Snow Beater?

So, this past week I made a purchase of a new (used) car. But, deep down I always wanted something that I could take anywhere. I was wondering what do most eastern'ers use as their winter vehicle if not their 1?
I have had my eye for sometime on Honda Passports. I can pick up a low mile 2000 EX 4WD for around 5k out the door. Anyone want to share some input?

Try a search in this forum for some ideas that have been 'beat' about previously. We've covered this pretty well in the past.

My beater is a 2000 Civic EX. Sure, it's FWD, but some snow tires go a long way. Also, I've never had a single issue with the car.

I'm not familiar with the Passport, but Honda reliability is no joke.

Chris,

I picked up a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4wd selec-trac for $2k cash this past summer. It is UNSTOPPABLE in the snow.

The Passport was a re-badged Isuzu built in the Indiana Subaru plant.

Pretty much any subaru ever built will do the trick. My STi was ridiculous in the snow.

Just picked up a nice low mileage (80K) 91 LS400 as a winter 'beater". As for the Passport/Rodeo I would definitely avoid that vehicle, there was nothing genuinely Honda about it. Try looking at a 1st gen CRV instead.
