I don't think that bend in the hood over the headlight is possible in metal production. Nice design though. If it had a next-gen 3.5L N52 non-turbo at 320 HP with the manual RWD drivetrain I think it would be more in line with the traditional BMW ethos.

But regulations and enviros don't let such cars exist anymore.

Is that not how the F22 (2 series) hood looks?

Actually, this render is heavily based on the G42 (2 series) with only headlights / lower bumper changed.

Classic re-touched AI that has no engineering understanding whatsoever. It's form over function. Check out the size of that steering wheel, presumably taken from a local school bus. lol

Yep. Love it. Slightly smaller grille and it would be perfect.

At first, I hated it. But honestly, looking at it more, if it was in a different color (my dad had the most busted, rusty old 2002 ever in red, so red for me), I think it could work. The whole design needs to be a little more squared off though.

That said, this design won't sell in China so BMW won't do it.

Just need to neaten up the leading edge of the hood, especially for lighter colors...

the car looks good and a lot of people here hating on it are a bunch of idiots (Yes i said it)

Why?
it looks better than a lot of the crap with fake grilles, gills and ridiculous contours BMW is making now
BMW needs to get back to making elegant carts with simple lines that ages well
Focus on great engines and suspensions that are fun to drive and that people want to own and collect.

a few tweaks here and there and this could be a really nice car Id want to own

Nailed it! The lower bit is still a bit busy, but I guess that's a BMW trademark now!

2K2: The Reborn 02 Series That Never Was – by Steve Saxty
"If there’s one car that put BMW on the map in America, then it’s the 02 Series. The ’60s predecessor of the ’70s 3 Series set the template for compact rear-drive sedans that handled with more fun than any contemporary competitor. Americans loved it as something unique despite – or, maybe because of – it being unlike anything they had experienced. Although BMW and its customers grew up into the 3 Series there was (and yes, still are) 02 Series fans working inside BMW. Together, they hatched an ingenious plan in the 90s to bring back the 2002 for the year 2002 codenamed, yes, the 2K2. It’s a fantastic never-seen car discovered while writing “BMW Behind The Scenes” and this is its story.

Designer Andreas Zapatinas joined BMW in ’94 and was soon asked to submit competing ideas for the second-generation BMW Compact codenamed E46/5. The existing car had been sold as a shortened, cheaper 3 Series, but Andreas had a different idea. During his college days studying in New York, Andreas had owned a couple of 02 Series, “They were cheap and a bit rusty, but I loved them!” he laughs. “I worked out that it would come out around 2002. So, rather than do it as a hatchback it could be a three-box sedan and of course, call it 2002!” He sketched away and with the help of Werner Haumayr created one of the digital renderings drawn at BMW. Sadly, his design wasn’t selected, Andreas moved on and – in the normal course of events that would be it.

However, another 2002 owner had similar “2002 for 2002” thoughts a few years later in ’97. Ralf Langmeier was a BMW engineer that was looking at ways to visualize body structures that had the visual appeal of the designers’ sketches. He recalls: “I pulled in three or four engineers, and we looked at how we could rework the E46 3 Series Coupe as a stripped-down car. We asked Knut Mayser from Marketing to serve as our product manager, and he was very clear – it had to be under 1000kg at a time when other cars were putting on weight. We had a technical concept, projected performance, weight, power and torque from the four-cylinder engine and a codename; 2K2. I heard that Design had a 2002-style shape, so I went to Chris Bangle and suggested we merge it with our technical concept.” Chris saw the obvious possibility in Ralf’s idea – here was a chance to get the new 2002 off the ground by teaming Ralf up with Thomas Plath one of the most senior people in BMW Design.

Thomas recalls, ‘I did one sketch at home, inspired by Andreas’s design, that many said felt like an Alfa Romeo. After that first sketch, I did a tape drawing on a wall and then we constructed a virtual model called a BSP, Blitz Schnell Prototype. It was milled out of foam and put on an E46-generation 3 Series chassis, with a big hole in the middle and a seat in to make it drivable – all done in four weeks from that sketch to something with a steering wheel.” Everyone liked the idea and in summer ’98 Ralf decided to take it one stage further, to make it into a full-drivable production ready car using lightweight composite body panels – he knew just who to turn to.

Max Reisböck ran the concept workshop and was a legend inside BMW for making the first 3 Series wagon at home in his spare time. Ralf turned to Max to ask if he could build the 2K2 who, after seeing the computer drawings, said simply “Sure, OK, that’s not a problem.” Six months later, and a 300-page book that detailed how to construct it, the 2K2 – built on an E46 coupe base – was ready to test drive at BMW’s Aschheim test track. Naturally, Ralf Langmeier was one of the four people aboard. “We all sat there, with fire extinguishers in our laps, and off we went, benchmarking it against a high-torque BMW 330 diesel. The 2K2 had a lowered differential ratio, so it really took off and beat the 3 Series right up to 180 km/h!” The car had delivered thrills and met expectations on the track but, if it was to get a chance of production, it needed the go-ahead from senior management.

When they reviewed it in December ’97. First up was Chris Bangle, and Thomas Plath recalls his views. “Quite rightly, Chris said it looked a bit stiff, and the greenhouse seemed to dominate the car. Having deliberately carried over a lot of parts, we were so enthusiastic because we wanted to get it into production. But it was really more of a workhorse to do studies on light weight and feasibility. From a design perspective it needed another pass at it since it didn’t have the appearance of new century design.” The car was coming to life, but it needed to look more to the future than the past. So Chris Bangle called in American designer Chris Chapman to update the 2K2.

So far so good, but things were bad elsewhere at BMW. The British Rover company that BMW owned was in dire straits and desperately needed a new small car far more than BMW. Chapman was asked to drop the 2K2 and start work on Rover R30, another car in “BMW by Design” that never saw the light of day. None of it was Chapman’s fault; BMW was hemorrhaging cash propping up Rover and decided to sell the ailing carmaker, instantly raising the opportunity for BMW to make a small car once more. In March 2000 Burkhard Göschel was announced as the new R&D boss, and he called a meeting for the 2,000 engineers and designers. He turned to Ralf Langmeier and said, “So, do you want to do that car then?” Ralf certainly did and replied, “Yes, we have a car and a business case.” However, the Marketing side of the house pointed out that the larger market was for a five-door hatchback, not a two-door sedan.

Designer Chris Chapman: “There was an old 2K2 clay that was getting banged up, so I started working on that as a way to create my 1 Series coupe.” Of course, it was almost inevitable that his design won, and the E87 first-generation 1 Series emerged, not in the year 2002 but in 2004 as a hatchback. When the E82 two-door coupe finally saw the light in 2007, it still wore the high-shouldered look that Andreas Zapatinas had sketched 12 years earlier. Nobody had any idea that the smash hit new coupe had been waiting so long for the right time to step forward."

People are entitled to their opinion, and said opinion doesn't make them an idiot. This isn't real design, it's AI, so it's completely unrestrained, and unrealistic, and therein lies the beauty. Making it work, however, would be another thing entirely.
