Why the hell...

Do people buy new cars with the warranty being deciding factor over used or slightly used!?

Why the fuck would someone spend the money it costs for a brand new car out of fear something may go wrong or break?

You are only pre-purchasing the cost of repair by buying new and taking the depreciation hit!

and that is only IF something WHERE to go wrong, if something didn't within that 50-60,000 miles... you just pissed away $5-10,000!

"Buying used is buying someone elses problem"

"They got rid of it for a reason"

Bla bla bla...

2009 Honda S2000 $34,950.00 BRAND NEW

2007 Honda S2000 with 1,232 miles $25,670.00

That is a difference of $9,000 before any negotiation! Just because something MIGHT happen?!

IDIOTS!

When you buy a slightly used car the warranty is still in tact.

I think some people find satisfaction in new and fresh goods. They want to know everything that has happened to the car and will feel discomfort otherwise.

Yeah, you might lose out by paying for the car new, but it might be worth it if you have the warranty and something does go wrong. I guess it all comes down to whether you would want to take a risk or not.

For me, it would depend on the car. If we're talking S2000 I would never buy a 2009 model for that price, I know I could get it cheaper in great used condition.

My GF's car just died less than a month ago because of engine sludge. She bought the car used with 30,000 miles on it and had all the routine maintenance performed on it while she owned it. The shop said it doesn't matter how she took care of the car, if the original owner didn't maintain the car, especially in its early years, then the car could form the sludge.

I am very meticulous in how I care for my cars. I like the peace of mind knowing that I and only I have driven the car and taken the best care I could of it. There are too many people who just don't give a damn and beat the hell out of their cars. I don't want to get stuck with their leftovers. I am even more wary of a sporty car like a S2000 etc. because the sportiness factor increases the chance it was abused by the previous owner.

low miles doesn't always means a good car. It could all be street miles... or for a S2000, probably Track Miles. I've seen S2000s on autoX bouncing their rev limiter video game style, hope you aren't getting one of those. Some people buy new car just coz they don't want to deal with the crap the previous owner left. Unless you're some master mechanic and could tell whether that used car is good just buy visual inspection and/or a test drive.

The real suckers are those who bought a new car WITH EXTENDING WARRANTY! that's the real WTF.

I agree. It's psychological and people pay good money for emotional pleasure. Nothing wrong with it.

+1

My parents bought a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 35,000 miles and 1000 miles later, the transmission blew( and the very "helpful" dealership customer care was even better).

I am picky on how I take care of my car. I hand wash it and dry it when I can. I hate used things because I know people in general are idiots and don't do some basic maintenance to their things let alone vehicles.

I share the same sentiments. I was raised to buy right after the car suffers its first depreciation hit. I dont do that all the time though. I bought my 2004 S2000 from a man who was waiting on his Porsche 911 to arrive. He bought a new S2000 to fill the time. I've put 96,000 miles on the car. These were hard driven miles. I taught myself along with 3 other people how to drive stick on it. Anyone that pays 34k IMHO over paid. 2009 is the last year so I'll probably pick another one up down the road and slap a hardtop on it. I've driven a lot high powered cars but the s2k remains super fun.

I'm calling someone who wants to lose $9,000 so they have to spend money on repairs stupid... because it is.

You are paying out serious cash for something that has not happened and 8 times out of 10, won't. If you are careful of who you buy it from, and take even a small amount of time to cover your ass in the process there should be nothing to worry about.

Using cars such as Grand Cherokees as examples isn't the best for the defense of buying new considering a lot of vehicles are known to have problems used, or new and if you did not take the time to do some homework on the potential hazards of buying something like a Grand Cherokee (which is known since the first generation to have transmission problems) then that is YOUR fault, and buying NEW won't save you from the woes of a troubled manufacturer and or product.

In the defense of s2000 tracked miles... I would rather buy a tracked and maintained car from someone who knew what they were doing and a PPI that checked out, then buy a garage queen from some middle aged woman. It's all in who you buy it from and what steps you take to make sure you are covering your ass...

That doesn't mean taking a $5-10,000 depreciation hit to avoid a problem is a smart thing... you just PAID for the repairs you FELT you weren't paying for because you had a warranty, just in a different way. Yes that is... STUPID

It's not stupid.

People buy new cars for multiple reasons. First of all, the feeling of a new car is undeniably better. The smell, the fact that nobody else has driven it, seeing the odo at < 5mi, etc. It's your car, and you know all the history behind it.

If you read the original post, you will see that I clearly stated this is regarding those who buy a new car "with the warranty being deciding factor"

I can understand most of the rest, I too would spend extra coin for certain cars new because of those reasons but this doesn't have anything to do with those other reasons. Just the warranty/repair ordeal

Ok, I get it. You think that spending money because you're afraid of things breaking is stupid. But what about all the other reasons listed on this thread about why people like to buy new? Do you think that there's NO good reason to buy a new car or do you think that only the specific reason you listed it stupid?

The real question, though, is why do you care what people do with their money? If you've happened upon this nice little secret, why don't you just run with it and keep getting yourself deals of the century rather than belittling everyone else?

Look forward to your reply.
