Karen Read trial - anybody following?
Now that the jury is out for deliberation, I am curious if anybody else has been following this crazy polorizing case like I've been. My family has been calling me "alternate juror #16, since I've been following it so closely
![]() For me, I just don't think she hit him, too many things just don't add up. John O'Keefs's arm surely didn't get all of those marks from a taillight of a Lexus SUV. Even the seasoned coroner said "it doesn't matter how fast it was going, it never hit him". Anybody who has ever had an SUV knows that if you drive even 1 mile with a broken taillight in East Coast winter snow season that you'll have all kinds of road film inside the housing. Hers was clean. It all just doesn't add up to me. The (believable) snowplow driver never saw him laying there when he went by after she allegedly hit him and left him there. The shady behavior of his friends dumping cell phones, getting rid of their dog, remodeling the already renovated basement leaves me wondering what's really up with them and the terrible investigation. I think she's a very unlikable person who is being framed for his murder by his friends. She does deserve a DUI though, she was wasted. I guess the other jurors will figure it all out . ![]() |

I have been following it since the first trial. I'm not a conspiracy freak but do think a few things are very odd, especially the fact that LEOs never entered the house or interviewed the people at the house. Is she a whack job? Yes. Was she drunk? Yes. Do I think she killed him? No.
We shall she. ![]() I think there is definitely reasonable doubt.

His arm did it for me (among other things) - I've been hit by a car and attacked by a dog. His wounds looked more like mine after the dog, the car hit didn't look nowhere even close to his marks, I had bruises and was skinned a bit, but not punctures like that. I feel bad for his family that they'll never REALLY know what happened to him, but it looks like they want it pinned on Karen too. |

I have been loosely following the case (not the trials) since I watched the documentary on HBO (suggested by a friend). I then listened to a few podcasts on the first trial.
While I don't think she hit him intentionally I am not 100% that she didn't hit him accidentally. I do think that in the first trial (and I assume the second) there was overwhelming reasonable doubt (mostly caused by a badly executed investigation with too many people having conflicts of interest) to be able to convict her. I'll be interested to see the outcome of the second trial. And if it is another hung jury if they will try her again. |

I still have a hard time seeing how his injuries are consistent with being hit with a car instead of a fist and bitten by a dog (that suddenly was rehomed after having her for years). |

This case was so poorly investigated and prosecuted that I'll be shocked if they get a conviction. I have no idea if she did it or not, but there's serious reasonable doubt here with all the screwups and coverups. And then there was that whack-job blogger...
![]() What a mess.

I watched the documentary of the first trial and went back and forth on what I thought, but ended thinking she probably didn’t kill him and the case probably should not have been re-tried after the police work came to light. Haven’t followed the second trial.
Agree with comments she is an unlikeable drunk. Seems like he was too and hard to be sure how he died.

Not guilty
DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — A jury found Karen Read not guilty of second-degree murder Wednesday in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend in a polarizing and highly watched case. The same jury found her guilty of a lesser charge of drunken driving. The jury handed down its decision after deliberating for at least 22 hours since June 13 https://news.yahoo.com/news/jury-rea...184716323.html A jury on Wednesday acquitted Read, 45, on the most serious charges in her second trial of leaving John O’Keefe to die in a snowstorm after hitting him with her car outside a suburban Boston house party more than three years ago. She was also acquitted of leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The only charge Read was found guilty of is operating under the influence of liquor — or drunk driving, landing her with one year of probation. https://nypost.com/2025/06/18/us-new...-murder-trial/

I’m glad my fellow jurors came up with the same verdict as “alternate juror #16” (me) so my kids won’t roast me. 😂
So much just didn’t add up, but at least she got a drunk driving charge. I hope they find out what really happened, he sounded like a normally pretty decent person. Last edited by wrickem; 06-18-2025 at 05:15 PM.. |

And the bills will continue. His family filed a wrongful death civil suit. I can't even imagine what her legal bills are.

Has to be millions. Guessing she will probably write a book and sell her story to make a movie, although there was already at least one documentary and we won’t be interested in this case much longer now that it is resolved.

I’m sure somebody will let me know when she starts shopping for a book deal, I work for one of the “Big Five” publishers. The Next case for “Juror 16” is Rex Heuermann, the Gilgo Beach murderer. His first wife is one of our best friend’s first cousin, who was married to him for less than a year,so he’s practically like family ![]() ![]() |

I hadn't heard about this "related" case until this morning.
