laser jamming defense products
on my drive down from the bay area to san diego i was hit by CHP using laser on the 5 (haven't encountered laser on 5 before). Got me thinking that our cars are pretty vulnerable to a laser shot given the huge headlights we have. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with laser jammers such as the Blinder and/or coating products like Veil. I've read through threads on the radardetector forum but i'm always skeptical given the huge vendor influences
thanks!

blinder is crap dont buy that. I hope you know that laser jammers are illegal in California and they will tow your car if they see you have one, and they are very easy to notice because of the jamming heads in the front, and more noticeable in the rear.

You can also get spotted from the air. If the highway has solid lines painted across every mile, then that is an area they might be using helicopters or planes to check for speedsters. 60 Mph is one mile per minute, so all they have to do from the air is time you between highway markings and calculate your speed off a handy chart they carry. ie - 45 seconds between markings is 80 Mph. It is all so easy from the air. They can quickly tell which cars are speeding, use binoculars to read your plate, and radio ahead to a waiting officer, usually parked a few miles up the highway. I expect in the future that Police will use unmanned drones for this task. You can also get tagged by an umarked ghost car. Police around the country are starting to use confiscated vehicles for highway patrol, so you could be pulled over by a dark tinted Hummer or a Dodge Ram 4x4 that looks 'gangster'. They like to play games with you, by following you closely hoping that you will try to outrun them. If you see a vehicle following right behind you, look carefully in the mirror for hidden blue lights in the grill area. Normal unmarked cars are so obvious with those 'ram bumpers' that they might as well just mark them. A Valentine or other good brand of radar detector is a good tool to have, but it does not guarantee immunity or give you freedom to speed whenever and wherever. You still have to be aware of your surroundings. The best thing a radar detector does for you, is to remind you NOT to speed. At 18 years old, you do not need to start collecting speeding tickets and points on your license by thinking that a radar detector is a free pass to speed whenever you want to. Don't dissapoint your parents! |

Oh and don't forget - Ka can nab you even with the best detector - I got to play with a Ka gun in my neighborhood (a buddy was working for Kustom electronics at the time). That was like shooting fish in a barrel. ; -)

Yep, all you can hope is that you pick it up off the cars they are nabbing a half mile up the road. But if you are ahead of the pack, or if they are deliberately holding off zapping cars unless they look like they are going fast, you are in tough - Valnetine or not.

I agree w/Lester's big post. (Although when you say police are using confiscated cars in the country--do you mean Canada? Or the U.S.?)
Also check local laws -- I think there are some States where laser jammers are illegal. I think I recall seeing California on that list. And there are some States (Pennsylvania is one of them) where police don't use laser at all. |

Lasers are not used in California! I have been pulled over just once. Going 85 in a 65. Got a warning. Been driving for a damn long time for my age. I know when safety permits it to drive fast. Thanks for the input though!

In some parts of Canada and I have heard of this in the US as well. Here in Canada they are confiscating proceeds of crime - houses, cars bank accounts etc. Some of the cars are being converted into and used as ghost cars.

Stay at 10 over and you don't really need em. A radar/laser detector is only useful in certain situations. A laser jammer will be made illegal soon enough.

The use of LIDAR may be used in particular areas. That is, someone in one part of California may never see it while being prevelant in another part of the state.
Also, the use of radar detectors is not illegal in california, but it is illegal to have it mounted in a location that obstructs your view through the windshield, and that is up to the discretion of the officer. Also, just seeing one will might turn a potential warning into a ticket. Laser Jammers are illegal, as far as I know. http://www.radarbusters.com/legalissuesarticle.cfm As far as the use of them.... I've never been a fan. Many people have used them to great effect. Others have been caught regardless. The choice is up to you. Personally, I follow the following rule: Always be the second fastest driver on the road. I havent received a speeding ticket in California. Ever. Just this weekend I was doing 85 on the 680S while following another person who was just gaoing a tad bit faster. After about a mile a cop blew by me with lights on and nabbed the guy. I slowed down until I found another group of cars travelling fast. Luckily there are no shortage of fast drivers int he East Bay. |
