OMFG, lol, "we're gonna be in the Hudson." The pilot made it sound like he was negotiating with buddies on where they wanted go for dinner.

he's definitely a smooth operator...if that was me flying, i don't know how i would have handled that, or even if i would have thought to ditch the plane. i've dealt with bird strikes before, but never a critical failure like that. most of the time, birds hit others parts of the plane or just one single engine, but 2!

Dude, tell me you are joking and being sarcastic? Do you really want me to list all of the things that SHOULD have gone wrong? If one wing so much as dips the slightest and one of the engines catches the water, or the tip of the wing touches, etc. Any of a dozen other things including the water being choppy could have caused the plane to cartwheel or spin out of control and break up into a dozen pieces.

Cheers,
Mark

jets are NOT designed to safely land on water, they're designed to safely land on land...that's why they call it a LANDING. if they were designed to land on water, they would have skids. think about simple fluid dynamics...fill up a sink, grab a cup, and force it through the water...resistance. unless the ditch is executed perfectly, like this case, it will end catastrophically. the ditch that capt. sullenberger executed might as well have been the absolute, most perfect ditch ever executed...not just the skill it took, but the environmental variables as well.

See what happened to Ethiopian 767....terrorists got hijacked and assume it has enough fuel to their "destination"....then the plane tried to land offshore the Komoro islands in 1996.....only 50 out of 175 passengers and crews survived....

Damn, that's a calm and collected pilot. The ATCs weren't bad either feeding him what his alternatives were. Sounds like he just ran out of air but quickly recognized his only option.

Rule of thumb during emergency are always "aviate, navigate, communicate"
so he took control of the plane first, then find out where his only "options" are...then finally communicate to ATC....you can see his response to the controller is very short and concise....

Of course...cause MS flight simulator's water physics are the same as RL. Given the fact that it was programmed to be used for emergency water landings.

so real that if you put down your landing gear and try to land on water, it'll land

I took off and landed on an aircraft carrier with a 737 in X-Plane. So I am ready to do it in real life. Also in X-Plane my 737 has an anchor.

Not really. The hard part is getting the tanker going fast enough.

It's not that hard to ditch. So I agree with Limited.

Piece of cake. Just hold in ground effect to bleed off more speed and wait for it start to go down to enter the flare which helps to further bleed off the airspeed.
