G99 M5 Touring may not be that exclusive... Orders Greatly Exceeding Expectations

M5 Touring Orders Are Greatly Exceeding Expectations, BMW M Exec Says

BMW M vice president of customer, brand and sales Sylvia Neubauer claims that current production of the latest M5 is actually split evenly between sedan and wagon variants. She notes that BMW has increased production for both sedan and wagon variants, but heavier interest has led the brand to increase production more on the Touring side; after initially planning to build the cars at a 2-to-1 sedan-to-wagon ratio, about half the cars coming off the line at the moment have a long roof.

They can't sell the sedans (car is brand new and there's hundreds sitting unsold), most people want the wagon ... this was inevitable for them to make money on the car. I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of it there's more tourings than sedans.

Interesting bit about the 3-series wagon “never” coming the US. Smart of them to say that in my particular case, because I would hold out for a 3.

BMW better get moving on releasing more Touring allocations instead of the same batch they released back in Dec/Jan. I feel like they shot themselves in the foot because people want the Touring but the limited allocations is giving greedy dealers a chance to mark them up one way or another.

Another fault on BMW is letting spy shots of the LCI 5 reveal it will be a massive update giving people pause if that comes out in a short 2 years given the M5 just came out.

Is this regional, US specific, or global?

I think BMW NA was rather cautious on the Touring and wants to gauge actual interest first and then will ramp up allocations based on the success of the initial round of allocations.

The problem with this strategy is they released one allocation per dealer...so while you have markets where there is a list 14 deep and only one vehicle, other, smaller markets are still sitting on theirs...so unless they are tapping into the dealer lists, I don't know how they are gauging the true demand for the vehicle.

an order bank just shows potential interest and a dealer can stack those that may not be real. I think they want to see how quickly they actually sell and the initial allocation covered production through April.

A handful of dealers got more than 1 (believe it was 10 dealers).

Don't think BMW NA wanted to overbuild with the initial batch and risk having them sit and that would truly kill the Touring for the US market.

I get that, I was just saying if they look at just what's sold they might get a skewed perspective on the actual nationwide demand if a handful of small dealers are still sitting on their allocations. And yet you would have hundreds of potential customers in larger markets stuck down the list. Would appear that the demand was not there with unsold allocations, but in fact they could have sold them 4 -5 times over if they have given the larger markets more slots.

PS, don't forget my G99 build is in May

Understood on that point, but I think NA was just trying to be fair even though BMW of Monterey got 3 of them!

My G99 was originally scheduled for April and slipped to May

Unfortunately mine is going away. The touring is taking its place as the daily, but I also have something else on the way as the fun track toy…

It would destroy the M5 touring sales if the M3 touring was available. I still hate the pig nose but can't deny the its a potent all-around package right around the 100K sweet spot.

Sedans are definitely sitting. Can’t even trade my allocations.

What does BMW expect? It’s relatively ugly, extremely heavy but most importantly it’s a hybrid. 0/3. Way to listen to the consumer, BMW.
