BMW scraps M3 CSL.
Given the current economic environment and current M3 sales, this comes as no surprise to me.

circa 2002/03, mercedes made an s55 amg that was an N/A V8. The next year they decided to add a supercharge and keep the name and price basically the same. The car gained over 100hp. My buddy, a college junior at the time, went and traded his 02 s55 for an 03 s55 immediately.
If BMW did that with the M3, keeping the price about the same, I'm sure they could overcome the economic environmentent and sales slump.

So due to gas concerns, BMW is scrapping the M3 CSL. And it's scrapping it's Audi R8 competitor, the M1 Homage concept.
But despite gas concerns, it will move forward with M versions of the X5 and X6 SUVs? I'm starting to question its business strategy. |

BMW may be more nimble than most but change is not instantaneous. Also, I saw a large number of X5's and M5 station wagons when I was in Europe this May. US market may not be the only consideration.

Trust me when I say this. BMW is not cancelling the M3 CSL. The same source said that they werent bringing back the M1. He continued to say it when CAR and every other rag claimed they were. The M3 CSL wont be here for a good 3yrs. It is suppose to be the Pinnacle of ''Efficient Dynamics."

I'm going to trust you!
It makes me wonder about if BMW really understands NA. Sure, they can/do sell the SUVs here, but I believe that BMW brass think SUVs here are like station wagon/estates there. Because there are cars like the M5 touring/RS6/R36, they think we in turn want those as well in the form of an SUV. They'll sell a few, but not as many M3 CSL's. Note to BMW: Bring us the 123d. You'll make bank. |

all they know is that porsche has a 450hp cayenne and mercedes has a ML63 AMG, and people buy range rovers, which are pretty much the most unreliable new car in the US and costs over $100K, and BMW wants a piece of the action.
i'm sure it doesn't help things when they come to LA to test the new bimmers and see all of these lux suv's rolling around.

BMW definitely does not fully understand the market. They thought the MINI would be a flop outside of NY, LA, SF and Seattle.
They consistently de-content their cars in little ways that just don't make any sense at all like taking auto up windows out of the MINI even though the rest of the world had them and other BMW's had them, they don't include rear fog switches on their US cars either even though the equipment is all there. They refuse to bring the 5 door 1 series here stopped bringing the station wagons over. In all honesty, I sometimes think much of their success here is an accident. |

K I doubt any of us can say BMW doesn't understand the market. They hire people whose only job is to inspect the US market. Even if it seems dumb to a few of us, there is some reason why a bunch of highly educated people analyzing the market believe it would be a good idea.
On another note, I think the MX6 or w/e their gonna call it is a horrible idea. It'd be nice to see how it would perform, I wouldn't be surprised to see it out perform the cayenne turbo, but I think they should go back and make the car look good first. It looks like a damn Aztec from the back. |
