.

I am not shy about admitting I hated the new m5 and everything about it when first announced however after test driving it I realized I was wrong about a lot of things. I agree that BMW did a terrible job on advertising the m5. The youtubers did a better job.

if there is one terrible modern M car that award has to go to the X3M. What a piece of garbage.

No need to be a child about it.

I know you bought one and the second part of my comment wasn't directed at you

I still have not got it. I wrote a whole thread on M5 delays. Its a pain in the ass. I pre ordered the car on September or October, still no build date and no idea when its coming. It already got delayed 3 times. Mine will be among the first batch here

Its one of the things that got me a little carried away so I am sorry. I understand during the pandemic, but the delays and lack of precise info has gotten ridiculously thus far.
